Book Synopsis Temperature Dependence of Nitrate Stress Corrosion Cracking of Mild Steel by :
Download or read book Temperature Dependence of Nitrate Stress Corrosion Cracking of Mild Steel written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The temperature dependence of nitrate stress corrosion in mild steel is given by activation energies of 27 kJ/mol for continuous and 56 kJ/mol for discontinuous crack growth. The mechanism of nitrate stress corrosion in mild steel has been interpreted as anodic dissolution, and these results support this interpretation, except that an intergranular oxide is formed and the metal is not dissolved directly. If the stress intensity, K, increases, then the mode of crack growth is fracture of the intergranular oxide or the oxide-metal interface. Nevertheless, anodic dissolution is an inherent part of the process, but by the solid state reaction in the grain boundaries. An initiation time is required even in precracked specimens, and this observation is attributed to the time required to form intergranular oxide. The suggested controlling mechanisms are dissolution of the intergranular oxide in specimens in which k decreases with crack length and grain-boundary diffusion of oxygen in specimens in which K increases.

Book Synopsis Factors Controlling Nitrate Cracking of Mild Steel by :

Book excerpt: Nitrite and hydroxide ions inhibit the growth of nitrate stress corrosion cracks in mild steel. Crack growth measurements showed that sufficient concentrations of nitrite and hydroxide ions can prevent crack growth; however, insufficient concentrations of these ions did not influence the Stage II growth rate or the threshold stress intensity, but extended the initiation time. Stage III growth was discontinuous. Oxide formed in the grain boundaries ahead of the crack tip and oxide dissolution (Stage II) and fracture (Stage III) are the proposed mechanisms of nitrate stress corrosion crack growth.

Book Synopsis Stress Corrosion Cracking by : V S Raja
Download or read book Stress Corrosion Cracking written by V S Raja and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which causes sudden failure of metals and other materials subjected to stress in corrosive environment(s), has a significant impact on a number of sectors including the oil and gas industries and nuclear power production. Stress corrosion cracking reviews the fundamentals of the phenomenon as well as examining stress corrosion behaviour in specific materials and particular industries. The book is divided into four parts. Part one covers the mechanisms of SCC and hydrogen embrittlement, while the focus of part two is on methods of testing for SCC in metals. Chapters in part three each review the phenomenon with reference to a specific material, with a variety of metals, alloys and composites discussed, including steels, titanium alloys and polymer composites. In part four, the effect of SCC in various industries is examined, with chapters covering subjects such as aerospace engineering, nuclear reactors, utilities and pipelines. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Stress corrosion cracking is an essential reference for engineers and designers working with metals, alloys and polymers, and will be an invaluable tool for any industries in which metallic components are exposed to tension, corrosive environments at ambient and high temperatures. Examines the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) presenting recognising testing methods and materials resistant to SCC Assesses the effect of SCC on particular metals featuring steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, magnesium alloys, copper-based alloys and welds in steels Reviews the monitoring and management of SCC and the affect of SCC in different industries such as petrochemical and aerospace

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Examines the factors that contribute to overall steel deformation problems. The 27 articles address the effect of materials and processing, the measurement and prediction of residual stress and distortion, and residual stress formation in the shaping of materials, during hardening processes, and during manufacturing processes. Some of the topics are the stability and relaxation behavior of macro and micro residual stresses, stress determination in coatings, the effects of process equipment design, the application of metallo- thermo-mechanic to quenching, inducing compressive stresses through controlled shot peening, and the origin and assessment of residual stresses during welding and brazing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this major reference work is to provide a first point of entry to the literature for the researchers in any field relating to structural integrity in the form of a definitive research/reference tool which links the various sub-disciplines that comprise the whole of structural integrity. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between mechanics and materials and structural integrity applications. Because of the interdisciplinary and applied nature of the work, it will be of interest to mechanical engineers and materials scientists from both academic and industrial backgrounds including bioengineering, interface engineering and nanotechnology. The scope of this work encompasses, but is not restricted to: fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep, materials, dynamics, environmental degradation, numerical methods, failure mechanisms and damage mechanics, interfacial fracture and nano-technology, structural analysis, surface behaviour and heart valves. The structures under consideration include: pressure vessels and piping, off-shore structures, gas installations and pipelines, chemical plants, aircraft, railways, bridges, plates and shells, electronic circuits, interfaces, nanotechnology, artificial organs, biomaterial prostheses, cast structures, mining... and more. Case studies will form an integral part of the work.
Book Synopsis Effect of Temperature on Stress Corrosion Cracking of 300M Steel by : JT. Ryder
Download or read book Effect of Temperature on Stress Corrosion Cracking of 300M Steel written by JT. Ryder and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of temperature on stress corrosion cracking of high-carbon 300M high-strength steel in deionized water was investigated. Tests were conducted with wedge-opening-load specimens at 0, 23, and 90°C. Stress corrosion crack growth rates above the stress corrosion cracking threshold KIscc were found to increase with increasing temperature and to be essentially constant at each temperature. The crack growth rates appeared to be described by an Arrhenius-type rate expression. The apparent stress corrosion cracking threshold KIscc at 23°C was approximately 12.1 MPa . m1⁄2 (11 ksi.in.1⁄2) and at 90°C, 16.5 MPa.m1⁄2 (15 ksi.in.1⁄2). At 0°C, KIscc appeared to be lower than at 23°C.
