Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Voyages to Carolina offers a bold new approach for understanding and telling North Carolina's history. Recognizing the need for such a fresh approach and reflecting a generation of recent scholarship, eighteen distinguished authors have sculpted a broad, inclusive narrative of the state's evolution over more than four centuries. The volume provides new lenses and provocative possibilities for reimagining the state's past. Transcending traditional markers of wars and elections, the contributors map out a new chronology encompassing geological realities; the unappreciated presence of Indians, blacks, and women; religious and cultural influences; and abiding preferences for industrial development within the limits of "progressive" politics. While challenging traditional story lines, the authors frame a candid tale of the state's development. Contributors: Dorothea V. Ames, East Carolina University Karl E. Download or read book Argall written by William T. Vollmann and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2002-11-26 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the National Book Award-winning author of Europe Central – a hugely original fictional history of Pocahontas, John Smith, and the Jamestown colony in Virginia In Argall, the third novel in his Seven Dreams series, William T. Vollmann alternates between extravagant Elizabethan language and gritty realism in an attempt to dig beneath the legend surrounding Pocahontas, John Smith, and the founding of the Jamestown colony in Virginia-as well as the betrayals, disappointments, and atrocities behind it. With the same panoramic vision, mythic sensibility, and stylistic daring that he brought to the previous novels in the Seven Dreams series--hailed upon its inception as "the most important literary project of the '90s" (The Washington Post)--Vollmann continues his hugely original fictional history of the clash of Native Americans and Europeans in the New World. In reconstructing America's past as tragedy, nightmare, and bloody spectacle, Vollmann does nothing less than reinvent the American novel.

Book Synopsis The Voyage of John de Verazzano by : Giovanni Da Verrazzano
Download or read book The Voyage of John de Verazzano written by Giovanni Da Verrazzano and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Voyage of John De Verazzano, written 1524, was a letter to King Francis the I of France by Giovanni (or John) da Verrazzano upon his exploration of North Carolina and the Pamlico Sound, which he thought was the entrance to the Pacific Ocean. His analysis resulted in one of many errors in the way North America was represented on a map; it was not fully and correctly mapped until the late 1800s. The letter, translated from its original Italian, provides an interesting insight into how the newly-discovered continent was viewed by explorers and other countries. Also included is an account, in Italian, of Verazzano's discovery of New York Harbor.GIOVANNI DA VERRAZZANO (1485-1528) was an Italian explorer of North America, the first European since the colonization of the Americas by the Norse colonies to explore the Atlantic coast. Born near Florence, he soon moved to France and started a career as a navigator, after which he was invited to explore North America by the French King Francis I. Throughout his years, he explored New York Harbor, Narragansett Bay, the coast of Maine, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, Florida, the Bahamas, and the Lesser Antilles. Verrazzano made a total of three trips, dying in 1528 after embarking on an island and being killed and eaten by the local Carib cannibals.

Download or read book The Lost Rocks written by David La Vere and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the 1587 Lost Colony of Roanoke was not lost? What if the survivors left Roanoke Island, North Carolina and found their way to Georgia? That is the scenario scholars contemplated when a series of engraved stones were found in the 1930's. The first, found near the Chowan River in North Carolina, claimed that Eleanor Dare and a few other settlers had made their way inland after an Indian attack wiped out the rest of the colony. Among the dead were Eleanor's daughter, Virginia Dare, the first English child born in North America, and Eleanor's husband Ananias. The remaining Dare Stones, more than forty in number, told a fantastic tale of how Eleanor and the survivors made their way overland, first to South Carolina, and then to Georgia. If true, North Carolina stood to lose one of its most cherished historical legends. Author David La Vere weaves the story of the Dare Stones with that of the Lost Colony of Roanoke in a tale that will fire your imagination and give you pause at the same time. In this true story that shook the world during the 1930s and early 1940s, the question on everyone's mind was: Had the greatest American mystery - the Lost Colony - finally been solved?
