Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Niagara Escarpment is the most prominent topographic feature in southern Ontario, and is a largely forested corridor 725 kilometers long which passes through the most heavily developed region in Canada. The Escarpment is a significant geological and hydrological feature, hosts many important animal and plant species (including the oldest trees in eastern North America), and was designated a biosphere reserve in 1990. This paper reviews the historical context for the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve, the Niagara Escarpment Plan as the implementing tool for the Reserve, and land use issues in the Escarpment area. It discusses four issues related to environment versus development: mineral resource extraction, lot creation in rural areas, urban sprawl, and clash of urban/rural values. It concludes with a discussion on public and private issues in the Escarpment.

Download or read book The Biosphere written by Natarajan Ishwaran and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-03-14 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book entitled "The Biosphere", researchers from all regions of the world report on their findings to explore the origins, evolution, ecosystems and resource utilization patterns of the biosphere. Some describe the complexities and challenges that humanity faces in its efforts to experiment and establish a new partnership with nature in places designated as biosphere reserves by UNESCO under its Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. At the dawn of the 21st century humanity is ever more aware and conscious of the adverse consequences that it has brought upon global climate change and biodiversity loss. We are at a critical moment of reflection and action to work out a new compact with the biosphere that sustains our own wellbeing and that of our planetary companions. This book is a modest attempt to enrich and enable that special moment and its march ahead in human history.

Book excerpt: With more than 100 beautiful colour photographs from dozens of communities, this book will be savoured by all those who treasure this precious landscape The Niagara Escarpment stretches more than 700 kilometres from Niagara Falls, through Hamilton, to Tobermory on the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, before dipping under Georgian Bay. Designated a United Nations biosphere reserve in 1990, the meandering ridge is home to over 300 bird species and other wildlife, many of Ontario's rare plant species, and the oldest old-growth forest east of the Rocky Mountains. The Bruce Trail, the pre-eminent walking trail in southern Ontario, created by naturalists working with private landowners, now winds along its length. The photographs of Sandy Bell, Vic MacBournie and John MacRae, taken from more than seventy points south to north, show the Escarpment in all its variety, moods and seasons. Providing background on the story of the protection of this precious landform -- and the continuing challenge of demands for resource extraction and urban expansion -- is an introductory essay by Joan Little, a resident and friend of the Escarpment who has worked with citizens and government to preserve its unique features.

Book Synopsis Transforming Parks and Protected Areas by : Kevin S. Hanna
Download or read book Transforming Parks and Protected Areas written by Kevin S. Hanna and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ** This title was originally published in 2007. The version published in 2012 is a PB reprint of the original HB** The protection of natural resources and biodiversity through protected areas is increasingly based on ecological principles. Simultaneously the concept of ecosystem-based management has become broadly accepted and implemented over the last two decades. However, this period has also seen unprecedented rapid global social and ecological change, which has weakened many protection efforts. These changes have created an awareness of opportunities for innovative approaches to managing protected areas and of the need to integrate social and economic concerns with ecological elements in protected areas and parks management. A rare collection of articles that fuses academic theory, critique of practice and practical knowledge, Transforming Parks and Protected Areas analyzes and critiques these theories, practices, and philosophies, looking in-detail at the emerging issues in the design and operation of parks and protected areas. Addressing critical dynamics and current practices in parks and protected areas management, the excellent volume goes well beyond simple managerial solutions and descriptions of standard practice. With contributions from leading academics and practitioners, this book will be of value to all those working within ecology, natural resources, conservation and parks management as well as students and academics across the environmental sciences and land use management.
Book Synopsis National Parks and Protected Areas by : James Gordon Nelson
Download or read book National Parks and Protected Areas written by James Gordon Nelson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National parks and protected areas offer a wealth of ecological and social contributions or services to humans and life on earth. This book describes the strengths of national parks and protected areas in different parts of Europe and North America and the challenges to the full realization of their goals. It shows that they are useful not only in conserving rare species and biodiversity, but also in protecting water supply and other resources necessary to tourism and to economic and social development generally. Ideas and information on useful planning, management and decision-making arrangements are presented, and research needs are identified.
