Book excerpt: From Newbery Medalist Meg Medina, National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, comes a poignant salute to the caregivers who enter a child's tender world. Ana cannot contain her excitement--her abuela is coming to stay with her and Mami for always! Abuela is sure to let Ana play whenever she wants instead of rushing her off to school, like her neighbor and babysitter, señora Mimí, sometimes does. In fact, as Ana's classmate points out, she won't need señora Mimí to babysit at all anymore! But señora Mimí is a good listener, and they have a lot of fun together feeding the squirrels and eating snacks. Maybe Ana isn't ready to say goodbye to señora Mimí just yet? Masterful storyteller Meg Medina shares a reassuring tale that celebrates caregivers and community and their special role in children's lives, paired with warm, expressive illustrations by Brittany Cicchese.

Book excerpt: A cut & paste celebration of Black punk and outsider identity, this is the only complete collection of the fanzine Shotgun Seamstress, a legendary DIY project that centered the scope of Blackness outside of mainstream corporate consumerist identity In 2006, Osa Atoe was inspired to create an expression out of the experience of being the only Black kid at the punk show—and Shotgun Seamstress was born. Like a great mixtape where radical politics are never sidelined for an easier ride, Shotgun Seamstress was a fanzine by and for Black punks that expressed, represented, and documented the fullest range of being, and collectively and individually explored “all of our possibilities instead of allowing the dominant culture to tell us what it means to be Black.” Laid out by hand, and photocopied and distributed in small batches, each issue featured essays, interviews, historical portraits of important artists and scenes, reviews, and more, all paying tribute to musicians and artists that typify free Black expression and interrupt notions of Black culture as a monolith. Featuring figures such as Vaginal Cream Davis, the seminal Black punk band Death, Poly Styrene, Bay Area rocker Brontez Purnell, British post-punker Rachel Aggs, New York photographer Alvin Baltrop, Detroit garage rocker Mick Collins and so many others, in the pages of this book rock’n’roll is reclaimed as Black music and a wide spectrum of gender and sexuality is represented. Collecting and anthologizing the layouts as they were originally photocopied by hand, this collection comprises all eight issues created between 2006 and 2015.

He had to endure the horrors of life on Death Row, while the real killer got away with murder. It all started the summer of 1984, in Miami Dade County, in a business district, off 68th. Street in West Hialeah. The sound of gunfire disrupted the stillness of the night... When it was over, one man laid dead, another one, critically injured, and the third one, was arrested and charged with the crimes. It was the prelude of the ordeal to come for the accused young man. A web of lies, jealousy, hate and revenge was weaved around him, with the purpose of incriminate him and separate him from the woman he loved. He was tried, convicted and sentenced to die in Florida's electric chair, on the testimony of an unscrupulous eyewitness, who was lying, with the complicity of the prosecutor for personal gains... The other two witnesses to the crime couldn't testify on his behalf... The young man sat on Death Row many years, hoping and praying that the truth would prevail and he'd be exonerated. Throughout those desperate times, plagued by a horrendous nightmare, living waiting to die... he was sustained by the love of his family and friends. They stood by him, unconditionally, believing in his innocence among them the wife of the murdered man and a whistling ghost, who gave him hope in his worse moments of hopelessness. But most of all by the three courageous men, who never gave up on him: his lawyer, who kept halting the state from executing him... the detective, who kept looking for the killer in the shadows... and the priest, who kept praying for a miracle. Six year later, the young man became despondent. Every appeal was denied, the evidence that surfaced turned out to be a dead end and the only witness left was about to die... Under those circumstances, he decided to end it all there was nothing more they could do for him. He was ready to face his fate.... He was doing it for his family and friends he wanted to set them free from their suffering... Once he was gone, they could go on with their lives and he would only be a sad memory. A date was set for his execution... In the midst of all this, a woman from his past, came into the picture. She teamed up with the priest and his wife and together they were going to right the wrongs people do. Faith, courage and perseverance set the stage for a confrontation that had started three decades ago in another country... That event tore two families apart and changed their lives, drastically. Now, it was time for the final struggle: the war between the forces of good and evil... The outcome would determine if the young man lived or died... and it would reveal the truth behind a great deceit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Matria Redux: Caribbean Women Novelize the Past, author Tegan Zimmerman contends that there is a need for reading Caribbean women’s texts relationally. This comprehensive study argues that the writer’s turn to maternal histories constitutes the definitive feature of this transcultural and transnational genre. Through an array of Caribbean women’s historical novels published roughly between 1980 and 2010, this book formulates the theory of matria—an imagined maternal space and time—as a postcolonial-psychoanalytic feminist framework for reading fictions of maternal history written by and about Caribbean women. Tracing the development of the historical novel in four periods of the Caribbean past—slavery, colonialism, revolution, and decolonization—this study argues that a pan-Caribbean generation of women writers, of varying discursive racial(ized) realities, has depicted similar matria constructs and maternal motifs. A politicized concept, matria functions in the historical novel as a counternarrative to traditional historical and literary discourses. Through close readings of the mother/daughter plots in contemporary Caribbean women’s historical fiction, such as Andrea Levy’s The Long Song, Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones, Paule Marshall’s Praisesong for the Widow, and Marie-Elena John’s Unburnable, Matria Redux considers the concept of matria an important vehicle for postcolonial-psychoanalytic feminist literary resistance and political intervention. Matria as a psychoanalytic, postcolonial strategy therefore envisions, by returning to history, alternative feminist fictions, futures, and Caribbeans.
