Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Hebrew Scriptures, far from being merely a prelude leading up to the New Testament, are replete with theological values that can illumine the Christian life today. The author explicates this thesis by demonstrating how these values are underscored in Old Testament stories. He groups the representative samples of these stories in six chapters: Beginning, Moses and the Exodus, Brothers, Heroes, Kings, and Prophets. Each chapter shows how these "old" stories shed light on the values, concerns, challenges, and ideals of Christians today. Parish Bible studies, college and seminary courses on Old Testament and on preaching, and anyone who wishes to learn more about how Scripture can enrich their lives will benefit from this book."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: #1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown has long inspired readers to believe that life is full of wonderful possibilities. Here is one of her classic novels, an exquisite tale of longtime friends who have seen it all—and suddenly see each other in a whole new light. Ever since losing her husband, Cyn McCall has counted on his business partner, Worth Lansing. Though a confirmed bachelor, Worth nonetheless proves himself to be a dependable friend and a father figure to her son. He makes her laugh, and she teases him about his many romantic entanglements. But falling for a man who can’t settle down is the furthest thing from her mind—until an innocent gesture changes everything. When Worth invites Cyn to a getaway weekend in Acapulco, he doesn’t expect to be sharing a room. And he certainly doesn’t intend for them to wind up in bed together. Cyn wants to believe that their night of passion was a mistake sparked by the exotic locale. But Worth is convinced that they share something deeper. He knows he’s finally ready to stop playing games—if only Cyn will open her heart to the promise of love.

Book excerpt: “How-to instructions on crafting with books . . . will inspire you to think about creative ways to make new treasures out of old things” (The Virginian-Pilot). We all love to read and learn from books, but The Repurposed Library takes our passion even further, presenting us with thirty-three projects to make—quite literally—out of books. For these projects, Lisa Occhipinti rescues and repurposes orphaned and outdated books from flea markets and library sales and turns them into new art objects and practical items for the home. Her creations range from artfully constructed mobiles, wreaths, and vases, to functional items like shelves, storage boxes, and even a Kindle “keeper” for those who want to replicate the sensation of holding a “real” book while reading from an e-reader. Projects utilize every imaginable part of a book—from hardback cover to individual pages—and are a DIY celebration of a new way to view a book’s potential. “Occhipinti’s ‘repurposed’ books are truly beautiful art objects, and whether or not you’re crafty enough to give them a try yourself, her book is thoroughly enjoyable.” —Fine Books and Collections “She shows readers how to transform books into mobiles, lamp shades, even clocks.” —National Post

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective volume arises from a Wellcome-funded conference held at the University of Warwick in 2014 about the “new” Galen discovered in 2005 in a Greek manuscript, De indolentia. In the wake of the latest English translation published by Vivian Nutton in 2013, this book offers a multi-disciplinary approach to the new text, discussing in turn issues around Galen’s literary production, his medical and philosophical contribution to the theme of avoiding distress (ἀλυπία), controversial topics in Roman history such as the Antonine plague and the reign of Commodus, and finally the reception of the text in the Islamic world. Gathering eleven contributions by recognised specialists of Galen, Greek literature and Roman history, it revisits the new text extensively.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • “A gripping and poignant ode to a messy, loving family in all its glory.” —Madeline Miller, bestselling author of Circe In this “rich, complex family saga” (USA Today) full of long-buried family secrets, Marilyn Connolly and David Sorenson fall in love in the 1970s, blithely ignorant of all that awaits them. By 2016, they have four radically different daughters, each in a state of unrest. Wendy, widowed young, soothes herself with booze and younger men; Violet, a litigator turned stay-at-home-mom, battles anxiety and self-doubt; Liza, a neurotic and newly tenured professor, finds herself pregnant with a baby she's not sure she wants by a man she's not sure she loves; and Grace, the dawdling youngest daughter, begins living a lie that no one in her family even suspects. With the unexpected arrival of young Jonah Bendt—a child placed for adoption by one of the daughters fifteen years before—the Sorensons will be forced to reckon with the rich and varied tapestry of their past. As they grapple with years marred by adolescent angst, infidelity, and resentment, they also find the transcendent moments of joy that make everything else worthwhile.

Book excerpt: Shifting Stories explores the tale literature of eighth- and ninth-century China to show how the written tales we have today grew out of a fluid culture of hearsay that circulated within elite society. Sarah M. Allen focuses on two main types of tales, those based in gossip about recognizable public figures and those developed out of lore concerning the occult. She demonstrates how writers borrowed and adapted stories and plots already in circulation and how they transformed them—in some instances into unique and artfully wrought tales. For most readers of that era, tales remained open texts, subject to revision by many hands over the course of transmission, unconstrained by considerations of textual integrity or authorship. Only in the mid- to late-ninth century did some readers and editors come to see the particular wording and authorship of a tale as important, a shift that ultimately led to the formation of the Tang tale canon as it is envisioned today.
