This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on new and exciting approaches in the molecular and clinical management of gastrointestinal tumors. The first part presents recent insights into carcinogenesis, including alterations in cyclins and adhesion receptors, molecular structures which might be new targets of gene therapy. The second part of the volume offers new diagnostic tools, such as receptors for gastrointestinal hormones, proliferation markers, tumor suppressor proteins, and the multiple drug resistance gene, predicting response to therapy and prognosis in gastrointestinal tumors. The third part gives an update of successful approaches in primary and secondary prevention of colorectal carcinoma. Nutritional factors and pharmacologic agents can clearly decrease the risk, and fecal occult blood tests and endoscopy can reduce the mortality in colorectal carcinoma. Laparoscopic staging with subsequent biopsy of suspicious lymph nodes provides essential information in esophageal and gastric cancer. In locally advanced gastric cancer, preoperative chemotherapy provides sufficient evidence to investigate this approach as compared to primary surgery. Standards have recently been established in the adjuvant treatment of patients with gastrointestinal carcinoma, and promising new drugs, including monoclonal antibodies, thymidylate synthase, and topoisomerase inhibitors, as well as taxoids, are currently being tested in phase I, II, and III trials of gastrointestinal tumors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a comprehensive, state of the art review of this field, and will serve as a valuable resource for clinicians, surgeons and researchers with an interest in GIST. The book reviews new data about risk factors for the disease, profiles the new staging system for GIST, highlights our current understanding of genetic mutations that lead to GIST, and provides new perspectives about imaging of GIST tumors. For localized disease, a greater appreciation of organ-sparing approaches and the importance of preservation of gastrointestinal function is discussed in detail, and advances in surgical techniques are highlighted, including minimally invasive surgery. For metastatic disease, the molecular biology of GIST is reviewed in a detailed and understandable manner, including the data that has fostered novel targeted approaches that have revolutionized management. Several landmark trials have been published in the last few years and are placed in context with respect to current management. Integration of surgery and systemic therapy through consolidative approaches has yielded provocative data that promises to further advance the field, and major advances in this domain are also discussed. Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors: Bench to Bedside will serve as a very useful resource for physicians and researchers dealing with, and interested in, this challenging malignancy. It provides a concise yet comprehensive summary of the current status of the field that will help guide patient management and stimulate investigative efforts. All chapters are written by experts in their fields and include the most up to date scientific and clinical information.

It presents the incidence, pathophysiologic and clinical aspects of the disease, the use of nuclear imaging in diagnosis, staging requirements, management of specific tumors, and surveillance after primary treatment of cancers. It addresses the various diagnostic/therapeutic options that are currently available or are most likely to become available in the near future according to a prioritized approach, thereby keeping to a minimum the number of diagnostic imaging procedures the patient is expected to undergo. Topics include basic science, clinical applications, radionuclide therapy, radioguided surgery, heart disease in the cancer patient, and adverse effects of cancer therapy. Each clinical chapter discusses the radionuclide procedures within an integrated framework, thereby identifying the information required for effective treatment of specific tumors. The book concludes with a series of updated cases that define and expand the didactic material in the clinical application chapters. Thoroughly updated and revised, the third edition incorporates new clinical evidence validating the use of radionuclides for diagnosis and therapy in oncology, new radiotracers, and the growing integration of imaging modalities into different types of hybrid imaging. With contributions from a group of internationally distinguished practitioners, Nuclear Oncology: From Pathophysiology to Clinical Applications, Third Edition, is a valuable reference for nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, medical and surgical oncologists, and other clinicians involved in the care and management of cancer patients.

GISTs represent the most common mesenchymal neoplasms arising within the gastrointestinal tract. The causative gene of this disease was originally discovered in Japan by Prof. Seichi Hirota in 1998, and since then numerous important advances – from basic to clinical aspects – have been reported from Japan. Professionals involved in the management of GISTs inevitably cite significant evidence and the state-of-the-art treatments from the Asian region, where has there is and inherently high prevalence of gastrointestinal cancers. Each expert author elucidates the cutting-edge knowledge on pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of GISTs, especially focusing on the highly valuable data from Japan. This attractive collection benefits not only oncologists but also basic researchers, general physicians and surgeons, as well as paramedical staff and medical students who are dealing with GISTs.

Book excerpt: The field of oncology benefits from several large-scale reference books and a host of monographs dedicated to specific cancers. However, truly excellent practice and review books are, surprisingly, quite scarce. Outside of a scant handful of books and online reference tools that offer clinical response practice and board review in a basic question and answer format, there are no resources that offer a robust, engaging, fully referenced tool for these vital activities in every oncologist’s and oncology trainee’s work. This print and electronic book seeks to fill that void, offering comprehensive question-and-answer style content that covers the entire specialty of oncology and provides practicing oncologists with a fascinating and immediately applicable compendium of vital information dealing with a well-balanced selection of common and uncommon cancers. At the heart of this book is the editor’s and authors’ desire to overcome the controversies and barriers to practice that usually emerge following the appearance of new data. In every section, the user is guided toward collaboration in ongoing clinical research – for example, via discussions of well-designed ongoing clinical trials in each specific area. Developed with both the teacher and learner in mind, this book also offers trainees and fellows an excellent opportunity to enhance their preparation for the ABIM oncology fellowship exam as well as for the oncology boards. It will also be an extremely useful tool for oncologists working toward the recertification exam. This comprehensive, beefy book includes hundreds of painstakingly developed multiple-choice and mini-case-based questions covering the principles of medical oncology, malignant hematology, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology. It also contains mini-cases and questions dealing with the biology, diagnosis, classification, staging, and multidisciplinary treatment of cancers at every anatomic site. The very latest topics are included, such as molecular techniques, targeted therapies, and translational cancer research. Concise but detailed answers are referenced to key journals and books, and evidence-based wherever possible. NCCN guidelines are also referenced as appropriate. With its powerful focus on take-home messages from and for actual clinical work, this book will help keep oncologists up to date, bridging the gaps between journal and reference literature, conferences, and their existing knowledge base.
