Book excerpt: In 1909-11 Robert Lloyd Praeger brought a team of 100 scientific specialists from all over Europe to map the flora, fauna, geology and archaeology of Clare Island, a small, exposed Atlantic island off the west coast. The gathering led to the publication of the path-breaking 'Clare Island Survey'. A century later the survey was repeated as the 'New Survey of Clare Island' (1992-2009) and both works were published extensively by the Royal Irish Academy. This fourth volume in the series is devoted to the Abbey on Clare Island - a national monument in State care - which has retained much of its medieval wall paintings. It documents the images, illustrates them in colour and places them in the context of late medieval Irish art.

Download or read book New Survey of Clare Island: Geology written by Críostóir Mac Cárthaigh and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paperback 128pp; 297x210mm; published 2001. The first Clare Island Survey of 1909-11 was the most ambitious natural history project ever undertaken in Ireland and the first major biological survey of a specific area carried out in the world. The New Survey constitutes a fresh baseline study using up-to-date methodology to provide a comprehensive description of the island from its bedrocks to its biotic communities. The survey traces the history of human occupation and the impact of human activity on Clare Island. It has revealed almost a century of environmental change and will provide an invaluable source for future environmental monitoring. This second volume examines the geology of Clare Island. The island's physical appearance today reflects a geological history of over 500 million years. Major geological boundaries, now expressed as faults, run through the island. Repeated movements along these faults have produced the complex distribution of rock types that continues to fascinate geological researchers. Articles in this volume provide an introduction to the geology of the island and its Silurian and Carboniferous rocks, interpret the age of the Ballytoohy Formation of the northern part of the island using fossil microflora, describe the enigmatic fossil Peltoclados clarus found in the Silurian rocks, discuss rocks that have intruded from considerable depth beneath the island and consider the history of the last two million years, the Quaternary period, using evidence from fossil pollen.

Book Synopsis Darwin, Praeger & the Clare Island Surveys by : Roisín Jones
Download or read book Darwin, Praeger & the Clare Island Surveys written by Roisín Jones and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated, 48-page book leads the reader through the story of how Darwin came by his ideas, how Robert Lloyd Praeger and other Irish scientists were influenced by them, and how this brought about the gathering of eminent researchers from all over Europe to a small exposed Atlantic island, culminating in the publication of the Clare Island Survey. Darwin, Praeger and the Clare Island Surveys celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Clare Island Survey and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species by showing how Praeger and his co-workers on the Clare Island Survey strove to investigate some of the questions at the heart of Darwin's work, 'throwing light on the question of island life and the problems of dispersal.' The book also considers the relevance of the first surveys findings today, highlighting the work of the modern New Survey of Clare Island (1992-2009) and the unique insights gained into the increasingly important issues of turnover of species, climate change, and loss of habitat.

Book excerpt: This volume, the final in the New Survey of Clare Island series, comprises an interesting collection of papers describing a diverse range of invertebrate and vertebrate taxa found on the island, including ostracods, molluscs, spiders and mammals. As we move through the Anthropocene with its many facets of global change, it is important that we understand what is happening to biodiversity in Ireland. The contributions in this volume, which are interspersed with nuggets of ecological theory and descriptions of the life history of the many species found on Clare Island, provide strong evidence of the need for increased investment in studies of Irish biodiversity. The Royal Irish Academy's New Survey of Clare Island, a unique multidisciplinary endeavour that together with Robert Lloyd Praeger's first Clare Island Survey provides an invaluable body of research informing future conservation of natural and built heritage of Ireland and Europe. The first Clare Island Survey of 1909-11 was the most ambitious natural history project ever undertaken in Ireland and the first major biological survey of a specific area carried out in the world.
