Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary survival story of two families’ journey to freedom during World War II. When you hear about how Stalin tormented hundreds of thousands of people and the devastating stories throughout his overwhelming existence, you wonder how any child could endure his torture and survive through the pain and agony of his wrath. But both Rysia Szuber and Kaz Kiellerman did. Nine Lives of Kaz is based on the amazing journey of Kaz, who was only eleven years old when he and his family were forcibly taken from their home on February 10, 1940, and loaded onto freight trains, along with thousands of other Polish people, to travel to Gulag camps in frigid Siberia. Victoria also recounts Rysia’s journey, as she and her family were also among those thousands forced to leave Poland and work in labour camps. After the British signed an amnesty agreement with Stalin in August 1941, the displaced Polish people were free to leave the camps. However, unable to go home due to the ongoing war and impoverished, they were subject to years of extreme hardship, as the British regime moved the displaced people from one country to the next, often setting up barracks and camps in desolate places. Many times, Kaz’s family had barely any food or warmth to keep them alive. With cunning and stealth, Kaz often had to break the law to help feed his family. And many times, his courageous adventures brought him close to death. Based on true events, from December 1939 to 1946, Nine Lives of Kaz is a remarkable tale of a young person’s resilience, resourcefulness, and hope.

Book excerpt: Billy Boyle is sent to the heart of the USSR to solve a double-murder at a critical turning point in the war in this latest installment of critically acclaimed James R. Benn's WWII mystery series. It’s September 1944, and the US is poised to launch Operation Frantic, a shuttle-bombing mission to be conducted by American aircraft based in Great Britain, southern Italy, and three Soviet airfields in the Ukraine. Tensions are already high between the American and Russian allies when two intelligence agents—one Soviet, one American—are found dead at Poltava, one of the Ukrainian bases. Billy is brought in to investigate, and this time he's paired, at the insistence of the Soviets, with a KGB agent who has his own political and personal agenda. In the course of an investigation that quickly spirals out of control, Billy is aided by the Night Witches, a daring regiment of young Soviet women flying at night at very low altitudes, bombing hundreds of German installations. It’s a turning point in the war, and allied efforts hang by a thread. Unless Billy and his KGB partner can solve the murders in an atmosphere of mutual distrust, Operation Frantic is doomed.

This second work covers those born after 1940 who have continued the tradition. This work has five sections, each with its own introduction. The first, Modern Acoustic Blues, covers artists that are major players on the acoustic blues scene of recent time, such as John Hammond, Jr. The second, Contemporary Chicago Blues, features artists of amplified, citified, gritty blues (Paul Butterfield and Melvin Taylor, among others). Section three, Modern American Electric Blues, includes some Texas blues singers such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmie Vaughan and examines how the blues have spread throughout the United States. Contemporary Blues Women are in section four. Section five, Blues Around the World, covers artists from four different continents and twelve different countries. Each entry provides biographical and critical information on the artist, and a complete discography. A bibliography and supplemental discographies are also provided.
