Book Synopsis Balanced Urban Development: Options and Strategies for Liveable Cities by : Basant Maheshwari
Download or read book Balanced Urban Development: Options and Strategies for Liveable Cities written by Basant Maheshwari and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unique synthesis of concepts and tools to examine natural resource, socio-economic, legal, policy and institutional issues that are important for managing urban growth into the future. The book will particularly help the reader to understand the current issues and challenges and develop strategies and practices to cope with future pressures of urbanisation and peri-urban land, water and energy use challenges. In particular, the book will help the reader to discover underlying principles for the planning of future cities and peri-urban regions in relation to: (i) Balanced urban development policies and institutions for future cities; (ii) Understanding the effects of land use change, population increase, and water demand on the liveability of cities; (iii) Long-term planning needs and transdisciplinary approaches to ensure the secured future for generations ahead; and (iv) Strategies to adapt the cities and land, water and energy uses for viable and liveable cities. There are growing concerns about water, food security and sustainability with increased urbanisation worldwide. For cities to be liveable and sustainable into the future there is a need to maintain the natural resource base and the ecosystem services in the peri-urban areas surrounding cities. This need is increasing under the looming spectre of global warming and climate change. This book will be of interest to policy makers, urban planners, researchers, post-graduate students in urban planning, environmental and water resources management, and managers in municipal councils.
Book Synopsis All Culture is Local by : Lisa Andersen
Download or read book All Culture is Local written by Lisa Andersen and published by UTS ePRESS. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outcome from a five year Australian Research Council funded research project, CAMRA cultural asset mapping in regional Australia project (LP0882238). Over this time four universities, four local governments, and peak regional, state and federal agencies sought to develop knowledge that would enable better informed planning for arts and cultural development in rural and regional communities. Over the course of the project, it became evident that rural-regional local government staff and cultural decision makers need better place-specific data and are keen to learn from the experiences of other local governments to inform their own planning. This book is CAMRA’s response to that need and includes 17 case studies on good practice in (1) Cultural Mapping and Data Collection and (2) Cultural Planning. The case studies have been written with the aim of making ideas and processes transferrable for any regional local authority - with the resource implications made clear – and are ordered using Australian Standard Geographical Classification-Remoteness Areas for local government area.

Book Synopsis Locating Suburbia by : Paula Hamilton
Download or read book Locating Suburbia written by Paula Hamilton and published by UTS ePRESS. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The identity of suburbia, so far as it can be ascribed one, is shifting and insecure, a borderline and liminal space. Dominant stereotypes have listed it as ‘on the margins’ beyond edges of cultural sophistication and tradition’ and the areas that make up ‘sprawl’. But in the twenty-first century this static view has to be modified. As is evident from this collection, suburban dwellers themselves have redefined themselves. This collection explores the range and complexity of twenty-first century responses to city suburbs, predominantly in Sydney. It draws on a range of approaches – from history to creative non-fiction and multi-media.
Book Synopsis By-roads and Hidden Treasures by : Paul Ashton
Download or read book By-roads and Hidden Treasures written by Paul Ashton and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2015 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is keeping people strong in isolated and under-populated locales, and how much of that is cultural? In 2008 the Cultural Asset Mapping for Regional Australia (CAMRA) project was born with the very simple question: 'how can we best map regional culture in contemporary Australia so that we can assess that culture's value?' In the five years that followed, what transpired was an unpredicatable journey into unlikely places and too-often neglected communities across regional Australia, from western Sydney to the central desert, from east coast surfboard-shapers to Torres Straight hip-hop musicians. Their experiences, stories and insights confronted existing assumptions, and challenged many of the cherished precepts of cultural policy and creative industries research. By-roads and Hidden Treasures brings together the project's researchers, cultural critics and arts and creative industry figures to discuss culture and its connection to community, particularly in isolated circumstances. The book contains thought-provoking discussions on regional Australia's colonial and cultural heritage, and details innovative new methods for measuring cultural assets, as well as reflecting on fostering collaborations with peak cultural bodies in order to inform imminent policy and planning decisions for regional Australia.
