Book Synopsis Nine Letters on Landscape Painting by : Carl Gustav Carus
Download or read book Nine Letters on Landscape Painting written by Carl Gustav Carus and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and science. Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first edition appears here in English for the first time.

Book Synopsis The Simple Complexity of Number Nine by : Said Hany
Download or read book The Simple Complexity of Number Nine written by Said Hany and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since man was created, he realised that his fingers were his best tools. He built his counting system on those fingers with which he learned to develop writing, writing the numbers and the alphabet. Our concept of numbers is born with us before that of speech and writing. The brain is conscious of numbers from the very early stages of development. This concept progresses with education, practice, and applications, i.e., through life experiences. Our life journeys, from beginning to end, go through a path totally surrounded by numbers. We adapt ourselves through this journey to make some sense of it. Hence, numbers are a major and essential part of our existence. This book highlights the history and development of numbers and delves into the mystery of number 9 in a wide variety of mathematical excursions. The famous Fibonacci numbers, as well as other numbers and sequences, fall under the mystique of number 9.

Book Synopsis Contesting Conversion by : Matthew Thiessen
Download or read book Contesting Conversion written by Matthew Thiessen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise Matthew Thiessen offers a nuanced and wide-ranging study of the nature of Jewish thought on Jewishness, circumcision, and conversion. Examining texts from the Hebrew Bible, Second Temple Judaism, and early Christianity, he gives a compelling account of the various forms of Judaism from which the early Christian movement arose. Beginning with analysis of the Hebrew Bible, Thiessen argues that there is no evidence that circumcision was considered to be a rite of conversion to Israelite religion. In fact, circumcision, particularly the infant circumcision practiced within Israelite and early Jewish society, excluded from the covenant those not properly descended from Abraham. In the Second Temple period, many Jews began to subscribe to a definition of Jewishness that enabled Gentiles to become Jews. Other Jews, such as the author of Jubilees, found this definition problematic, reasserting a strictly genealogical conception of Jewish identity. As a result, some Gentiles who underwent conversion to Judaism in this period faced criticism because of their suspect genealogy. Thiessen's examination of the way in which Jews in the Second Temple period perceived circumcision and conversion allows a deeper understanding of early Christianity. Contesting Conversion shows that careful attention to a definition of Jewishness that was based on genealogical descent has crucial implications for understanding the variegated nature of early Christian mission to the Gentiles in the first century C.E.

Download or read book Human Information Processing written by Peter H. Lindsay and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Information Processing: An Introduction to Psychology, Second Edition, was written to reflect recent developments, as well as anticipate new directions, in this flourishing field. The ideas of human information processing are relevant to all human activities, most especially those of human interactions. The book discusses all the traditional areas and then goes beyond: consciousness, states of awareness, multiple levels of processing (and of awareness), interpersonal communication, emotion, and stress. The book begins with an introduction to some of the more interesting phenomena of perception and poses some of the puzzles faced by those who would attempt to unravel the structures. Separate chapters cover the systems of most interest for human communication: the visual system and the auditory system; the structure of the nervous system; and the systems of memory: sensory information storage, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Subsequent chapters deal with the different aspects of memory, including show how memory is used in thought, in language, and in decision making. Also examined are the neurological basis of memory and the representation of knowledge within memory.
