The book will contribute to capacity building for complaint handling within local governments in Aceh and Nias as well as provide a wider sharing of experiences within governments and nongovernment organizations in Indonesia and beyond. A summary of lessons and recommendations draws together common strands from the 18 papers presented.

Book Synopsis Rebuilding Lives and Homes in Aceh and Nias, Indonesia by : Florian Steinberg
Download or read book Rebuilding Lives and Homes in Aceh and Nias, Indonesia written by Florian Steinberg and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 2004, a seaquake shook the Indian Ocean, producing a powerful tsunami. The greatest damage occurred in Indonesia, nearest the quake's epicenter. The Asian Development Bank responded with a $290 million grant under the Earthquake and Tsunami Emergency Support Project. Housing accounted for more of this grant than any other sector. While this book focuses on housing, more broadly it is about how implementing post-disaster projects under exceedingly difficult conditions can achieve success, while simultaneously incorporating the community-based approach recommended by donors. The book's refreshing glimpse into on-the-ground, post-disaster project implementation contains important lessons for future disaster-response donor assistance.

Book Synopsis Internal Migration in the Countries of Asia by : Martin Bell
Download or read book Internal Migration in the Countries of Asia written by Martin Bell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-20 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how population mobility varies among the countries of Asia. While much attention has been given to international migration, movement within countries is numerically much more significant. Coupling innovative methods developed in the global IMAGE project with the contextual knowledge of experts on 15 Asian countries, the book measures and explains how people across Asia differ in the probability of changing residence, the ages at which they move, and the impact of these migrations on the distribution of human settlement within each country. It demonstrates how stage of economic development, coupled with historical events, local contingencies, cultural norms, political frameworks, and the physical environment shape human migration. By using rigorous statistics in a robust comparative framework, this book provides a clear understanding of contemporary migration in Asia for students and academics, and a valuable resource for policy-makers and planners in Asia and beyond.

Book Synopsis Nuclear Risk Reduction in South Asia by : Michael Krepon
Download or read book Nuclear Risk Reduction in South Asia written by Michael Krepon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-11-26 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essys in this collection explore and analyze how to reduce the risk of nuclear war in South Asia. Contributors work to introduce the theory and methodology of nuclear risk reduction, to provide specific measures that might work best in the region, and to consider the consequences of missile defense options for stability in Asia. Much work is needed to recduce nuclear dangers between India and Pakistan. While the fact that both countries possess nuclear weapons may prevent a full-blown conventional or nuclear war, the presence of these weapons in the region may also encourage the use of violence at lower levels expecting escalation to be contained by a mutual desire to avoid the nuclear threshold. One only needs to look at the Kashmir conflict for confirmation of this paradox, with serious crises coming more frequently with more severity since the nuclear tests of 1998. Sustained efforts along the line suggested by the contributors of this volume are a crucial step toward reducing nuclear risk on the Subcontinent.
