Book Synopsis Three-dimensional Object Reconstruction Using Structured Light and Two Two-dimensional Images by : Philippe Lavoie

This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For machine vision and for graphical representation of real objects in a computer environment, the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the image of a real object has become a key technique. A few methods such as range finding, which use laser scanners, computer tomography, based on CTR or MRI machines, computational stereo, etc. were developed. Computational stereo is broadly defined as the recovery of 3D characteristics of a scene from a series of images obtained from different points in the three dimensional (Euclidean) space. In this thesis, a new algorithm and system is introduced and developed for the 3D reconstruction of the images of real objects from two 2D images required with two cameras. The algorithm is based on a new matching method, a new procedure for the determination of the fundamental matrix used in stereo vision, and a new technique for stereo fusion. The novelty of the matching procedure, and of the determination of the camera alignment, consists of the projection of a structured light pattern on the real object, the pattern being created using a pseudo-random encoded mesh (PRBA) (34). The novelty of the stereo fusion algorithm consists of the application of the dynamic programming principle (DP) (5) (27) using a cost function which contains the information obtained from the list of matched points. It is also proposed to use an autoregressive (AR) modeling technique for calculating the stereo disparity of each pixel of the two images. The autoregressive filter helps the DP part of the algorithm to calculate the disparity of the pixels when the above pixels are occluded. The above proposed methods offer three distinctive advantages over a conventional stereo system: (1) It easily generates a list of matching points. (2) It adds structure to an object without textures. (3) It is less computational intensive.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction plays an important role in imaging research filed. Structured light technology has been widely used in 3D imaging, recognition and measurement, indicating great industrial and commercial value. In this thesis, a simple and robust technique of Moiré topography with single-image capture and incorporating digital filtering along with a four-step digitally implemented phase-shifting method is introduced for 3D surface mapping. Feature details in the order of tens to hundreds of microns can be achieved using interferometrically generated structured light to illuminate the object surface. The feasibility of this technique is verified experimentally, and applications to metallic surfaces are demonstrated. Next, a simple non-interferometric incoherent light propagation model is introduced to perform 3D profiling of transparent objects with typical thicknesses in the order of mm to cm by analyzing the distorted captured image behind the object. A two-dimensional (2D) cosine fringe is used as the incident reference image, whose periodicity is markedly altered by the shape of the object. By monitoring the local change in the period, the surface profile is simulated and optimized to achieve minimal error with experimental data to determine the final morphology. Besides, core principles of ghost imaging and optical scan holography are also discussed.

Book Synopsis Real-time Full-field Range-sensing for Three-dimensional Surface-shape Measurement by : Peirong Jia
Download or read book Real-time Full-field Range-sensing for Three-dimensional Surface-shape Measurement written by Peirong Jia and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional (3-D) surface-geometry measurement using structured light is commonly used for digital modeling of an object or environment when the geometry is unknown. Digital fringe projection with phase-shifting has become an increasingly common measurement method as it is a full-field method to improve acquisition speed over point-by-point and line-by-line methods, and it encodes all lines in the pattern to reduce the ambiguity problem that occurs with multiple-line projection methods. However, fringe-projection phase-shifting techniques are still limited in the speed of measurement, partly due to the use of projected light patterns that require complex computation, or that require several steps of repeated measurements with several images in order to reconstruct the 3-D object surface. This doctoral dissertation addresses the development of new methods for real-time full-field range sensing by fringe-projection phase-shifting techniques, to use more efficient algorithms. It also addresses the design, calibration, and measurement-accuracy testing of a new full-field real-time range-sensing system based on the developed methods. A novel 3-D shape measurement technique, called triangular-pattern phase-shifting profilometry, is developed in this research. The proposed method utilizes triangular gray-level-coded fringe patterns and newly developed intensity-ratio generation algorithms, essential to reconstruct a 3-D object surface. The minimum number of measurements required to reconstruct an unknown 3-D object is two, which is less than the minimum number of measurements required for the traditional sinusoidal-pattern and trapezoidal-pattern phase-shifting methods. Compared with the sinusoidal-pattern and trapezoidal-pattern phase-shifting methods, the new method involves less processing because of the simple intensity-ratio computation used and because fewer images or measurement steps are required to reconstruct the 3-D object. Extension of the method by increasing the number of phase-shifting steps was found to increase measurement accuracy. An optimal value of pitch of the projected triangular fringe pattern was found for each extended method. Two error compensation methods, repeated phase-offset and intensity-ratio error compensation, are proposed to reduce the measurement error, mainly caused by fringe projection non-linearity and image defocus. Error reductions of 24.0% and 28.5% were achieved, respectively. An off-line 3-D shape measurement system and a real-time 3-D shape measurement system have been developed with the proposed triangular-pattern phase-shifting method.

Book Synopsis 3D Surface Reconstruction by : Francesco Bellocchio
Download or read book 3D Surface Reconstruction written by Francesco Bellocchio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-28 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3D Surface Reconstruction: Multi-Scale Hierarchical Approaches presents methods to model 3D objects in an incremental way so as to capture more finer details at each step. The configuration of the model parameters, the rationale and solutions are described and discussed in detail so the reader has a strong understanding of the methodology. Modeling starts from data captured by 3D digitizers and makes the process even more clear and engaging. Innovative approaches, based on two popular machine learning paradigms, namely Radial Basis Functions and the Support Vector Machines, are also introduced. These paradigms are innovatively extended to a multi-scale incremental structure, based on a hierarchical scheme. The resulting approaches allow readers to achieve high accuracy with limited computational complexity, and makes the approaches appropriate for online, real-time operation. Applications can be found in any domain in which regression is required. 3D Surface Reconstruction: Multi-Scale Hierarchical Approaches is designed as a secondary text book or reference for advanced-level students and researchers in computer science. This book also targets practitioners working in computer vision or machine learning related fields.
