Book excerpt: Chemistry and Biochemistry of Flavoenzymes summarizes the present knowledge of the chemical and physical properties of free flavin, modified flavins occurring in nature, and deazaflavin. This information forms the fundamental basis for understanding the catalytic properties of flavoenzymes. Flavoproteins involved in transport, electron transfer, oxidation, dehydrogenation and hydroxylation reactions are discussed with respect to their biochemical and biophysical properties. The book presents the catalytic mechanisms of the flavoproteins in detail and, where available, three-dimensional structures and molecular biology data are included. The medical aspects of free and protein-bound flavin are also briefly discussed. Chemistry and Biochemistry of Flavoenzymes is an essential reference source for chemists, biochemists, toxicologists, biologists, pharmacologists, and researchers in the pharmaceutical industry.
Book Synopsis Advances in the Development of Artificial Metalloenzymes by : Tatjana N. Parac-Vogt
Download or read book Advances in the Development of Artificial Metalloenzymes written by Tatjana N. Parac-Vogt and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reactions catalyzed by metalloenzymes have great potential for applications in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. While only a few of these enzymes have yet been used in such applications, in the last few decades numerous efficient, selective, environmentally friendly and economical synthetic analogues have been described, including supramolecular, polymeric, nanoparticulate and lowmolecular- weight organometallic complexes, and metal organic frameworks. In this Research Topic, we present a collection of original research and review articles that show significant recent advances made in the rational design of such artificial metalloenzymes.

Book Synopsis Transition Metals in Catalysis by : Silke Leimkühler
Download or read book Transition Metals in Catalysis written by Silke Leimkühler and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iron–sulfur (FeS) centers are essential protein cofactors in all forms of life. They are involved in many key biological processes. In particular, Fe-S centers not only serve as enzyme cofactors in catalysis and electron transfer, they are also indispensable for the biosynthesis of complex metal-containing cofactors. Among these cofactors are the molybdenum (Moco) and tungsten (Wco) cofactors. Both Moco/Wco biosynthesis and Fe-S cluster assembly are highly conserved among all kingdoms of life. After formation, Fe-S clusters are transferred to carrier proteins, which insert them into recipient apo-proteins. Moco/Wco cofactors are composed of a tricyclic pterin compound, with the metal coordinated to its unique dithiolene group. Moco/Wco biosynthesis starts with an Fe-S cluster-dependent step involving radical/S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) chemistry. The current lack of knowledge of the connection of the assembly/biosynthesis of complex metal-containing cofactors is due to the sheer complexity of their synthesis with regard to both the (genetic) regulation and (chemical) metal center assembly. Studies on these metal-cofactors/cofactor-containing enzymes are important for understanding fundamental cellular processes. They will also provide a comprehensive view of the complex biosynthesis and the catalytic mechanism of metalloenzymes that underlie metal-related human diseases.

Book Synopsis Electron Spin Resonance by : M C R Symons
Download or read book Electron Spin Resonance written by M C R Symons and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book Synopsis Molybdenum and Tungsten Enzymes by : Russ Hille
Download or read book Molybdenum and Tungsten Enzymes written by Russ Hille and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been enormous progress in our understanding of molybdenum and tungsten enzymes and relevant inorganic complexes of molybdenum and tungsten over the past twenty years. This set of three books provides a timely and comprehensive overview of the field and documents the latest research. Building on the first volume that focussed on biochemistry aspects, the second volume in the set focusses on the inorganic complexes that model the structures and reactivity of the active sites of each major group of molybdenum and tungsten enzymes. Special attention is given to synthetic strategies, reaction mechanism and chemical kinetics of these systems. The introductory chapter provides a useful overview and places the topic of the book into a wider context. This text will be a valuable reference to workers both inside and outside the field, including graduate students and young investigators interested in developing new research programs in this area.

Book excerpt: The Proteins, Volume III, Third Edition deals with the structure of proteins in terms of composition, amino acid sequence, and three-dimensional conformation. Special consideration is given to sulfur and the sulfur-containing amino acids because of their unique contribution to the structure and reactivity of certain proteins. The book reviews the strategies and procedures for determining the amino acid sequence of a protein. The "spinning-cup" sequenator method of Edman and Begg; the role of sulfur in proteins; and the three-dimensional structure of some crystalline proteins by X-ray diffraction analysis are covered as well. Protein chemists, medical and biological researchers, and students who require more knowledge of protein chemistry will find the book extremely useful.
