The discovery of new transition metal-based catalysts is one of the driving forces for the further advancement of this field. Whereas the classical heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalysts and homogeneous early transition metal metallocene catalysts remain the workhorses of the polyolefin industry, in roughly the last decade, tremendous progress has been made in developing non-metallocene-based olefin polymerization catalysts. Particularly, the discovery of late transition metal-based olefin polymerization catalysts heralds a new era for this field. These late transition metal complexes not only exhibit high activities rivaling their early metal counterparts, but more importantly they offer unique properties for polymer architectural control and copolymerization with polar olefins. In this book, the most recent major breakthroughs in the development of new olefin polymerization catalysts, including early metal metallocene and non-metallocene complexes and late transition metal complexes, are discussed by leading experts. The authors highlight the most important discoveries in catalysts and their applications in designing new polyolefin-based functional materials.

Book excerpt: More than 30 years after the discovery of transition metals and organometal lics as catalysts for olefin polymerization these catalysts did not have lost their fascination. Since 1953 when Karl Ziegler has discovered the catalytic polymerization of ethylene leading to plastically formable polymers which are mechanically stable up to temperatures of about 100°C, synthetic polymers and rubbers have made their way right into private houses. This discovery has been a main impetus for the fast growing production of plastics. The stereoselective poly merization of propylene and other long-chain a-olefins first detected by Giulio Natta leads to an even broadened field of applications. Another enforcing factor were the developments of Standard Oil of Indiana and Phillipps Petroleum Company who engaged in the polymerization of a-olefins supported molybdenum, cobalt and later on chromium catalysts which clearly indicates the wide variety of suitable systems. This kind of research acknowledged merit when in 1963 the Nobel prize of chemistry was awarded to Ziegler and Natta. Although to a great extent there is a technical application for these catalysts, up to now the nature of the active centres and many reaction mechanisms are not completely known.

Book excerpt: 45 years after the discovery of transition metals and organometallics as cocatalysts for the polymerization of olefins and for organic synthesis, these compounds have not lost their fascination. The birthday of Karl Ziegler, the great pioneer in this metalorganic catalysis, is now 100 years ago. Polyolefins and polydienes produced by Ziegler-Natta catalysis are the most important plastics and elastomers. New impulses for the polymerization of olefins have been brought about by highly active metallocenes and other single site catalysts. Just by changing the ligands of the organometallic compounds, the structure of the polymers produced can be tailored in a wide manner. In invited lectures and posters, relevant aspects of the metalorganic catalysts for synthesis and polymerization are discussed in this book. This includes mechanism and kinetics, stereochemistry, material properties, and industrial applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the 1960s, the coordinative polymerization of conjugated dienes has continuously improved. Today, chemists know how to polymerize conjugated dienes stereospecifically and in a controlled fashion, both petro-sourced (nowadays also bio-sourced) and those of natural origin. The industry has greatly improved the performances of the catalytic systems—covering a wide range of elements including metals from groups 4–6 and 8–10, and rare earths—with the aim of optimizing the preparation of synthetic polymers for a large range of industrial applications. Nowadays, there is a better understanding of the polymerization mechanism involving allyl-active species, thanks in particular to the support of more efficient calculation methods. In addition, statistical copolymerization of 1,3-dienes with olefin or styrene comonomers and innovative approaches to coordinative chain transfer polymerization allow the production of copolymers with controlled topology, while a last challenge is about to be solved with the preparation of stereoregular polydienes that are also end-functionalized. This issue brings together several important aspects of this chemistry that remain at the forefront of both academic and industrial research.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled GROUP 4 COMPLEXES BEARING TRIDENTATE ARYLOXIDE- BASED ANCILLARY LIGANDS: SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND APPLICATION AS OLEFIN POLYMERIZATION CATALYSTS Submitted by Tam Ka Ho for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in 2006 The preparation, characterization, crystal structures and olefin polymerization behavior of a class of Group 4 complexes, and in particular the Zr(IV) derivatives 1 1 [Zr(L )Cl (D)] [H L = 2,6-di(3-tert-butyl-5-methylphen-2-ol)pyridine; D = ethers, 2 2 ketones and Cl(HPR )], have been undertaken. These [O, N, O] catalysts exhibit excellent activities with MAO for ethylene polymerization. Studies to assess the impact of the donor group during catalysis suggest that the same active species is generated and the donor does not play an active role. Superior activities were observed with the Bu Al/Ph CB(C F ) cocatalyst in ethylene polymerization and - 3 3 6 5 4 -1 -1 propylene copolymerization (36,590 and 15,700 g mmol h respectively). Insight into the behavior of the catalytic system with MAO has been derived from gel permeation chromatography and NMR analyses of the polymers prepared under 1 13 different reaction conditions. H and C NMR end-group analyses reveal resonances for saturated methyl chain-end groups only, and undetectable levels of unsaturated vinyl chain ends. This indicates that for the polymerization chain-transfer mechanism, the conventional β-H transfer reactions are insignificant and the unusual chain transfer to Al pathway is vastly dominant. Group 4 complexes supported by unsymmetric tridentate [O, N, O] ligands bearing different substituents on the two aryloxide rings have been prepared, in order to develop new catalytic systems capable of stereospecific α-olefin polymerization. Their activities for ethylene polymerization with MAO are significantly lower than the symmetric [O, N, O] analogues. A number of group 4 bis(benzyl) complexes supported by tridentate pyridine-2- phenolate-6-aryl [O, N, C] ligands, with alkyl and halogen substituents at the R position ortho to the metal, have been prepared. This enabled direct comparison with the CF -substituted [O, N, C] analogues, which were recently reported to exhibit novel C-H---F-C contacts in solution with potential applications for attractive ligand---polymer interactions. The molecular structure of the Zr derivative bearing an ortho-Cl group was determined, revealing the benzyl moieties in an unusual 'anti, anti' configuration. Saliently, this polyethylene catalyst in conjunction with Bu Al/Ph CB(C F ) displayed the best activity thus far observed for [O, N, C] 3 3 6 5 4 -1 -1 catalysts (8630 g mmol h ). A series of group 4 bis(benzyl) complexes supported by newly designed [O, C, N] ligands bearing R substituents ortho to the metal has been prepared, such that the σ- aryl moiety resides trans to the alkyl/polymer chain, and catalyst decomposition pathways such as olefin insertion into the M-C(sp ) bond are impeded. The crystal structure of the CF -substituted hafnium(IV) complex features weak intramolecular 31 C-H---F-C (CF ---methylene) interactions. The H NMR spectra of [M(O, C, N- CF )(CH Ph) ] analogues revealed coupling (assigned to J [via M---F] for Hf and

Book excerpt: This book describes the synthesis and characterization of niobium-based metal complexes and their usefulness as catalysts for the polymerization of ethylene, norbornene, beta pinene and vinyl monomers. The polymerization of above described monomers was studied using niobium complexes based on N, N dialkylcarbamates, mixed chloro alkoxides, simple oxygen-containing ligands and the starting material for the preparation of such derivatives, i.e. NbCl5.Niobium N, N-dialkylcarbamates exhibited high activity for polymerization of ethylene when activated with TMA-depleted MAO and 1,2-dichloroethane as activator working at 1 bar ethylene pressure. These novel catalytic systems resulted very active in Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornene (NBE)with the highest activity never reported up to now for any transition metal catalysts. The dinuclear niobium compounds and simple oxygen-containing derivatives of niobium pentachloride were tested for ethylene polymerization and produced satisfactory results. In this context, it was found that easily accessible NbCl5 works as an excellent catalyst for the polymerization of β-pinene styrene and butylvinyl ethers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 30 years, the field of alkene polymerization over transition metal catalysts underwent several major changes:1. The list of commercial heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalysts for the synthesis of polyethylene and stereoregular polyolefins was completely renewed affording an unprecedented degree of control over the polymer structure.2. Research devoted to metallocene and other soluble transition-metal catalysis has vastly expanded and has shifted toward complexes of transition metals with multidentate ligands.3. Recent developments in gel permeation chromatography, temperature-rising fractionation, and crystallization fractionation provided the first reliable information about differences between various active centers in transition-metal catalysts.4. A rapid development of high-resolution 13C NMR spectroscopy resulted in greatly expanded understanding of the chemical and steric features of polyolefins and alkene copolymers. These developments require a new review of all aspects of alkene polymerization reactions with transition-metal catalysts. The first chapter in the book is an introductory text for researchers who are entering the field. It describes the basic principles of polymerization reactions with transition-metal catalysts, the types of catalysts, and commercially manufactured polyolefins. The next chapter addresses the principal issue of alkene polymerization catalysis: the existence of catalyst systems with single and multiple types of active centers. The subsequent chapters are devoted to chemistry and stereochemistry of elemental reaction steps, structures of catalyst precursors and reactions leading to the formation of active centers, kinetics of polymerization reactions, and their mechanisms. The book describes the latest commercial polymerization catalysts for the synthesis of polyethylenes and polypropylene The book provides a detailed description of the multi-center nature of commercial Ziegler-Natta catalysts. The book devotes specialized chapters to the most important aspects of transition metal polymerization catalysts: the reactions leading to the formation of active centers, the chemistry and stereochemistry of elemental polymerization steps, reaction kinetics, and the polymerization mechanism. The book contains an introductory chapter for researchers who are entering the field of polymerization catalysis. It describes the basic principles of polymerization reactions with transition-metal catalysts and the types of commercially manufactured polyolefins and copolymersThe book contains over 2000 references, the most recent up to end of 2006.

Book excerpt: The field of olefin polymerization has been remarkably renewed with the use of metallocene and post metallocene catalyst. Novel transition-metal complexes were studied as catalysts in ethylene polymerization. The aim of this work is to investigate the feasibility of replacing the cyclopentadienyl ligands of metallocenes by bis(aminotropone) ligands as well as by new bis(imino)pyridinato ligands without losing the good properties of the metallocenes, such as high activity and formation of linear polymer. It was presumed that the polymerization mechanism and the active center in ethylene polymerization would be similar for iminopyridinato and metallocene catalysts. Titanium (IV) and nickel (II) catalysts based on bis(anilinotropone) ligands were prepared and their structures determined to clarify the relationship between structure of the catalyst precursor and polymerization results. In experimentation, the syntheses, structures and olefin polymerization behavior of Ti complexes containing a pair of chelating aminotropone [O-N] ligands are reported. DFT studies revealed that bis(aminotropone) Ti complexes, when activated, provide a metal alkyl in the cis position to a vacant coordina

Book excerpt: In this thesis we present the synthesis and characterization of differenttypes of ruthenium complexes containing N-donor ligands together withmonodentate ligands, along with their complete characterization throughspectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. The complexes have beenevaluated as catalysts for olefin epoxidation and nitrile hydration in2/1homogeneous phase. On the other hand, taking into account the importance andadvantages of the heterogeneous catalysis, we have carried out theimmobilization of some of these complexes on silica-type supports andmagnetic nanoparticles and we have evaluated their catalytic activity, comparing them with the analogous homogeneous systems, and have been reusedfor several runs maintaining high values of selectivity for the epoxide. Someof the complexes together with other complexes previously synthesized in ourresearch group, have been tested as antitumoral agents.
