Book excerpt: Audisee® eBooks with Audio combine professional narration and sentence highlighting for an engaging read aloud experience! A mighty river. A long history. For thousands of years, the Elwha river flowed north to the sea. The river churned with salmon, which helped feed bears, otters, and eagles. The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, known as the Strong People located in the Pacific Northwest, were grateful for the river's abundance. All that changed in the 1790s when strangers came who did not understand the river's gifts. The strangers built dams, and the environmental consequences were disastrous. Sibert honoree Patricia Newman and award-winning illustrator Natasha Donovan join forces to tell the story of the Elwha, chronicling how the Strong People successfully fought to restore the river and their way of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to colonial America's best-known literary genre, Andrew Newman analyzes depictions of reading, writing, and recollecting texts in Indian captivity narratives. While histories of literacy and colonialism have emphasized the experiences of Native Americans, as students in missionary schools or as parties to treacherous treaties, captivity narratives reveal what literacy meant to colonists among Indians. Colonial captives treasured the written word in order to distinguish themselves from their Native captors and to affiliate with their distant cultural communities. Their narratives suggest that Indians recognized this value, sometimes with benevolence: repeatedly, they presented colonists with books. In this way and others, Scriptures, saintly lives, and even Shakespeare were introduced into diverse experiences of colonial captivity. What other scholars have understood more simply as textual parallels, Newman argues instead may reflect lived allegories, the identification of one's own unfolding story with the stories of others. In an authoritative, wide-ranging study that encompasses the foundational New England narratives, accounts of martyrdom and cultural conversion in New France and Mohawk country in the 1600s, and narratives set in Cherokee territory and the Great Lakes region during the late eighteenth century, Newman opens up old tales to fresh, thought-provoking interpretations.

Book excerpt: "The central works of Barnett Newman's oeuvre - many of which are reproduced here as full-page color plates - are the subject of an analytical study by Armin Zweite. This study not only gives a comprehensive appraisal of Newman's paintings, from his beginnings through his later works - predominantly large-format, monochromatic paintings - but also deals in detail with all of Newman's sculptures - "Here I", "Here II", and "Here III", "Broken Obelisk", "Lace Curtain for Mayor Daley", and "Zim Zum I" and "Zim Zum II"--As well as with Newman's Model for a Synagogue. The book affords a more differentiated insight into Newman's hermetic oeuvre than would ever be possible in separate treatises on individual parts or periods of Newman's work."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of JFK and Vietnam comes a book that uncovers the government's role in the Kennedy assassination more clearly than any previous inquiry. What was the extent of the CIA's involvement with Lee Harvey Oswald? Why was Oswald's file tampered with before the assassination of John F. Kennedy? And why did significant documents from that file mysteriously disappear? Oswald and the CIA answers these questions, not with theories, but with information from the primary sources themselves—ex-agents, officials, and secret records. To look at the Oswald file is to look at the most sensitive CIA operation of the Cold War. The story is as alarming as it is tragic; the lies and manipulations it reveals led directly to Kennedy's murder. Oswald and the CIA is a gripping journey to the darkest corners of the CIA.

Corn is a telegenic, perfect candidate-yet harbors secrets that threaten him. The group's goal is to implement their own foreign policy and fundamentally restructure American society. To achieve their goals, they form dangerous alliances. One is with a woman who manages the largest, and most corrupt, private pool of capital that has ever existed. And another with the brilliant, ruthless founder of Russia's most successful private military company: a mercenary's mercenary, who has ties to Vladimir Putin. He has his eye on Greta Webb-and while she would be wise to avoid him at all costs, she cannot. Journeying across the globe from New York to Washington to Middle Eastern war zones to wine cellars in the French countryside to Putin's private restaurant in St. Petersburg, the group of Americans become enmeshed in this underground world. And as they discover the secret of the dark money's pool's success-which involves manipulating the markets to rake in billions of dollars-they come into ever increasing danger. Ultimately the team of Americans must decide whether their ultimate objectives are worth the cost of ruthlessly sacrificing not just a few but potentially many human lives. Brilliantly told and filled with jaw-dropping action and unforgettable characters, Undermoney offers a savage look at the secret lives of the world's richest people"--

Book excerpt: The second edition of Joe Newman's acclaimed book Raising Lions is an essential guide for parents and teachers raising strong-willed, precocious children. It offers clear insights into what motivates the most challenging behaviors, and what kinds of responses turn these behaviors around. "One of the best books on child-rearing I've ever read. Joe Newman describes a cultural shift that has reinforced anxiety and behavior disorders in children by negating parental authority. Even more important, he provides specific, non-punitive ways for parents to help their kids by taking back their authority. Filled with examples and experiences from the author's own life as a child with A.D.H.D., the book is a treasure-trove of useful information." Barry Michels, psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author of The Tools. "This book is packed with useful information. It is an insightful and practical guide for managing children. I would recommend it to any parent." L. Alan Sroufe, Professor Emeritus Ph.D. University of Minnesota Current childrearing techniques seek to develop children who are confident, self-assured, and unafraid to speak their minds-lions instead of lambs. Although largely positive, this shift has brought with it some very serious problems in our children's behavior. Without going back to an authoritarian model, Joe Newman has developed new ways of helping children develop the ability to self-regulate without undermining their confidence and individuality. Raising Lions challenges us to re-examine our interactions and relationships with children, re-think the root causes of behavior problems and find new ways to support healthy, happy development. For over 20 years Joe Newman has worked with children, parents, teachers, and administrators to help them understand and improve child behavior.

This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, scholars have assumed that the genius of John Henry Newman remained underappreciated among his Roman Catholic contemporaries. In order to find the true impact of his work, one must therefore look to the century following his death. Newman's Early Roman Catholic Legacy, 1845-1854 unpicks this claim. Examining a host of overlooked evidence from England and the European continent, C. Michael Shea considers letters, records of conversations, and obscure and unpublished theological exchanges to show how Newman's 1845 Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine influenced a host of Catholic teachers, writers, and Church authorities in nineteenth-century Rome and beyond. Shea explores how these individuals employed Newman's theory of development to argue for the definability of the new dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary during the years preceding the doctrine's definition in 1854. This study traces how the theory of development became a factor in determining the very language that the Roman Catholic Church would use in referring to doctrinal change over time. In this way, Newman's Early Roman Catholic Legacy, 1845-1854 uncovers a key dimension of Newman's significance in modern religious history.

Book excerpt: Cardinal Newman died on August 11, 1890 at the age of 89.Although his mind remained lucid to the end, his body declined to the point that in the summer of that year it became evident to all that the end was near. However, on the evening of August 9 he staged a remarkable rally which was recorded by Father William Neville, his secretary and caregiver in his final years. Not recognizing his youthful step he was surprised when Newman entered his room, and he was"-unbent, erect to the full height of his best days in the fifties; he was without support of any kind. His whole carriage was, it may be said, soldierlike, and so dignified; and his countenance was most attractive to look at; even great age seemed to have gone from his face, and with it all careworn signs; his very look conveyed the cheerfulness and gratitude of his mind, and what he said was so kind, his voice was quite fresh and strong, his whole appearance was that of power, combined with complete calm..." [Ward,"The Life of Cardinal Newman, vol.2,537] At his request he was buried in the grave of his friend Ambrose St. John. On the memorial were engraved the words "Ex umbris et imaginibus in veritatem"-from shadows and illusions into truth. All of his life Newman had been a soldier for Christ-prepared to do battle for the truth. This is the story of his spiritual journey; emerging from the shadows into the fullness of truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing upon the arguments Newman uses to define Catholicism against the hostility of English protestants, this book is a reader's guide to the books Newman published soon after his own conversion: Mixed Congregations; Difficulties of Anglicans; Present Position of Catholics, and his two novels. While the arguments advanced in Difficulties of Anglicans and Present Position of Catholics are confrontationally direct, his novels Loss and Gain and Callista respond to the attacks of Elizabeth Harris' From Oxford to Rome and Charles Kingsley's Hypatia by the indirection which typifies Newman's fictional rhetoric.
