Book excerpt: Fighting at night has become increasingly important to combat success as new and better generations of night equipment allow soldiers to see and operate more effectively at night. The goal of the NIGHTFIGHTER program being executed by the Infantry Forces Research Unit (IFRU) of the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences is to improve soldier, leader, and unit training for night operations. Research under NIGHTFIGHIER encompasses a broad spectrum of skills and issues, ranging from basic skills which do not require special equipment to the specialized skills demanded by the most sophisticated night technologies. and from training issues which have persisted over time to those emerging as night operations become more common. The research reponed here is on an instructional program which emphasizes basic unaided night vision knowledge and skills. Through the use of35-mm slides with neutral density filters, students experience what happens to their vision at night and learn techniques to overcome visual problems encountered at night. The program was developed under separate Memoranda of Agreement with the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory and the Naval Aerospace and Operational Medical Institute. The report presents a series of experiments conducted by the IFRU which showed the program increased the proficiency of experienced soldiers, as well as Infantry trainees, and can be presented effectively by military instructors. Research findings on the unaided night vision program have been presented to the command group at the U.S. Army Infantry Center and to all Army agencies which supponed the research. The program has been demonstrated to the observer/controllers and the opposing force at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), to the command group of the 82d Airborne Division, to the Ranger Training Brigade, and to numerous visilors 10 the U.s . Army Infantry School dismounted Battlespace Battle Lab's Night Fighting Training Facility. It is being used by Ihe opposing force at the JRTC, the 82d Airborne Division, and the Ranger Training Brigade. The program will be pan of the Battle Lab's Night Fighting Training Facility and in the exportable training package to be distributed by the Battle Lab

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The report documents an instructional program on unaided night vision skills and knowledge critical to all ground force night operations. The program was developed jointly by the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI), the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory, and the Naval Aerospace and Operational Medical Institute. A series of experiments conducted by ARI showed the program to be effective with both experienced soldiers and Infantry trainees. The program is presented in the dark using neutral density filters on 35-mm slides to allow individuals to dark adapt over a 30- to 45- minute instructional period. Demonstrations show what happens to vision at night as well as techniques to reduce visual illusions and other problems encountered at night. The report contains the instructional guide for the program, a separate summary of the program content, and a job aid to remind soldiers of critical night vision concepts and guidelines regarding use of their eyes during night exercises." -- Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph discusses the role that night vision technology plays in the planning and execution of the night attack by light infantry units at battalion level and below. The tactical framework for the night attack and the night vision equipment that support it are examined from the perspective of the individual soldier, small units, and the enemy. The purpose is to determine the role that night vision equipment plays in the night attack. Three models are used to describe and analyze the relationships between the soldier, the small units, and the night vision devices that they employ. These models highlight the specific capabilities and limitations that are experienced by fight infantry forces as they attack at night. Two historical examples are used to illustrate the application of night vision technology in the night attack--the attack by 42 Commando at Mount Harriet, Falkland Islands, 1982, and an attack by a fight infantry battalion conducted at the National Training Center in 1992. Both examples highlight the unique aspects of the night attack in the era of night vision technology. As a result of the consideration of the tactics, technology, and the historical examples a conclusion is reached. It is, that although the tactical system is sound, the over emphasis and over reliance on night vision technology without a firm understanding of its specific capabilities and limitations constitutes the unconsidered application of a technological innovation. Recommendations are made to correct this trend.

Book excerpt: Soviet ground force tactical units conduct night attacks in accordance with a theoretical model which has changed little over the past decade. Its salient characteristics are prebattle reconnaissance, attack from the march, dismounted assault, illumination, patrolling, commitment of a second echelon, and penetration of the defending brigade reserve positions by dawn. Demonstrated Soviet tactical unit deficiencies in executing the night attack include land navigation and terrain orientation, driving, and use of night vision devices. Theoretical vulnerabilities which may be exploited include over reliance on illumination, predictibility of employment of combat reconnaissance patrols, and physical exhaustion of Soviet troops. Keywords: Night combat; Night attack; Soviet night tactics. (JHD).

Book excerpt: This Small Unit Night Fighter Handbook combines existing doctrine with night-fighting tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) currently used by light infantry squads and platoons. The dismounted battle drills found in ARTEP 7-8, MTP DRILL, form the basis for these TTP. The drills in Chapter 2 incorporate existing technology with current doctrine to overcome limiting factors experienced by soldiers and leaders at night. The result is a modified mission training plan for squad and platoon battle drills that enhance the unit's ability to fight at night as well as deny the enemy his night capabilities or advantages. These drills form the basis for a unit training plan. The techniques that are incorporated into the drills must be modified as the situation dictates, and may vary with individual unit SOPs. The leader's METT-T analysis (referred to throughout this document as MTETT (mission, terrain, enemy, troops and time available)) must also take into consideration the enemy's night vision capabilities, and the availability of equipment referenced in these drills.
