Book excerpt: This book focuses on the newly completed trade fair hall in Leipzig. Both in terms of architecture and urban design, the new industrial exhibition hall in Leipzig, rebuilt in connection with the overall reconstruction program for East Germany, stands as one of the most significant pieces of architecture anywhere today. At the heart of its concept lies the desire to achieve an artful synthesis of allied disciplines: urban building, landscape design, garden architecture, architecture, civil engineering and the fine arts.

Book excerpt: During the Cold War, Britain had an astonishing number of contacts and connections with one of the Soviet Bloc's most hard-line regimes: the German Democratic Republic. The left wing of the British Labour Party and the Trade Unions often had closer ties with communist East Germany than the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). There were strong connections between the East German and British churches, women's movements, and peace movements; influential conservative politicians and the Communist leadership in the GDR had working relationships; and lucrative contracts existed between business leaders in Britain and their counterparts in East Germany. Based on their extensive knowledge of the documentary sources, the authors provide the first comprehensive study of Anglo-East German relations in this surprisingly under-researched field. They examine the complex motivations underlying different political groups' engagement with the GDR, and offer new and interesting insights into British political culture during the Cold War.
Book Synopsis Migration and the Construction of German Identities, 1949–2004 by : Bethany Erin Hicks
Download or read book Migration and the Construction of German Identities, 1949–2004 written by Bethany Erin Hicks and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration, in its many forms, has often been found at the center of public and private discourse surrounding German nationalism and identity, significantly influencing how both states construct conceptions of what it means to be "German" at any given place and time. The attempt at constructing an ethnically homogeneous Third Reich was shattered by the movement of refugees, expellees, and soldiers in the aftermath of the Second World War, and the contracting of foreign nationals as Gastarbeiter in the Federal Republic and Vertragsarbeiter in the German Democratic Republic in the 1960s and 70s diversified the ethnic landscape of both Cold War German states during the latter half of the Cold War. Bethany Hicks shows how the regional migration of East Germans into the western federal states both during and after German unification challenged essential Cold War assumptions concerning the ability to integrate two very different German populations.
