Book excerpt: On March 13, 2020 when the global coronavirus pandemic brought life as we know it to an abrupt halt, the International Center of Photography, just weeks after opening in a brand-new building on Manhattan'ss Lower East Side that was buzzing with visitors, was forced to close its doors. Wanting to do more than virtual exhibition tours, ICP announced the #ICPConcerned open call on March 20th, an invitation for people to make, upload, and tag images on Instagram of whatever was going on in their lives wherever they were. What resulted was more than sixty thousand submissions from countries as far flung as France, Singapore, Argentina, Nigeria, Canada, and Iran. From the halls of medical facilities to eerily empty streets and domestic settings converted into home offices and classrooms, the more than 800 photographs collected here are organized chronologically and accompanied by headlines gathered from various global news entities. Taken together, these words and pictures represent the pain, heartbreak, hope, and occasional humor we've all experienced this past year against the backdrop of COVID-19, unrelenting racial injustice, and a divisive political climate. Exhibition: ICP International Center for Photography, New York, USA (01.10.2020 - 03.01.2021).

Download or read book The Hidden Crisis written by and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When wars break out, international attention and media reporting invariably focus on the most immediate images of human suffering. Yet behind these images is a hidden crisis. Across many of the world's poorest countries, armed conflict is destroying not just school infrastructure, but the hopes and ambitions of generations of children. The hidden crisis: Armed conflict and education documents the devastating effects of armed conflict on education. It examines the widespread human rights abuses keeping children out of school. The Report challenges an international aid system that is failing conflict-affected states, with damaging consequences for education. It warns that schools are often used to transmit intolerance, prejudice and social injustice. This ninth edition of the Education for All Global Monitoring Report calls on governments to demonstrate greater resolve in combating the culture of impunity surrounding attacks on schoolchildren and schools. It sets out an agenda for fixing the International aid architecture. And it identifies strategies for strengthening the role of education in peacebuilding. The Report includes statistical indicators on all levels of education in more than 200 countries and territories. It serves as an authoritative reference for education policy-makers, development specialists, researchers and the media

Book excerpt: “There is a lot of competition around Africa, and the only way to make investors more interested in our offerings is by showcasing the real opportunities present in our country and our appetite in technology transfer.” Chief Timipre Marlin Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources. The Energy Year Nigeria 2021 highlights Nigeria’s ambitious quest to ramp up production via marginal fields, increase its refining capacity through modular plants, advance gas utilisation with virtual pipelines and revamp its entire power sector to ultimately become Africa’s energy powerhouse. “Our strategy and focus for gas in 2021 is to drive the implementation of the country’s “Decade of Gas” initiatives and grow the overall importance of the industry via increasing its contribution to Nigeria’s GDP.” Engr. Sarki Auwalu, Director and CEO, Department of Petroleum Resources The Energy Year Nigeria 2021 elucidates how Nigeria’s energy industry has remained resilient while it undergoes a unique reshaping through its recently passed Petroleum Industry Bill, as well as the launch of its “Decade of Gas” initiative and the materialising of its “refining revolution” – all of which are propelling the country on its path towards energy transition and self-sufficiency. Produced in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Power, the Department of Petroleum Resources and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, this eighth edition of The Energy Year’s Nigeria series provides investors deep insight on the efforts made to push the country’s energy sector beyond the Covid-19 crisis. The report gives a detailed picture of the opportunities surrounding crude oil, natural gas and power at a time when Nigeria is driven by its pursuit of greater efficiency and a viable energy transition.
Book Synopsis African Migrants and the Refugee Crisis by : Olayiwola Abegunrin
Download or read book African Migrants and the Refugee Crisis written by Olayiwola Abegunrin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses African migration and the refugee crisis. Economic, political and social tension in the Middle East and in many parts of the Global South has induced historic mass migration across national and international borders. The situation is especially dire in Africa, where a sizable number of Africans have chosen or have been forced to leave their countries of origin for Europe and North America. Written by an international team of scholars, this edited book traces the refugee crisis around the world, telling the necessary story of forced migration, intentional exclusion, and human insecurity from an Afrocentric lens. The volume is divided into three sections. Section I places African migration within the broader contexts of international history, law, economics, and policy. Section II discusses cases of African migration to Europe, Latin America, and the Mediterranean. Section III considers negative consequences of mass African migration, including the restriction and criminalization of migration, post-traumatic stress disorder, and gender-based violence. A compelling account of risk, resilience, and global power dynamics, this volume will be useful to students and researchers interested in African studies, migration, peace and conflict studies, and policy as well as professionals, practitioners, NGOs, IGOs, governmental and humanitarian organizations.
