Book excerpt: Life is stressful. It's the most identified problem by adults. It is also one of the primary causes of symptoms that send us to the doctor. At the same time, most of us have great resistance to reducing our stress, or "managing" stress. Dr. Sideroff brings his over 40 years of work in the field of psychology as researcher, clinician, professor, trainer and consultant to this most important yet baffling issue of the 21st century. The Path: Mastering the Nine Pillars of Resilience and Success is based on his innovative new model of resilience that considers all factors that contribute to one's ability to navigate and master the challenges of today and live with the greatest level of health and success. His book however, goes beyond simply presenting important and useful information. He identifies and then addresses all the sources of resistance that interferes with addressing this problem. An example of this resistance is found in the concept of Primitive Gestalts that Dr. Sideroff identifies to explain how our brain develop based on childhood lessons and then freezes adaptation that interferes with new learning. Essentially, we adapt to our childhood environment and then get locked into these lessons. Dr. Sideroff is not simply interested in presenting important and useful information for the reader. He wants to make sure that the reader actually follows through and puts these lessons into practice. To do this he anticipates the defenses, blind spots and resistances of the reader and preemptively addresses them. One key factor that he deals with is the typical person's sense of overwhelm when facing the daunting list of behavioral, emotional and cognitive changes one feels they need to make to become resilient. Dr. Sideroff anticipates this and has created a device that he refers to as The Path. As a way of guiding the reader step by step on a journey of growth and increasing mastery he distills the process down to asking one question at any time: "Am I on The Path, or off The Path." As he explains, by working on the nine pillars of resilience, the reader begins to learn how to be on The Path. To avoid overwhelm, one only has to ask that one question, and if they determine that they are off The Path, the book guides them gently back onto The Path. Based on Dr. Sideroff's own brain research and clinical experience, the nine pillars cover such areas as relationship with self, relationship with others, relationship with something greater (spirituality, purpose and service), physical balance and mastery, mental balance and mastery, emotional balance and mastery, presence, flexibility and last, power (defined as the ability to get things done). This comprehensive model and program leaves no one behind in its goal of helping each reader develop greater resilience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a school great? Studies into good schools are numerous, but there has been much less written about great schools. The former are more common, but with success comes complacency; good is the enemy of great. In 2009 the London Leadership Strategy established the Going for Great programme, creating a forum for leaders of schools rated `outstanding' by Ofsted. This collaboration sought to identify and share best practice; based on their case studies, school-to-school visits, the research literature and through seminar, debates and discussions, a model of great schooling has emerged. This publication seeks to explore in depth the Nine Pillars of Greatness written by the course leaders of the Going for Great programme. It considers the range of characteristics that define great schooling, from a school's values and ethos, leadership and teaching to its curriculum, approach to professional development, learning community and ongoing self-evaluation.Supported by a wealth of academic pedagogical texts and written by three authors who have spent their lives in education, The Nine Pillars of Great Schools examines the commonalities between the most successful institutions and demonstrates how to transform a good school into a great school.

The Nine Pillars of History are defined from nine basic requirements for a healthy and prosperous society during the following 190,000 years of Hunting and Gathering. Sexuality, a fundamental human need that goes even further back in history than society, had to be mitigated with a social rule: The Golden Rule. The Nine Pillars of History are used as non-political common denominators to judge the political evolution of some thirty major countries or cultures. In addition, the Pillars are partnered with the Golden Rule to explore five world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The relevance of The Nine Pillars of History is proven by the fact that they exist intergraded across multiple societies since the dawn of time and are still relevant for our modern world. This historical review reveals that dogmatic religions and harsh politics have caused 10,000 years of war by challenging the relevance of The Nine Pillars of History. Dr. Sevelius gives his views as nonpolitical, nonreligious thoughts. Each paragraph has been numbered to offer an easy to use reference system for community discussion of specific statements. The Nine Pillars of History gives you, Dear Friend and Reader, a vision for peace. As Dr. Sevelius respectfully borrows President Lincolns enduring truth, that governments of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory is an essential element in the development of any academic discipline and sport management is no exception. This is the first book to trace the intellectual contours of theory in sport management, and to explain, critique and celebrate the importance of sport management theory in academic research, teaching and learning, and in the development of professional practice. Written by a world-class team of international sport management scholars, each of whom has taken a leading role in developing a particular theory or framework for understanding sport management, the book covers the full span of contemporary issues, debates, themes and functional approaches, from corporate social responsibility and diversity to strategy, marketing and finance. Every chapter explores a key theoretical approach, including an overview of that theory, a discussion of the process of theory development and of how the theory has been employed in research, practice or teaching, and outlines directions for future research in that area. Each chapter includes cases and examples, as well as short illustrative commentaries from people who have used that particular theory in their work, and attempts to highlight the theory-practice links, or gaps, in that area. For a fully-rounded understanding of what sport management is and how it should be studied, taught and practiced, a thorough grounding in theory is essential. The Routledge Handbook of Theory in Sport Management is therefore important reading for all advanced students, researchers, instructors, managers and practitioners working in this exciting field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Olympic Games is undoubtedly the greatest sporting event in the world, with over 200 countries competing for success. This important new study of the Olympics investigates why some countries are more successful than others. Which factors determine their failure or success? What is the relationship between these factors? And how can these factors be manipulated to influence a country’s performance in sport? This book addresses these questions and discusses the theoretical concepts that explain why national sporting success has become a policy priority around the globe. Danyel Reiche reassesses our understanding of success in sport and challenges the conventional explanations that population size and economic strength are the main determinants for a country’s Olympic achievements. He presents a theory of countries’ success and failure, based on detailed investigations of the relationships between a wide variety of factors that influence a country’s position in the Olympic medals table, including geography, ideology, policies such as focusing on medal promising sports, home advantage and the promotion of women. This book fills a long-standing gap in literature on the Olympics and will provide valuable insights for all students, scholars, policy makers and journalists interested in the Olympic Games and the wider relationship between sport, politics, and nationalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years or so there has been a sharp increase in interest from national sports federations and governments in the development of effective elite sport systems, particularly focused on achieving success in the summer and winter Olympic Games. Many countries now have publicly funded elite sports strategies which provide specialist facilities and support staff and often provide direct financial support for athletes. These developments have stimulated academic interest in describing the elite sport systems, analysing the processes by which policy is established and evaluating the impact of these policies on elite athlete success. Far less attention has been placed on the operation of the elite sports systems and on how the system interfaces with the athlete. The aim of this book is to refocus attention on the management and operation of systems designed to deliver elite success. The book draws on the theoretical literature in implementation, organisation theory, leadership and complexity. This provides an initial context for analysis and a stimulus for theory development around key questions such as: How do coaches manage their relationship with athletes? How does talent identification operate in practice? Do coaches fulfil the role of gatekeeper between the athlete and other elements of the sports system e.g. sports science support? How do managers, support staff and athletes interpret the expectations placed on them? The first part of the book focuses on aspects of the effectiveness of elite sports systems and the second explores aspects of systems operation focused on the interface between the athlete and the sport development system, and cross-cutting themes within the book include the management of talent identification and coach development. This is illuminating reading for any student, researcher or practitioner working in sport development, sport management or sports coaching.
