Some selections were general favorites more than a century ago, and all, we believe, are examples of dignified hymns and simple tunes suitable for use by our youth. The youngest children easily learn and greatly enjoy the well-known and ennobling compositions, both ancient and modern, if proper intelligence is used in their selection and direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laudes Domini: A Selection of Spiritual Songs, Ancient Modern, for Use in the Prayer-Meeting Recognizing these obligations, the editors of the new manual OF praise have endeavored to bring together a body of religious poetry and music which shall answer the growing needs of the church. In the search for fresh material, however, the editors have not forgotten the claims of that noble repository of song from which the church has drawn such an abundance of spiritual nurture in the past. They have aimed to gratify the reasonable demands of both the conservative and the liberal tem perament, seeking to meet what they conceive to be the needs of the future as well as of the present. Many will regret the absence of certain familiar friends among both hymns and tunes. This is unavoidable. Certain old tunes have been rejected on account of triviality or dulness; they must give way to more worthy successors. Hymns glar ingly faulty in technical details, or else prosaic, over-dogmatic, or unsuited to the purpose for which a hymn as distinct from an individual lyric exists, have been cast aside. The editors believe that nothing of indispensable value has been omitted, and that in any case the loss has been more than made good. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Christian Life Tms book is intended to give inspiration and expression to the larger and richer conceptions of the Christian life now prevailing. It seeks to kindle hope, arouse courage, and stimulate noble purposes. It aims to develop trust and joy, devotion to duty and unselfish service, filial love to God and fraternal love to man. The hymns have been selected because of real poetic merit, and because they breathe a spirit of genuine experience and practical service. While the number is limited, every phase of Christian worship and life is sufficiently covered. Hymns of aspiration, of character, of con duct, of the home, of devotion to the common weal, of effort to secure a kingdom of heaven on earth, of the new spirit of brotherhood are here. Christ is given the central place. Not only is his earthly career fully illustrated, but groups of hymns present him as the Eternal Friend, the Good Shepherd, the Rock of Ages, the Master and the Light of the World. Hymns of the church are here, and especially of its missionary activities, issuing in The Triumphant Kingdom. Christian optimism finds voice in these hymns. Since patriotism is a part of religion an unusual number of national hymns is brought together here. The tunes have been chosen with like care, that the best hymns may be matched with music of the finest quality. The first aim has beenito secure singable tunes, such as congregations will delight to sing tunes with a haunting melody, and such as fit the words. The second aim has been to have music of such excellence in harmony and construction as to be attractive to trained musicians as well as others. The old, familiar tunes are here, as well as those of the latest and best modern composers. Sixty percent of the tunes are already either old or new favorites, and it is hoped that many of the others will speedily become such. It is believed that every tune in these pages, under competent leadership, may be readily learned by any congregation. The great Canticles which the Church has used for centuries are here set to the best music of ancient and modern composers. It is hoped that a much larger use of this form of worship song may be made. With a little practice whole congregations can easily learn to chant under a competent director. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voice of Melody: A Choice Collection of Hymn Tunes, for Choirs, Prayer-Meetings, Congregations, and Family Use IN adding, to the number of church-music books already published, a new claimant for popular favor, a few words of explanation may not be out of place. Although many collections of sacred music have been recently issued, in but few instances-has the Convenience of the purchaser been consulted. Ordi narily, the volumes are too large to be conveniently carried from place to place, and generally contain much matter that is seldom of any practical use. Let the reader ask any one who' is a member of a choir or is in the habit of using some particular collection, and he will find him familiar with perhaps one-tenth of the tunes in the book; A few new airs in each col lection may command attention and secure popular regard, but the universal taste Will be found to fix on the same old favorites. The remainder might almost as Well be so much blank paper. The present work, it IS believed, is not liable to this objection. -with a few exceptions, the airs it contains are such as have proved themselves well adapted for use in devotional singing. The public must decide on the merits of the rest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
