This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine Girls, No Boys is a collection of true stories of a family in rural Virginia—Daddy, Mama and nine children. All girls. No boys. For young Black parents trying to rear a large family in the 40s, 50s and 60s, there were tough times with years of struggle. Stories are funny, sad, depressing as well as triumphant. Being sharecroppers, the family deals with sub-standard farmhouses and landowners who are difficult. Moves from one farm to another take place as the family continues to grow. Daddy and Mama yearn for a home of their own. When Daddy gets his first tractor he has farmed so long with mules he uses the same commands to try to stop the tractor. He has to learn that saying “whoa” doesn’t work with the tractor. The brake has to be applied instead. Choosing appropriate names for the girls becomes an ordeal. With the assistance of relatives and older ladies in the community, some of the names chosen cause much ridicule and anguish for the girls. Having one car to transport a family of eleven provides interesting episodes. A door that swings open when Daddy makes turns while driving the car endangers the family. Holes in the floorboard of the car are hazardous as well as convenient at times. The family has its share of emergencies. Daddy’s controlled burning gets out of control, and endangers the farm and the entire community. One child swallows an object and has to seek medical attention. Another is burned badly as her clothes catch fire while she tries to stay warm in the poorly heated farmhouse. Segregated two-room schools with long distances to walk impact the girls’ educational opportunities and school attendance. Having to help Daddy with farm chores also makes attending school difficult. Teenage years and dating provide interesting reading. Mama and Daddy try to ensure that their girls grow up to be respectful young ladies by trying to enforce unorthodox rules. Perseverance, determination and hard work are evident as the family’s journey unfolds and the fate of Daddy, Mama and the nine girls is revealed.

Book excerpt: Inspired by the life of pioneering female baseball player Alta Weiss, and dramatized by Terry Widener’s bold illustrations, Girl Wonder tells the unforgettable story of a true American original. Alta Weiss was born to play baseball, simple as that. From the age of two, when she hurls a corncob at a pesky tomcat, folks in her small Ohio town know one thing for sure: She may be a girl, but she’s got some arm. When she’s seventeen, Alta hears about a semipro team, the Independents. Here’s her big chance! But one look at Alta’s long skirts tells Coach all he needs to know—girls can’t play baseball! But faster than you can say “strike out,” Alta proves him wrong: Girls can play baseball!

Download or read book The Circle of Nine written by Cherry Gilchrist and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As women seek to cultivate an understanding of their lives, a mythological model can provide a tool for self-discovery and realizing individual potential. The Circle of Nine presents nine archetypes that represent different, but equally important aspects of the feminine psyche. They portray both the life of the individual and the story of woman as a whole—a circle of ever-changing patterns that is a source of wisdom and inspiration.Three mothers, three queens, and three ladies form the circle. The Great Mother nurtures her children with a love that embraces the cycle of life, the Queen of the Night transforms the raw energy of instinct into skill and vision, and the Lady of the Hearth brings warmth and creativity into the home. By recognizing these and the other six archetypes of the circle, women can hold up a mirror to their souls to gain new perspectives and unlock their potential.Drawing from history, her work with women's groups, and contemporary observations, Cherry Gilchrist presents a mythology that explores the psychology of the modern woman. Her analysis, interpretations, and practical advice help to unravel the mystery of the divine feminine and provide a useful guide for daily life.
