Book excerpt: We present a new approach to measuring the neutrino-spin correlation parameter B in neutron decay. The approach combines the technology of large-area ion-implanted silicon detectors being developed for the abBA experiment, with an ultracold neutron source to provide more precise neutron polarimetry. The technique detects both proton and electron from the neutron decay in coincidence. B is determined from an electron-energy-dependent measurement of the proton spin asymmetry. This approach will provide a statistical precision of 1 x 10-4 . The systematic precision is still being evaluated, but is expected to be below 1 x 10-3, and could approach 1 x 10-4 . A measurement of B with this precision would place constraints on supersymmetric extensions to the Standard Model.

Book excerpt: The free neutron beta decay correlation A0 between neutron polarization and electron emission direction provides the strongest constraint on the ratio [lambda] = g[sub-A]/g[sub-V] of the Axial-vector to Vector coupling constants in Weak decay. In conjunction with the CKM Matrix element V[sub-ud] and the neutron lifetime [tau sub-n], [lambda] provides a test of Standard Model assumptions for the Weak interaction. Leading high-precision measurements of A0 and [tau sub-n] in the 1995-2005 time period showed discrepancies with prior measurements and Standard Model predictions for the relationship between [lambda], [tau sub-n], and V[sub-ud]. The UCNA experiment was developed to measure A0 from decay of polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN), providing a complementary determination of [lambda] with different systematic uncertainties from prior cold neutron beam experiments. This dissertation describes analysis of the dataset collected by UCNA in 2010, with emphasis on detector response calibrations and systematics. The UCNA measurement is placed in the context of the most recent [tau sub-n] results and cold neutron A0 experiments.

Book excerpt: The current data for the nucleon-virtual photon longitudinal spin asymmetry A1 on the proton and neutron have shown that the ratio of the polarized-to-unpolarized down-quarkparton distribution functions, Dd=d, tends towards -1/2 at large x, in disagreement with the perturbative QCD prediction that Dd/d approaches 1 but more in line with constituent quark models. As a part of experiment E06-014 in Hall A of Jefferson Lab, double-spin asymmetries were measured in the scattering of a longitudinally polarized electron beam of energies 4.74 and 5.89 GeV from a longitudinally and transversely polarized 3He target in the deep inelastic scattering and resonance region, allowing for the extraction of the neutron asymmetry An1 and the ratios Dd/d and Du/u. We will discuss our analysis of the data and present results for A1 and g1/F1 on both 3He and the neutron, and the resulting quark ratios for the up and down quarks in the kinematic range of 0.2.

We will discuss our analysis of the data and present results for A1 and g1/F1 on both 3He and the neutron, and the resulting quark ratios for the up and down quarks in the kinematic range of 0.2 2 2 for our deep inelastic scattering data. Invoking duality, we also extract A1n and g1n/F1n in the resonance region, characterized by 0.6 2 2. Our measurements are compared to the world data and various theoretical models and more recent predictions using the Dyson-Schwinger Equation approach. We also present analysis of the unpolarized cross section data, which contributes to the g1 spin structure function and eventually the a2 matrix element, an x2-weighted moment of g1. The extracted a2 data are compared to a Lattice QCD calculation.

Book excerpt: The quest to understand how the nucleon spin is decomposed into its constituent quark and gluon spin and orbital angular momentum (OAM) components has been at the forefront of nuclear physics for decades. Due to the non-perturbative nature of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) - the theory describing how quarks and gluons bind together to form protons and neutrons - making absolute predictions of nucleon spin structure is generally difficult, especially as a function of its quark and gluon longitudinal momentum fraction x. Measurements involving nucleon spin structure serve as a sensitive test for QCD, including ab-initio lattice QCD calculations due to the advent of the quasi-PDF formalism, and various predictions that diverge at large-x. The neutron spin asymmetry A1n at high-x is a key observable for probing nucleon spin structure. In the valence domain (x > 0.5), sea effects are expected to be negligible, and so the total nucleon spin is considered to be carried by the valence quarks. The valence region can therefore enable us to study the role of quark OAM and other non-perturbative effects of the strong force. A1^n was measured in the deep inelastic scattering region of 0.40

The scientific issues include elucidating the nature of time reversal noninvariance; understanding the origin of the baryon asymmetry in the Universe; describing the weak interaction between quarks and between nucleons; understanding the origin of the elements in stellar and big bang nucleosynthesis. This book summarizes how spallation neutron sources work and discuss the advantages of pulsed beams in reducing systematic errors in precision measurements. It also describes recent breakthroughs in ultracold neutron production, together with the physics that will be addressed by the new generation of intense neutron sources.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internal spin structure of the neutron, was studied in deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized [sup 3]He target in the End Station A of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The spin asymmetry of the neutron was measured at energies between 19 and 26 GeV in the range 0.03 [le] x [le] 0.06 at an average Q[sup 2] of 2 (GeV/c)[sup 2]. The results are in agreement with a new measurement of the asymmetry by SMC within their six times larger uncertainties. The spin dependent structure function g[sub 1](x) for the neutron was determined from the asymmetry measurement and, its integral over x is found to be [integral]g[sub 1][sup n](x)dx = -0.038 [+-] 0.009. This result is 2.7 standard deviations from the Ellis-Jaffe Sum Rule and combined with the EMC results from the proton in very good agreement with the Bjorken Sum Rule. In the Quark Parton Model (QPM), in conjunction with the weak coupling constants F and D, from baryon decay, the result implies that the quarks contribute approximately 32% of the nucleon helicity. Finally, different ways of evolving the data, based on various theoretical models, is attempted and future aspects for spin physics, with emphasis at spin physics at SLAC, are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spin structure of protons and neutrons has been an open question for nearly twenty-five years, after surprising experimental results disproved the simple model in which valence quarks were responsible for nearly 100% of the nucleon spin. Diverse theoretical approaches have been brought to bear on the problem, but a shortage of precise data - especially on neutron spin structure - has prevented a thorough understanding. Experiment E06-014, conducted in Hall A of Jefferson Laboratory in 2009, presented an opportunity to add to the world data set for the neutron in the poorly covered valence-quark region. Jefferson Laboratory's highly polarized electron beam, combined with Hall A's facilities for a high-density, highly polarized 3He target, allowed a high-luminosity double-polarized experiment, while the large acceptance of the BigBite spectrometer gave coverage over a wide kinematic range: 0.15

Book excerpt: Precision measurements in free neutron beta decay serve to determine the coupling constants of beta decay, and offer several stringent tests of the standard model. This study describes the free neutron beta decay program planned for the Fundamental Physics Beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and finally puts it into the context of other recent and planned measurements of neutron beta decay observables.
