Book excerpt: After overcoming a heroin addiction in her teenage years and striving to move forward, Amy Herrig faced an entirely different addiction twenty years later: money. She and her father, Jerry Shults, were thriving as the owners of the Gas Pipe stores in Dallas, Texas, as well as other successful businesses, when a government lawsuit threatened to take everything-their businesses, their money, and their freedom. Accused of crimes she hadn't committed, Amy spent the next four years fighting to stay out of prison, but that wasn't all she had to fight along the way. When one life-altering change after another shook up Amy's world, she gained a new perspective on herself and on what matters most in life. From an exhausting and demoralizing situation came a new outlook of gratitude, but also remorse and humility. Although Amy's actions in the past had not all been illegal, she had let the allure of money guide her decisions rather than using her moral compass; the shocking turn of events that resulted from those decisions led to profound changes and made a lasting impact on Amy's life.

Book excerpt: The poetry of Jody Cooke while greatly varied and at times seemingly unfocused in theme is a wonderful read and filled with rich emotional commentary. From man's base desires and carnal hunger to the more brutal aspects of rage, obsession, and the need for violence. Mr. Cooke takes a deep look into man's heart and pulls out the things we all try so desperately to hide. In other works he explores more romantic themes such as love, family, and the untamed wilds of our deepest imagination. Contained within this book are many such pieces. A body of work that is the result of a lifetime of creation. Here is a brief examination of a few of my favorites.

This book was released on 1997-08-26 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kuypers combines rhetorical theory and framing analysis in an examination of the interaction of the press and the president during international crisis situations in the post-Cold War world. Three crises are examined: Bosnia, Haiti, and the North Korean nuclear capability issue. Kuypers effectively demonstrates the changed nature of presidential crisis rhetoric since the end of the Cold War. Kuypers employs a new historical/critical approach to analyze both the press and the Clinton administration's handling of three international crisis situations. Using case studies of Bosnia, Haiti, and the alleged North Korean nuclear buildup in 1993, he examines contemporary presidential crisis communication and the agenda-setting and agenda-extension functions of the press. The importance of this study lies in its timeliness; President Clinton is the first atomic-age president not to have the Cold War meta-narrative to use in legitimating international crises. Prior studies in presidential crisis rhetoric found that the president received broad and consistent support during times of crisis. Kuypers found that the press often advanced an oppositional frame to that used by the Clinton administration. The press frames were found to limit the options of the President, even when the press supported a particular presidential strategy. This is a major study that will be of interest to scholars and researchers of the press, the modern presidency, and American foreign policy.

Whether doing a private job or a secret mission for the government, these contract agents don’t hesitate to put their lives on the line…especially when it comes to love. 72 Hours (Book 1): Grace Nolan walked away from the Devlin Group carrying Alex Rossi’s child in her womb and his bullet in her shoulder. But he has a secret of his own, and it may be the ultimate betrayal. On the Edge (Book 2): When Tony Casavetti is called to the Devlin Group headquarters, he finds out in a hurry his assumptions about executive administrator Charlotte Rhames were dead wrong. No Surrender (Book 3): Gallagher finally gets the up-close and personal time he’s been craving with fellow agent Carmen Olivera, and wonders if they can make a future together. But when a mission gets blown all to hell, they find the African jungle has its own, brutal way of deciding who has a future at all. No Place to Hide (Book 4): Jack Donovan went through hell and back to save Isabelle once. Now she’s back in his life, hunted by an assassin so elusive some claim he’s only an urban legend. As the Devlin Group races to uncover the killer’s identity and Jack and Isabelle go on the run in a desperate bid to keep her alive, she knows she can trust him with her life, but never again with her heart.

Book excerpt: Few topics in 20th century history generate as much interest as the Spanish Civil War. These letter from the Abraham Lincoln Brigade take us back to a time when 2800 Americans took up arms and confronted Hitler's Condor Legion, Mussolini's Black Shirts, and Franco's fascist calvary on the battlefields of Spain. Here are their combat experiences, the love letters they wrote under fire, friendships formed among themselves and with their Spanish comrades, and reports of Madrid and Barcelona undergoing history's first saturation bombing of civilian targets. It was the eve of World War II, and these men and women saw first-hand the danger facing the world. Iadrid 1937 captures for the first time the thoughts, words and dreams of those who fought. More than a collection of separate letters, Madrid 1937 gathers letters from many hands to tell a group story. Richly illustrated with over 50 color and black and white plates, this chronicle enables the reader to travel with the volunteers through France and Spain; visit the beseiged city of Madrid and walk the streets of Barcelona under fascist bombardment; experience the chaos of battle and the excitement of celebrations behind the lines; stand beside nurses and doctors as they struggle to save the lives of the wounded; and encounter famous writers such as Ernest Hemingway and Langston Hughes. Madrid 1937 tells a story of epic proportion, the struggle of a volunteer army who chose to risk their lives in the struggle against Fascism.
