Book excerpt: This collection brings together essays written over a thirty-five year period. They reflect James Gibbs's position vis-à-vis the Ghanaian theatre as sometimes a remote onlooker, sometimes an enthusiastic participant observer, deeply involved in issues of perception and influence in a society moving through colonialism to nationalism, independence and beyond. The main body of the book is divided into four sections. The first, “Outsiders and Activists,” looks at theatre for community development during the late 1940s, some connections between drama and film, and the astonishing involvement in Ghanaian performance culture of the Haitian poet and playwright Felix Morisseau–Leroy. The second section, “Intercultural Encounters,” examines ways in which classic Greek drama has been used by producers and writers in West Africa, with special reference to Victor Yankah, Kobina Sekyi (Ghana's first published playwright), and the Nigerian Femi Osofisan. Section Three, “Plays and Playwrights,” concentrates on Efua Sutherland, Ama Ata Aidoo, and Joe de Graft. This section uncovers issues of documentation and achievement that draw attention to the need for investment in organising resources for writing Ghana's theatre history. The volume draws to a close with personal accounts of touring student productions in the 1960s (with due attention to the influence of Bertolt Brecht) and of involvement in a British film production on location. The book closes with an updated complete bibliography of Ghana's chief dramatist, Efua Sutherland.

Book excerpt: The SFWA Grand Master’s award-winning collection “combines a richly textured multicultural background with incisive storytelling” (Library Journal). In Skin Folk, with works ranging from science fiction to Caribbean folklore, passionate love to chilling horror, Nalo Hopkinson is at her award-winning best, spinning tales like “Precious,” in which the narrator spews valuable coins and gems from her mouth whenever she attempts to talk or sing. In “A Habit of Waste,” a self-conscious woman undergoes elective surgery to alter her appearance; days later she’s shocked to see her former body climbing onto a public bus. In “The Glass Bottle Trick,” the young protagonist ignores her intuition regarding her new husband’s superstitions—to horrifying consequences. Hopkinson’s unique pacing and vibrant dialogue sets a steady beat for stories that illustrate why she received the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Entertaining, challenging, and alluring, Skin Folk is not to be missed. Praise for Nalo Hopkinson and the World Fantasy Award–winning Skin Folk “Hopkinson’s prose is vivid and immediate.” —The Washington Post Book World “An important new writer.” —The Dallas Morning News “Her descriptions of ordinary people finding themselves in extraordinary circumstances ring true, the result of her strong evocation of place and her ear for dialect.” —Publishers Weekly “A marvelous display of Nalo Hopkinson’s talents, skills and insights into the human conditions of life, especially of the fantastic realities of the Caribbean . . . Everything is possible in her imagination.” —Science Fiction Chronicle

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of an "African" cultural community across ethnic, national, and geographical boundaries has persisted in the imagination of writers, artists, and intellectuals. This idea has been reinforced by the migrations of writers of African descent throughout the world, criss-crossing frontiers of land and language. The very terms "African" and "Pan-African" remain sites of intellectual contention, generating a variety of political, literary, and cultural interpretations and ideological positions The essays in this volume demonstrate how concepts of Pan-Africanism, which, historically, were concerned with colonialism, racial identity, and African unity, extend the discussion of an "Africa" that exists beyond the continent and includes the Caribbean, the Americas, and Europe. Indeed the articles in this book update the definitions of Pan-Africanism by focusing especially on literary and cultural perspectives, with special reference to writers from Africa (North, South, East, West), the U.S. and the Caribbean, as well as arabophone, anglophone, francophone, lusophone, and creole linguistic communities. The volume is divided into five sections: "Migrating Words; " "Migrations, Journeys and Identifies; " "Migrations of Orality: Music, Poetry and Proverbs; " "Migrating Worlds: Redefining Africa's Borders; " and "Migrating Writers." Contributors include internationally recognized writers Nawal El Saadawi (Egypt), Ngugi wa Thiong'o (Kenya), Dany Bebel-Gisler (Guadeloupe), Shimmer Chinodya (Zimbabwe), and Amiri Baraka (U.S.), as well as an array of scholars from Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, who gathered at Stony Brook (State University of New York) for the annual A conference in 1996.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes on the challenge: What roles can and should African literature play in Africa's development? From a variety of critical stances and perspectives, the concepts of literature and of development are theorized, to include and extend beyond inherited concepts and boundaries in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, and thus, to engage peoples' everyday life experiences.Approaches to the question of Africa's literature and its development range from African feminism or feminist practices, to the economics and politics of public access to knowledge, information and literature, to communication networks and use of African languages in national education policies.Twenty essays constitute the volume's four parts which focus on: -- Diverse conceptualizations of African literature and development -- Critical studies of specific writers' works, linking their artistic development with issues and events of social or political development -- A philosophical consideration of the development's relationship to literature -- Models of activist pedagogy in African literatureThe structure of this volume is encompassed by two roundtable transcriptions with writers and critics for whom African literature and Africa's development is part of a larger struggle to create new space in which to thrive and envision new life, inside and outside the academy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in the best of times, the artist is constantly reaching beyond the present; the severity of Africa's present situation of crisis must urge our artists even farther into their version of a new life. In Beyond Survival, some of the best interpreters of African Literature focus on the role of the creative artist as a critical assessor, confidence builder and inspirer to excellence. The central theme of this important collection of essays in inspired by the belief that given the severity of the current crisis of life for African peoples, and given the intuitive and cultivated ability of the creative artist to monitor and accurately capture the complexities of any human institution, close attention to the world of African and African-heritage writers should provide not only important insights into various dimensions of the problem, but also and perhaps even more crucial, subtle but reliable pointers to probable solutions. More than any other group of people, it is perhaps to the artists we must turn for a creative but ultimately realizable vision of the future. The contributors fall under five broad headings, beginning with an introductory section featuring three important addresses delivered during the 1994 ALA annual conference in Accra, Ghana, at which these papers were first presented, as well a specially commissioned essay in memory of the late Flora Nwapa, one of Africa's best known pioneer women writers. The four other sections present a total of twenty essays focussing on: Shifting Paradigms; New Life: Language and Artistic Tradition; New Life: Language, Literature & National Policy; and Resistance Strategies.
