Pudgie's real world, however, is a horrific world of indignity, humiliation, anger, and fear. Clown Town is a utopian world of fantasy for young boys growing up in a Chicago suburb during the 1950s. The Prologue establishes the adult first-person narrator in the present tense. He is forced to reminisce about his youth when the eminent death of his mother rekindles old fears and personality quirks that had haunted his life. His journey backward leads the reader to the death of a neighborhood man, the death of Pudgie's grandfather, and the death of a schoolmate in a historic Chicago school fire of 1958. Pudgie also struggles with a volatile temper when teased about his crossed left eye. The temper threatens his existence in a "normal" school. Along the way, the narrative treats the reader to a nostalgic look at the 1950s (the music, the cars, the TV shows, the movies, the mores), a naive child's interpretation of sex, and an adult perspective of childhood adventures such as smoking, competing in sports, and participating in petty crime.

During the 1970s and 1980s, a kind of secularism in biomedicine and related areas was encouraged by the need for a neutral language that could provide common ground for guiding clinical practice and research protocols. Tom Beauchamp and James Childress, in their pivotal The Principles of Biomedical Ethics, achieved this neutrality through an approach that came to be known as "principlist bioethics." In Pastoral Aesthetics, Nathan Carlin critically engages Beauchamp and Childress by revisiting the role of religion in bioethics and argues that pastoral theologians can enrich moral imagination in bioethics by cultivating an aesthetic sensibility that is theologically-informed, psychologically-sophisticated, therapeutically-oriented, and experientially-grounded. To achieve these ends, Carlin employs Paul Tillich's method of correlation by positioning four principles of bioethics with four images of pastoral care, drawing on a range of sources, including painting, fiction, memoir, poetry, journalism, cultural studies, clinical journals, classic cases in bioethics, and original pastoral care conversations. Book excerpt: This book details results of a study that sought to understand the relationship of children who were provided palliative cancer care, their families and the palliative care unit team members with healthcare clowns of an organization that is part of this team. More specifically, the book explores the roles healthcare clowns play in an Oncology Unit and PINDA center in Santiago, Chile. With a qualitative approach, an emergent and cross-sectional design, and strict ethical considerations, data were collected between December 2019 and December 2020. In total, 36 participants were interviewed, while drawings and photographs were collected as documents, and discussion groups were held for each cluster (encompassing mothers, the clinical team and healthcare clowns) to deepen aspects revealed in the interview analysis. Within the book, the results of the research are arranged in emerging themes related to positive effects on well-being and quality of life, especially for validation and emotional regulation, the humane healthcare that the healthcare clown provides in this context, the healthcare clown as a mediator in this transition period, bonds of friendship with children and their inclusion as family members, and the complementarity of this technique with traditional treatments.
