Book Synopsis Putting Nigeria to Work by : Volker Treichel
Download or read book Putting Nigeria to Work written by Volker Treichel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public debate in Nigeria on the country s progress since its return to democracy in 1999 has been dominated by two seemingly opposite themes. The first theme is the strong growth performance of the non-oil economy. This success has been marked by sharp increases in agriculture, trade, and construction and by the emergence of new industries in the financial, telecommunications, and entertainment sectors, supported by sound macroeconomic policies and structural reforms. The second, opposing theme is the seeming failure of Nigeria s much improved economic performance to reduce unemployment, especially among the young. Rising levels of unemployment have increased militancy among the young and impacted negatively on public order. 'Putting Nigeria to Work: A Strategy for Employment and Growth' looks at the ways in which Nigeria s improved economic performance has impacted the labor market. A number of relevant factors are carefully examined and analyzed, including industrial policy and the investment environment, the effects of restrictive trade policies on growth, and the ability of the technical and vocational education system to address the country s skills gap. The book proposes a strategy that will allow Nigeria to increase the availability of quality jobs, reduce rising youth unemployment, and sustain and further accelerate the country s economic performance and growth. At the core of this strategy are targeted interventions aimed at removing binding constraints to growth in sectors of the economy that are already growing fast, but have the potential to grow faster and have significant employment-creating potential.

Book Synopsis An Assessment of the Exchange Rate Pass-Through in Angola and Nigeria by : Ana Lariau
Download or read book An Assessment of the Exchange Rate Pass-Through in Angola and Nigeria written by Ana Lariau and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper estimates the exchange rate pass-through to consumer price inflation in Angola and Nigeria, with particular emphasis on the changes of the pass-through over time. Even though the two countries share smilar dependence on oil exports, this paper reveals different results. For Angola, the long-run exchange rate pass-through to prices is high, though it has weakened in recent years reflecting the de-dollarization of the economy. In Nigeria, there is no stable long-run relationship between the exchange rate and prices, and changes in the exchange rate do not have a significant pass-through effect on inflation. However, the passthrough effect on core inflation is significant.
Book Synopsis Développement, inégalités, pauvretés by : Nicola Maria Boccella
Download or read book Développement, inégalités, pauvretés written by Nicola Maria Boccella and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2005 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Dans l'essai introductif Growth and Inegality.

Book excerpt: Oil and gas production in Azerbaijan were projected to increase sharply in 2005 and 2006, respectively, reaching peaks of 1.3 million barrels a day in 2009 and 20 billion cubic meters a year in 2010. Although expected revenues over the next 20 years will be substantial, they are projected to return to 2004 levels by 2024. Book Synopsis Sustainable Development in Post-Pandemic Africa by : Fred Olayele
Download or read book Sustainable Development in Post-Pandemic Africa written by Fred Olayele and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With both domestic and external financing expected to dry up in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, this book argues that there is a need for fresh ideas and new strategies for achieving sustainable development in Africa. In addition to triggering the most severe recession in nearly a century, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted global value chains, causing unprecedented damage to healthcare systems, economies, and well-being, hitting the world’s most vulnerable people the hardest. Even before the pandemic, Africa was suffering from the effects of low commodity prices, sluggish GDP growth, high debt levels, low levels of domestic savings, and weak private capital inflows. This book argues that now, as the continent emerges from the current crisis, it will be important to reconfigure current financing sources under a forward-looking framework that incorporates other non-traditional financing tools and mechanisms such as public-private partnerships, sovereign wealth funds, gender lens investing, new growth drivers, and emerging and disruptive technologies. Finally, the book concludes by adopting a sectoral approach and examining the real economy impacts of new growth drivers such as agriculture value chains, industrialization, tourism, and the blue economy. Drawing on a range of original research as well as insights from practice, this book will be a useful guide for Global Development and African Studies researchers, as well as for policy makers, investors, finance specialists, and global business practitioners and entrepreneurs.
Book Synopsis Globality, Unequal Development, and Ethics of Duty by : Mahmoud Masaeli
Download or read book Globality, Unequal Development, and Ethics of Duty written by Mahmoud Masaeli and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do we have a duty to end poverty? Is this duty to alleviate poverty, or it is for healing of disempowerment? Based on what moral reasoning is this duty grounded? Must this reasoning be based on value consensus, or can it result in convergence on conclusions from plural moral premises? What results derive from this duty? To whom is this duty addressed? What are the dimensions of this duty? Is this a duty to help or a duty for justice? Is it a uniform duty or are there diverse lines of reasoning and justifications for it? Who must undertake this duty? How is the duty undertaken and fulfilled? Bringing together contributions investigating fundamental themes related to globality and ethics of duty, this volume offers a detailed analysis of these questions, while providing some policy solutions. Indeed, it provides a multifaceted and interdisciplinary dialogue about the ethics of duty in an age of globality and extreme poverty.
Book Synopsis Road to Industrialized Africa: Role of Efficient Factor Market in Firm Growth by : Manabu Nose
Download or read book Road to Industrialized Africa: Role of Efficient Factor Market in Firm Growth written by Manabu Nose and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a decade of rapid growth, industrialization has lost ground with shrinking manufacturing sector and high informality in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This paper explores how land market and labor regulations affect factor allocative efficiency and firm performance in SSA. Using pooled data on firm balance sheets for 40 countries in SSA, the results identify significant land and labor misallocations due to limited market allocation of land and inappropriate regulatory policies. Using variations in ethnic diversity and the intensity of regulatory actions to peer firms at subnational level as instrumental variables, local average treatment effects show large productivity gains from factor reallocations, especially for marginally productive firms. Panel data results for Nigerian firms confirm factor market inefficiency as a principal driver of declining productivity, while showing that the 2011 minimum wage reform increased firm size. The results imply that improving formal regulation is critical to support firm growth at the stage of weak legal capacity, while informal sector monitoring gets effective as legal capacity develops.
