Download or read book The Nigerian Capital Market and Economic Development in Nigeria written by Nayuni Charles Sabe and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work sets out to examine the relationship between the Nigerian Capital Market and economic development of Nigeria from 1987 to 2006. Thus, the performance of the Nigerian Capital Market indicators as they affect the GDP growth rate and human development index in Nigeria was examined. Multiple linear regression model was adopted as the method of analysis. The evaluation technique includes t-statistics, R squared, adjusted R squared, Durbin Watson test, standard error test and the f-statistics. The specific findings of this study show that there is no significant relationship between the capital market indicators and economic development in Nigeria during the period 1987 to 2006. There is a positive but insignificant relationship among the Nigerian Stock Exchange market capitalization, turnover ratio and economic development, while the relationship between the Nigerian Stock Exchange number of listed securities and economic development is negative and insignificant. Therefore, the Nigerian capital Market has fallen short of expectation vis-a-vis its role in fostering investment for economic growth and development."
Book Synopsis Financialisation, Capital Accumulation and Economic Development in Nigeria by : Ejike Udeogu

This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inadequacies of many past studies that have tried to highlight the causes of the persistent underdevelopment in developing countries—such as Nigeria—have been noted to derive mainly from the focus and, in some cases, the methodologies adopted by the researchers. It has been suggested that, although many researchers recognize the inability to reproduce sufficient profit as undermining the capitalist accumulation process (and as a result the development of an economy), they have nevertheless often tended to ignore the importance of the political-economic arrangement and historical factors in the formation of expectations about the rate of profit. Indeed, in some cases, they have failed to provide a substantive account of these critical variables. This book highlights how the inherent contradictions of the contemporary political-economic arrangement and some historical factors undermined the peculiar capital accumulation processes in Nigeria, which, in turn, has slowed economic development in the country. This book contributes to the field of Nigeria studies by filling gaps that exist in both theoretical and empirical literature on growth and development in the country, deviating from the orthodox approach of analysing the nation’s problems purely based on the factors internal to the country and by imposing ready-made theoretical logics on history. Rather, it studies Nigeria’s problems in juxtaposition with the world system and imposes historical evidence on theoretical logics. This book represents a good resource for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses on area studies. Researchers and policy-makers will also find it useful as a reference.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several concerted efforts have been made towards understanding the relationship between capital market and the economic growth in Nigeria. The capital market of every economy is setup for the attainment of specific objectives, some of which includes facilitating economic growth and stability, sourcing of the much needed capita for economic development, amongst others. This paper was carried out with the intention to investigate the controversial issue of the continuous lingering ineffectiveness, inefficiency and under performance of the Nigerian capital market in providing the much expected support for the growth and development of the Nigerian economy particularly as it concerns the real sectors. Data was collected and analyzed using Chi Square analysis, tables from secondary data sources and graphical illustrations were employed in the analysis. The result of the study shows that the Nigerian capital market has not been efficient enough to impact on the country's economic growth. The limited contribution of the market to the development of the industrial sector, as a result of the absence of stimulating encouragement and liberality of the cost mechanism required for listing on both the primary and secondary markets, were highly inhibitive, ineffective and restrictive to firms that would have come to be listed on the capital market, especially small and medium scale enterprises. On the strength of these evidences, this paper recommends that government should introduce more tax incentives to motivate and encourage investors in organizations listed on the stock exchange, and indeed more capital and tax relieves for new startups and newly enlisted small and medium scale industries. Finally, listing on the exchange should be made more easier and cheaper for companies that want to be listed to attain a given level of capitalization on the secondary market particularly targeted at micro, small and medium scale industrial enterprises.

Download or read book Frontier Capital Markets and Investment Banking written by Temitope W. Oshikoya and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the role of capital markets and investment banking in Nigeria, the largest frontier market economy in the world by both population size and gross domestic product. Offering a systematic framework combining conceptual principles with real practice, the book enables the reader to gain useful insight into how capital markets and investment banking work in the real world of a frontier market. The book provides a synopsis of the economic attractiveness, financial systems intermediation and capital markets, as well as the regulatory framework within a frontier market. It explores capital raising through equity and underwriting and private equity, paying particular attention to putting capital to work on mergers and acquisitions, project and infrastructure finance and real estate finance. Furthermore, it analyses asset management, pension industry and securities trading in a frontier market. The authors use detailed case studies from Nigeria to illustrate the operations of investment banking in frontier markets. The cases, tables and charts serve as useful illustrations of the topics under discussion. With the authors’ combined experience of more than 50 years as economists, finance and investment professionals and in executive leadership positions in the financial services industry, this book will interest the academic community, professionals in the financial industry, retail and institutional investors interested in frontier markets, development practitioners in international organizations and policy makers including securities and capital market regulators.

Book Synopsis Does the Capital Market Spur Economic Growth? Evidence from Nigeria by : Taiwo Muritala
Download or read book Does the Capital Market Spur Economic Growth? Evidence from Nigeria written by Taiwo Muritala and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study critically examines the relationship between the capital market and economic growth of Nigeria. Data are mainly obtained from secondary sources, the CBN statistical bulletin over the period of 1980-2015. The results from the augmented Dickey Fuller unit root test show that all the variables were stationary at the level except RGDP, MCAP and TNI, which were stationary at the first difference. The results from Ordinary Least Square (OLS) reveal that total new issue, market capitalization, and total listing positively impact the economy while the value of the transaction has a negative impact on real gross domestic product. The study recommends, among others, that the government implement measures to build up investors' confidence in the capital market by fair transactions, by increasing investment instruments on the market; all the tiers of government should encourage funding their realistic development program through the capital market.
