Book excerpt: Excerpt from New National Fifth Reader With The publication of this book, our series of readers designed for the use of graded and ungraded schools, is completed. Concerning the simplicity and careful gradation of the letter-press, a word of explanation is necessary. It is evident, even to the casual observer, that pupils terminate their school life at a much earlier age now than over before. This is due, in part, to - 1. - Better methods of instruction, which advance pupils more rapidly toward the completion of their course of study. 2. - Afeverish desire on the part of the young to commence their life-work. 3. - The humble circumstances of many parents, who, consequently, need the assistance of their children in the every-day affairs of life, and take them from school by the time they have finished the third reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Fifth Reader: Containing a Treatise on Elocution, Exercises in Reading and Declamation, With Biographical Sketches, and Copious Notes; Adapted to the Use of Students in English and American Literature In Part Second, the Selections for Reading and Declamation contain what are regarded as the choicest gems of English lit erature. The works of many authors, ancient and modern, have been consulted, and more than a hundred standard writers of the English language, on both sides of the Atlantic, have been laid under contribution to enable the authors to present a collec tion, rich in all that can inform the understanding, improve the taste, and cultivate the heart, and which, at the same time, shall furnish every variety of style and subject to exemplify the prin ciples of Rhetorical delivery, and form a finished reader and elocutionist. These selections have been arranged in a regularly graded course, and strictly classified with regard to the nature of the subjects. Although we have not been studious of novelty, presenting only what we regarded as suitable, intrinsically excel lent, and most truly indicating the mode and range of thought of the writer, it will be seen that a large proportion of this col lection is composed of pieces to be found in no similar work. Much care and labor have been devoted to the orthoepical department. The pronunciation of all words liable to be mis pronounced is indicated once in each paragraph, or at the bottom of the page where they occur. With respect to the words about the pronunciation of which orthoepists difi'er, we have adopted the most recent and reliable authority. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both a historical recovery and a critical rethinking of the functions and practices of textbooks, Archives of Instruction: Nineteenth-Century Rhetorics, Readers, and Composition Books in the United States argues for an alternative understanding of our rhetorical traditions. The authors describe how the pervasive influence of nineteenth-century literacy textbooks demonstrate the early emergence of substantive instruction in reading and writing. Tracing the histories of widespread educational practices, the authors treat the textbooks as an important means of cultural formation that restores a sense of their distinguished and unique contributions. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, few people in the United States had access to significant school education or to the materials of instruction. By century’s end, education was a mass—though not universal—experience, and literacy textbooks were ubiquitous artifacts, used both in home and in school by a growing number of learners from diverse backgrounds. Many of the books have been forgotten, their contributions slighted or dismissed, or they are remembered through a haze of nostalgia as tokens of an idyllic form of schooling. Archives of Instruction suggests strategies for re-reading the texts and details the watersheds in the genre, providing a new perspective on the material conditions of schooling, book publication, and emerging practices of literacy instruction. The volume includes a substantial bibliography of primary and secondary works related to literacy instruction at all levels of education in the United States during the nineteenth century.
