The major themes of the struggles between individuals, parties and classes within the state, and between the states themselves are explored within the context of a study of the administration, organisation and growth of European society. The whole book has been fully revised and updated, particularly the section on German history. Professor Hearder has also given greater consideration to many important issues, such as, popular movements of protest and insurrection, life-styles, and the role of women.

This process of change is the primary focus of the book. Organised into a series of thematic chapters, Black and MacRaild's wide-ranging text offers the reader an analysis of numerous spheres of human history: politics, empire and warfare; economy, society and population; religion and culture. The book also offers considered treatment of Scotland, Wales and Ireland, with a truly British (as opposed to English) perspective maintained throughout. With numerous illustrations, helpful explanatory tables, boxes and textual inserts, as well as a list of further reading with each chapter, Ninteetenth Century Britain is an excellent introductory text book for students of this most vital period in British history.

Book excerpt: A core introductory textbook that provides students with an overview of the key issues in Europe's 'long nineteenth century', from the French Revolution in 1789 until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. Telling the story of how Europeans entered politics in the fiery trials of revolution and industrialization, the text opens with the French Revolution, passes through the crucible of the 1848 Revolutions and ends with the emergence of mass movements - socialist, revolutionary, nationalist and authoritarian - which anticipated those of the twentieth century. This is an ideal text for modules on Modern European History or Nineteenth-Century Europe which may be offered at all levels of an undergraduate History or European Studies degree. In addition it is a crucial resource for students who may be studying nineteenth-century Europe for the first time as part of a taught postgraduate degree in Modern History or European Studies.

Book excerpt: First published as part of the best-selling The Oxford Illustrated History of Britain, Christopher Harvie and Colin Matthew's Very Short Introduction to Nineteenth-Century Britain is a sharp but subtle account of remarkable economic and social change and an even more remarkable political stability. Britain in 1789 was overwhelmingly rural, agrarian, multilingual, and almost half Celtic. By 1914, when it faced its greatest test since the defeat of Napoleon, it was largely urban and English. Christopher Harvie and Colin Matthew show the forces behind Britain's rise to its imperial zenith, and the continuing tensions within the nations and classes of the 'union state'. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Originally published in 1922. PREFACE: THE object of this book is to enable the student or general reader to obtain, in the compass of one volume, a picture of change and development during the hundred and twenty years when things certainly, and probably men and women with them, were undergoing a more rapid change of character than in any previous epoch of our annals. I have tried to give the sense of continuous growth to show how economic led to social, and social to political change, how the political events reacted on the economic and social, and how new thoughts and new ideals accompanied or directed the whole complicated process. For such a purpose, it would be a mistake to confuse the narrative with too much detail, but I have put into the story the main events which directed the course of the current, or were regarded as specially symbolic of each passing age. I cannot hold the epicurean doctrine, sometimes favoured now adays, that because history increasingly deals with generalisation it is safe for the student to neglect dates, which are the bones of historical anatomy. Still less is it safe, in pursuit of generalised truth, to overlook the personality and influence of great men, who are often in large measure the cause of some c tendency which only they rendered inevitable. Political writers, social philosophers and founders of move ments must take their place beside warriors and statesmen in any account of social and political changes in modern times, But religion, literature and science are only mentioned here in connection with social or political developments of which they were in some degree the cause or the symbol. I have made no attempt to appreciate their real significance in a century of British history famous for all three of these supreme efforts of the human spirit. I have called the book British History, because, though it cannot claim to be a History of the Empire, it is more than a History of Britain. It is indeed, mainly, a history of Britain, but it treats of that island as the centre of a great association of peoples, enormously increasing in extent during the period under survey. The course of events in Canada, Australasia, Ireland, India and British Africa have been indicated in broken outline. In particular, I have tried to show the relation of the various phases of our home affairs to each of those separate stories of Imperial development, and the effect of politics and persons at home on our relations with Europe and with the United States Where should a British History of the Nineteenth Century begin, and where break off? Clearly it should stop where the nominal century and the reign of Queen Victoria come to an end together. The finish or the Boer War leaves us on the threshold of our own times, which are still too near us to be seen in perspective. Where to begin is perhaps less obvious. It would, I think, be absurd to begin exactly with the new century, with Adding ton and the Treaty of Amiens, at a moment s pause in DEGREES the battle with revolutionary France, and in the most terrible years of the initial agony of our own Industrial Revolution. It is necessary first to describe the starting-point of this great era of change, to give a sketch of the quiet, old DEGREES England of the eighteenth century before machines destroyed it, and the poli tical scene before the French Revolution came to disturb it. The fifty years that stretch from the loss of the American Colonies and the fall of George Ill s personal government down to Lord Grey s Reform Bill, compose a single epochs n our

For without such knowledge no one can understand, or begin to understand, the significance of the forces that have made it, the vastness of the issues involved, the nature of what is indisputably one of the gravest crises in the history of mankind. No citizen of a free country who takes his citizenship seriously, who considers himself responsible, to the full extent of his personal influence, for the character and conduct of his government, can, without the crudest self-stultification, admit that he knows nothing and cares nothing about the history of Europe._x000D_ Contents:_x000D_ The Old Regime in Europe_x000D_ The Old Regime in France_x000D_ Beginnings of the Revolution_x000D_ The Making of the Constitution_x000D_ The Legislative Assembly_x000D_ The Convention_x000D_ The Directory_x000D_ The Consulate_x000D_ The Early Years of the Empire_x000D_ The Empire at Its Height_x000D_ The Decline and Fall of Napoleon_x000D_ The Congresses_x000D_ France Under the Restoration_x000D_ Revolutions Beyond France_x000D_ The Reign of Louis Philippe_x000D_ Central Europe in Revolt_x000D_ The Second French Republic and the Founding of the Second Empire_x000D_ The Making of the Kingdom of Italy_x000D_ The Unification of Germany_x000D_ The Second Empire and the Franco-Prussian War_x000D_ The German Empire_x000D_ France Under the Third Republic_x000D_ The Kingdom of Italy Since 1870_x000D_ Austria-Hungary Since 1848_x000D_ England From 1815 to 1868_x000D_ England Since 1868_x000D_ The British Empire_x000D_ The Partition of Africa_x000D_ Spain and Portugal_x000D_ Holland and Belgium Since 1830_x000D_ Switzerland_x000D_ The Scandinavian States_x000D_ The Disruption of the Ottoman Empire and the Rise of the Balkan States_x000D_ Russia to the War With Japan_x000D_ The Far East_x000D_ Russia Since the 1905 War With Japan_x000D_ The Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913_x000D_ The European War_x000D_ Making the Peace

Book excerpt: The Industrial Revolution is a central concept in conventional understandings of the modern world, and as such is a core topic on many history courses. It is therefore difficult for students to see it as anything other than an objective description of a crucial turning-point, yet a generation of social and labour history has revealed the inadequacies of the Industrial Revolution as a way of conceptualizing economic change. This book provides students with access to recent upheavals in scholarly debate by bringing a selection of previously published articles, by leading scholars and teachers, together in one volume, accompanied by explanatory notes. The editor's introduction also provides a synthesis and overview of the topic. As the revision of historical thought is a continual process, this volume seeks to bring the reinterpretation of such debates as working-class formation up to the present by introducing post-structuralist and feminist perspectives.
