Book excerpt: This book presents wet chemical sol-gel and hydrothermal methods for 1D oxide nanostructure preparation. These methods represent an attractive route to multifunctional nanomaterials synthesis, as they are versatile, inexpensive and, thus, appropriate for obtaining a wide range of oxide materials with tailored morphology and properties. Three specific oxides (SiO2, TiO2, ZnO) are discussed in detail in order to illustrate the principle of the sol-gel and hydrothermal preparation of 1D oxide nanostructures. Other oxides synthesized via this method are also briefly presented. Throughout the book, the correlation between the tubular structure and the physico-chemical properties of these materials is highlighted. 1D oxide nanostructures exhibit interesting optical and electrical properties, due to their confined morphology. In addition, a well-defined geometry can be associated with chemically active species. For example, the pure SiO2 nanotubes presented a slight photocatalytic activity, while the Pt-doped SiO2 tubular materials act as microreactors in catalytic reactions. In the case of titania and titanate nanotubes, large specific surface area and pore volume, ion-exchange ability, enhanced light absorption, and fast electron-transport capability have attracted significant research interest. The chemical and physical modifications (microwave assisted hydrothermal methods) discussed here improve the formation kinetics of the nanotubes. The ZnO nanorods/tubes were prepared as random particles or as large areas of small, oriented 1D ZnO nanostructures on a variety of substrates. In the latter case a sol-gel layer is deposited on the substrate prior to the hydrothermal preparation. Using appropriate dopants, coatings of ZnO nanorods with controlled electrical behavior can be obtained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal oxides are receiving a great deal of attention because the materials produced are showing promise in the fields of catalysis and electrochemistry. These materials are being produced in a variety of ways, but the low temperature hydrothermal method is producing materials with desired structural characteristics. This study discusses efforts in mild reaction conditions of heat temperatures ranging between 160 and 200 deg C. The factors of pH, reaction time, reaction temperature, and the presence of organic templating cations are also studied to see their impact on traditional and microwave reactions. The relatively new field of microwave synthesis has shown that materials which customarily took 2 days of reaction time in the traditional ovens are reproducible in 30-60 minutes via the microwave ovens. The influence of the organic cations in the reaction mediums is the focus of this particular study. The ability to produce layered vanadium oxides in the absence of such templating cations as TMA would make the materials potentially better for electrochemical purposes. This research used a variety of solvents in an attempt to produce interlayer bridging by organic anions. The solvents of ethylene glycol and acetic acid act as those bridges, each with 2 accessible oxygens.

Book excerpt: The continuous hydrothermal technique was also extended to materials other than metal oxides by synthesizing lithium iron phosphate. Differences in the particle sizes obtained using the batch and continuous methods were shown to be due to the different mechanisms of particle formation in the two techniques. Better particle characteristics (size, size distribution and morphology) were obtained using the continuous hydrothermal technique than using the batch hydrothermal method.

This research pertains to the synthesis of novel lead chlorovanadate compound and of a known alkali metal trivanadate compound, KV3O8 by hydrothermal method This method has been used to synthesize many inorganic oxide compounds Hydrothermal synthesis is the use of aqueous solvents under high temperature and high pressure to dissolve and recrystallize materials. Compounds with interesting structure and physical properties are often obtained from this technique that is known as one of the low-temperature synthesis techniques for solid state compounds. There are many studies that have been done on oxides in the Pb-V-O systems There are also many vanadium oxides containing Pb, V, O elements in Pb-V-O system such as Pb1.32V8.35O16.7, PbV6O11, PbV2O6, Pb2V3O8.5, and .-PbxV2O5 bronzes (x = 0.3). In an attempt to synthesize vanadium oxides at low temperature, we were able to obtain needle shaped yellow crystals of PbVO3Cl. In the nature, there is a kombatite mineral, Pb14(VO4)2O9Cl4, with the same composition of elements. A new lead chlorovanadate, PbVO3Cl, was obtained from the reaction of NaVO3 and PbCl2 in aqueous solution of B(OH)3. The compound was prepared in an autoclave that was filled with aqueous solution of B(OH)3 and heated at 170oC for 3 days. The compound crystallizes in the space group Pnma of the orthorhombic system with formula units in a cell of dimensions a = 10.022(2)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A low energy band gap between Ce3+ and Ce4+ states in cerium oxide along with its high oxygen mobility and high oxygen storage capacity are properties that qualify it as one of the most widely used heterogeneous catalysts and catalyst oxide supports. This thesis report is an account of studies that were carried out on the synthesis and catalytic properties of pure, metal-doped and noble-metal impregnated cerium oxide nanoparticles. Our results revealed that synthesis temperature, during hydrothermal reactions, plays a critical role in controlling the shape, size, oxygen vacancy concentration, and low temperature reducibility in CeO2 nanoparticles. In addition, OH− ion concentration was found to play an important role in engineering the lattice constants and oxygen vacancy concentrations of ceria nanoparticles within the same particle morphology and synthesis temperature. Secondly, our studies demonstrated that hydrothermal synthesis is a facile one-step approach to the preparation of compositionally homogeneous Ce[subscript x]Zr[subscript 1-x]O2 (0≤x≤1) nanocrystals, in which CeO2-ZrO2 mixed oxides present a superior low-temperature oxygen release capability compared to pure CeO2. The Ce[subscript 0.5]Zr[subscript 0.5]O2 system proved to have good thermal stability up to 1000°C under reducing and oxidizing atmosphere. We have also seen that at above 1000°C, phase transformation occurs from psudocubic to cation ordered pyrochlore or tetragonal phase under reducing and oxidizing atmosphere, respectively. This method may be easily extended to other cerium-based mixed oxides or synthesis of analogous mixed oxides. Lastly, our results established that the impregnation of 1 wt. % platinum and gold on CeO2 nanorods and on nanocubes causes an enhanced reduction on their surface reduction temperatures with negligible effect on their bulk reducibility. It was also shown that both pure and impregnated CeO2 nanorods have a lower surface reduction temperature compared to that of pure and impregnated CeO2 nanocubes. We have also demonstrated that gold nanoparticles proved to have a higher catalytic performance in oxidizing molecular hydrogen at low temperatures as compared to platinum nanoparticles.
