Book excerpt: The history of New Mexico is the story of three contrasting cultures-Indian, Spanish, and Anglo-American-clashing, coexisting, and blending. Here the Indians of Hawikuh-the first Zuñi pueblo encountered by Coronado's soldiers-gave battle to the Europeans in 1540. Here also Indians last took a stand against federal troops in 1913. A rich and colorful Spanish tradition, including institutions of family and church, social organizations, and the Spanish language, continues strong a century and a half after the acquisition of the territory by the United States. Anglo-Americans have also made their mark upon the land with public works, highways, and rapidly developing towns and cities. This history of New Mexico is intended for readers who want a brief, yet comprehensive treatment of the state's development. Warren A. Beck takes a balanced approach to all the themes in the state's varied history. He allows the whole story to emerge from the facts-in a concise and readable format. "Here is a book that every traveler in the state of New Mexico will want handy in his glove compartment, and every resident of the state who entertains visitors will want on his bookshelf. . . . It is loaded with information." Hispanic American Historical Review "A readable account of New Mexico history that hits the high spots of the past 400 years." New Mexico Magazine "Beck's book gives appropriate weight to each of five distinct divisions of the area's history-the Indian, the Spanish, the Mexican, the Territorial, and the Statehood periods. . . . The presentation is clear, pointed, and the story is carried through with the minimum of digression." Journal of the West Warren A. Beck (1918-91) was Professor of History at California State University, Fullerton. He is the co-author, with Ynez D. Haase, of Historical Atlas of New Mexico, Historical Atlas of California, and Historical Atlas of the West.

This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, Mexican American journalists used their presses to voice socio-historical concerns and to represent themselves as a determinant group of communities in Nuevo MŽxico, a particularly resilient corner of the Chicano homeland. This book draws on exhaustive archival research to review the history of newspapers in these communities from the arrival of the first press in the region to publication of the last edition of Santa FeÕs El Nuevo Mexicano. Gabriel MelŽndez details the education and formation of a generation of Spanish-language journalists who were instrumental in creating a culture of print in nativo communities. He then offers in-depth cultural and literary analyses of the texts produced by los periodiqueros, establishing them thematically as precursors of the Chicano literary and political movements of the 1960s and Õ70s. Moving beyond a simple effort to reinscribe Nuevomexicanos into history, MelŽndez views these newspapers as cultural productions and the work of the editors as an organized movement against cultural erasure amid the massive influx of easterners to the Southwest. Readers will find a wealth of information in this book. But more important, they will come away with the sense that the survival of Nuevomexicanos as a culturally and politically viable group is owed to the labor of this brilliant generation of newspapermen who also were statesmen, scholars, and creative writers.

Book excerpt: Rio Arriba: A New Mexico County Rio arriba. In Spanish, the lower case rio arriba stands for the "upper river," that portion of northern New Mexico that straddles the Rio del Norte, the historic name of the Rio Grande. In the upper case, they stand for Rio Arriba County, a geopolitical entity that constitutes a small portion of the historic rio arriba. The words define a vast portion of New Mexico that extends from the historic villa of Santa Fe north into the San Luis Valley of today's southern Colorado. Former New Mexico State Historian Robert J. Torrez, Robert Trapp, long-time owner and publisher of Espanola's Rio Grande Sun, and eight additional authors have come together to examine the long and complex history of this rio arriba. Rio Arriba: A New Mexico County reviews the history of this fascinating and unique area. The authors provide us an overview of its primordial beginnings (that left us the fossilized remains of coelophysis, our official state fossil), introduce us to the Tewa peoples that established the county's first permanent settlements, as discuss the role the Navajo, Ute, and Jicarilla Apache played in the region's history. As the history unfolds, the reader learns about the Spanish conquistadores and later-arriving Americans, their often contentious relations with the Native American peoples, and how the communities they established and the institutions they brought with them helped shape the Rio Arriba County of today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Mexico Historical Review, 1946, Vol. 21 For approximately a century the Navaho have been struggling for possession of their traditional homeland against the intruding white man. Their biggest victory came when they were allowed to'return to northwestern New Mexico and adjacent Arizona in 1868 from their im prisonment near Fort Sumner, in the Pecos valley. A minor, but important triumph, was won in the 1880's when they regained ownership of a strip of land on the south side of the San Juan river near Farmington and Bloomfield.
