Book excerpt: Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) was used in an attempt to detect the effects of ionizing radiation on organic material. Previously reported resonances for urea were detected at 2,913.32 ± 0.01 kHz and 2,347.88 ± 0.08 kHz with associated T2* values 780 ± 20?s and 523 ± 24?s, respectively. The previously unreported? line for urea-d4 was detected at 2,381 ± 0.04 Khz and used to determine accurately for the first time the values for the nuclear quadrupole coupling constant? (3,548.74 ± 0.03 kHz) and the asymmetry parameter? (0.31571 ± 0.00007) for urea-d4. The inverse linewidth parameter T2* for?+ was measured at 928 ± 23?s and for?− at 721 ± 12?s. Townes and Dailey analysis was performed and urea-d4 exhibits a 0.004 increase in lone pair electronic density and a slight decrease in N-H bond electronic density, as compared to urea, probably due to the mass difference. A relationship is proposed, referred to as NQR linewidth analysis, between the dynamic spin relaxation times T2 and T2* and the widths of the distributions of the NQR parameters. Linewidth analysis is presented as a tool for possible use in future NQR work in all area, not just radiation effects. This relationship is tested using sodium nitrite T2 and T2* values for?− and?− as a function of temperature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date nitrogen NMR has been discussed in research papers and review articles throughout the scientific literature. It has been our aim in preparing this book to provide a comprehen sive account of the widely spread applications of nitrogen NMR. The relevant literature has been surveyed from the beginnings of NMR until early 1972. The steady annual growth in the number of references cited since 1965 is ample evidence of the ever increasing importance of the subject. Sufficient theoretical and experimental background is given for an understanding of the applications dealt with in later chapters. The basic principles of NMR are developed with a theoretical approach to chemical shifts and spin-spin coupling constants, particular emphasis being given to nitrogen nuclei. Following this the experimental aspects of nitrogen NMR are adequately described. Special emphasis is given to the observable effects of the nuclear quadrupole moment of the 14 N nucleus. It is appro priate that this topic be dealt with in depth since quadrupolar interactions frequently dominate the information available from a study of the 14 N nucleus and other nuclei spin coupled to it. The applications of nitrogen chemical shift data to organic and inorganic molecules are covered in two extensive chapters which include the effects of paramagnetism on nitrogen NMR.

Book excerpt: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) techniques have been very successful in obtaining molecular conformation and dynamics information. Unfortunately, standard NMR and NQR spectrometers are unable to adequately detect resonances below a few megahertz due to the frequency dependent sensitivity of their Faraday coil detectors. For this reason a new spectrometer with a dc SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) detector, which has no such frequency dependence, has been developed. Previously, this spectrometer was used to observe 11B and 27Al NQR resonances. The scope of this study was increased to include 23Na, 51V, and 55Mn NQR transitions. Also, a technique was presented to observe 14N NQR resonances through cross relaxation of the nitrogen polarization to adjacent proton spins. When the proton Zeeman splitting matches one nitrogen quadrupoler transition the remaining two 14N transitions can be detected by sweeping a saturating rf field through resonance. Additionally, simultaneous excitation of two nitrogen resonances provides signal enhancement which helps to connect transitions from the same site. In this way, nitrogen-14 resonances were observed in several amino acids and polypeptides. This spectrometer has also been useful in the direct detection of methyl quantum tunneling splittings at 4.2 K. Tunneling, frequencies of a homologous series of carboxylic acids were measured and for solids with equivalent crystal structures, an exponential correlation between the tunneling frequency and the enthalpy of fusion is observed. This correlation provides information about the contribution of intermolecular interactions to the energy barrier for methyl rotation.

Book excerpt: This book is about improving prohibited substances detection using the nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) technique at security checkpoints. The book proposes multiple signal processing and analysis techniques for improving detection of dangerous or contraband substances, such as explosives, narcotics, or toxic substances. Also, several hardware solutions are described and implemented in a custom-designed NQR spectrometer. A new approach to NQR signal detection is introduced using artificial intelligence/deep learning techniques. The book will be useful for for researchers and practitioners in the areas of electrical engineering, signal processing and analysis, applied spectroscopy, as well as for security or laboratory equipment manufacturers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.
