Book excerpt: A thirteen-year-old girl in Depression-era Louisiana grapples with her mother moving to Chicago, her father remarrying, and finding where she belongs. Ever since Nissa Bergen’s father Ivar remarried, Nissa has felt like a stranger in her own home, clinging to her memories of her free-spirited mother, Heirah Rae, who moved to Chicago to escape the conformity of small-town Louisiana. To make matters worse, Nissa’s not ready for the physical changes that are happening to her. So when Heirah asks Nissa to stay with her for a while, Nissa decides it’s time for a change. But Heirah’s life in Chicago painting sets for a theater is overwhelming to Nissa, and she misses her home and father in Harper. Slowly, Nissa realizes that she has to stop living for her mother and start living for herself. Ivar and Lara’s visit convinces her that home is in Harper. And after a revelation in the Chicago library, Nissa discovers a way for her to stake her independence and find her place in her family and her life. Told with the lyricism that marked The Year of the Sawdust Man, Nissa’s Place is a beautiful continuation of Nissa’s story and a remarkable book on its own. Once you meet Nissa Bergen, you’ll never forget her. Praise for Nissa’s Place “Honeyed and colorful.” —Booklist “LaFaye surpasses the lyricism and emotional depth of her sparkling debut, The Year of the Sawdust Man, in this sequel. . . . Readers will be moved as Nissa comes to view Heirah Rae’s flight as an act of courage and a spur for Nissa to make her own dream of a library in Harper come true.” —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Book excerpt: “In my fourteenth year the influenza infected my whole world. . . . Seems as though just as the Great War came to a close, the folks of Downeast Maine set to fighting a war of their own.” Born into an artistic and eccentric family, Lyza laments that her only talent is carving letters into wood. At least, that is, until the devastating loss of her mother to influenza during the pandemic of 1918. The illness has settled on their small coastal town in Maine, and the funeral marches pass Lyza’s house almost daily. When her unconventional father begins to prepare for the return of his dead wife, Lyza is the only one to protect him from being committed to a nearby work farm. Awash with grief and longing for her mother, Lyza journeys into the thin territory that divides the living from the dead. Relying on her courage and an undiscovered talent, Lyza must save her father and find her own path. From the celebrated author of Worth, this is a powerful story of love that persists beyond the grave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vampire king’s army of vampire/werewolf hybrids is spreading across America, slaughtering everything in its path. Aided by Celise, a sprite driven mad by despair and armed with a book that grants unimaginable power, Cain’s hybrids can strike anywhere and at any time. But the hybrids aren’t the sprite’s most powerful weapon. That distinction belongs to an innocent pack member, drawn into a web of betrayal by Celise’s wicked lies. Already pressed on all sides, the wolves’ allied forces must race to uncover a deadly secret being kept by one of their own. If they fail, even their combined strength won’t be enough to stop the evil forces hellbent on nothing less but a complete annihilation of humankind. The hour of reckoning has arrived, and even the deepest love may not be enough to heal the wounds that come from within. The fate of the grey wolves hinges on their willingness to fight, forgive, and make unfathomable sacrifices.

Download or read book The Year of the Sawdust Man written by A. LaFaye and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2008 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven-year-old Nissa's life has never been perfect. Living in the small town of Harper, Louisiana, with a mama like hers, circa 1933, has led to lots of mean rumors. But now Mama is gone, and all the townsfolk talk about is who she might have run off with. Nissa's memories of the Sundays her mama would come home smelling of sawdust lead her to suspect the rumors could be true. Did her mama go away with the Sawdust Man? And if so, does it mean she's never coming back? A. LaFaye's powerful first novel beautifully explicates the world of a child in distress and how she copes with something beyond her understanding.

Book Synopsis Language Faculty Science by : Hajime Hoji
Download or read book Language Faculty Science written by Hajime Hoji and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how we can aspire to accumulate knowledge about the language faculty in line with Feynman's 'The test of all knowledge is experiment'. The two pillars of the proposed methodology for language faculty science are the internalist approach advocated by Chomsky and what Feynman calls the 'Guess-Compute-Compare' method. Taking the internalist approach, the book is concerned with the I-language of an individual speaker. Adopting the Guess-Compute-Compare method, it aims at deducing definite predictions and comparing them with experimental results. It offers a conceptual articulation of how we deduce definite predictions about the judgments of an individual speaker on the basis of universal and language-particular hypotheses and how we obtain experimental results precisely in accordance with such predictions. In pursuit of rigorous testability and reproducibility, the experimental demonstration in the book is supplemented by an accompanying website which provides the details of all the experiments discussed in the book.

Book Synopsis One Day I Will Write About This Place by : Binyavanga Wainaina
Download or read book One Day I Will Write About This Place written by Binyavanga Wainaina and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2011-07-19 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *A New York Times Notable Book* *A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice* *A Publishers Weekly Top Ten Book of the Year* Binyavanga Wainaina tumbled through his middle-class Kenyan childhood out of kilter with the world around him. This world came to him as a chaos of loud and colorful sounds: the hair dryers at his mother's beauty parlor, black mamba bicycle bells, mechanics in Nairobi, the music of Michael Jackson—all punctuated by the infectious laughter of his brother and sister, Jimmy and Ciru. He could fall in with their patterns, but it would take him a while to carve out his own. In this vivid and compelling debut memoir, Wainaina takes us through his school days, his mother's religious period, his failed attempt to study in South Africa as a computer programmer, a moving family reunion in Uganda, and his travels around Kenya. The landscape in front of him always claims his main attention, but he also evokes the shifting political scene that unsettles his views on family, tribe, and nationhood. Throughout, reading is his refuge and his solace. And when, in 2002, a writing prize comes through, the door is opened for him to pursue the career that perhaps had been beckoning all along. A series of fascinating international reporting assignments follow. Finally he circles back to a Kenya in the throes of postelection violence and finds he is not the only one questioning the old certainties. Resolutely avoiding stereotype and cliché, Wainaina paints every scene in One Day I Will Write About This Place with a highly distinctive and hugely memorable brush.
