Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive bibliography and exhibition chronology of the world's greatest museum of the decorative arts and design. The Victoria and Albert Museum, or South Kensington Museum as it used to be known, was founded by the British Government in 1852, out of the proceeds from the Great Exhibition of 1851. Like the Exhibition, it aimed to improve the expertise of designers, and the taste of the public, by exposing them to examples of good design from all countries and periods. 2,500 publications have to date been produced by, for, or in association with the V&A. The National Art Library, which is part of the Museum, has prepared this detailed catalogue, supplemented by a secondary list of 500 other books closely related to the V&A. The 1,500 exhibitions and displays recorded include those held in the main Museum and at its branches, the Bethnal Green Museum (now the National Museum of Childhood) and the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden, and additionally those it has organized at external venues, in Great Britain and abroad. The exhibitions and publications are fully cross-referenced, and there are name, title and subject indexes to the whole work, as well as an explanatory introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue presents a selection of 365 drawings from the vast collection of the Graphische Sammlung of the museum kunst palast. Among the most outstanding works of the period spanning the 15th to 20th century are the original drawings from the Italian Early Renaissance to High Baroque, including some by Raphael and Gianlorenzo Bernini. The focus of the 19th century collection is on the Nazarenes and members of the Düsseldorf Academy such as Wilhelm von Schadow, to which can be added some superb studies, sketches and watercolours by Caspar David Friedrich, Theodore Géricault and Gustav Klimt. Representing the 20th century are various drawings and prints by members of two important groups, the Brücke and Blauer Reiter, as well as the avant-garde Bauhaus artists. The post-Second World War period is represented by works on paper by Joseph Beuys, Arnulf Rainer and Rosemarie Trockel. English and German text.

Book Synopsis American Drawings and Watercolors in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by : Kevin J. Avery
Download or read book American Drawings and Watercolors in the Metropolitan Museum of Art written by Kevin J. Avery and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2002 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Metropolitan Museum began acquiring American drawings and watercolors in 1880, just ten years after its founding. Since then it has amassed more than 1,500 works executed by American artists during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in watercolor, pastel, chalk, ink, graphite, gouache, and charcoal. This volume documents the draftsmanship of more than 150 known artists before 1835 and that of about 60 unidentified artists of the period. It includes drawings and watercolors by such American masters as John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, John Vanderlyn, Thomas Cole, Asher Brown Durand, George Inness, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Because the 504 works illustrate such a wide range of media, techniques, and styles, this publication is a veritable history of American drawing from the eighteenth through most of the nineteenth century."--Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
Book Synopsis The Twentieth Century German Art Exhibition by : Lucy Wasensteiner
Download or read book The Twentieth Century German Art Exhibition written by Lucy Wasensteiner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first study dedicated to Twentieth Century German Art, the 1938 London exhibition that was the largest international response to the cultural policies of National Socialist Germany and the infamous Munich exhibition Degenerate Art. Provenance research into the catalogued exhibits has enabled a full reconstruction of the show for the first time: its contents and form, its contributors and their motivations, and its impact both in Britain and internationally. Presenting the research via six case-study exhibits, the book sheds new light on the exhibition and reveals it as one of the largest émigré projects of the period, which drew contributions from scores of German émigré collectors, dealers, art critics, and from the ‘degenerate’ artists themselves. The book explores the show’s potency as an anti-Nazi statement, which prompted a direct reaction from Hitler himself.
