This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New developments in the response spectrum method have led to calculations in seismic stresses that are more accurate, and usually lower, than those obtained by conventional methods. This new textbook examines the wealth of information on the response spectrum method generated by the latest research and presents the background theory in simplified form. Applications of these methods is essential in the seismic design of critical structures, such as nuclear power plants and petroleum facilities. In new construction, the reduced seismic stresses will result in efficient and economic design. For facilities already built, these more accurate methods can be used where the facility is being reassessed for higher loads and in the calculation of margins. Written by an acknowledged expert in this and related fields, this volume is ideal as a graduate text for courses in structural and earthquake engineering. It is also an excellent reference for civil, structural, mechanical, and earthquake engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic Performance of Soil-Foundation-Structure Systems presents invited papers presented at the international workshop (University of Auckland, New Zealand, 21-22 November 2016). This international workshop brought together outstanding work in earthquake engineering that embraces a holistic consideration of soilfoundation-structure systems. For example, the diversity of papers in this volume is represented by contributions from the fields of shallow foundation in liquefiable soil, spatially distributed lifelines, bridges, clustered structures (see photo on front cover), sea floor seismic motion, multi-axial ground excitation, deep foundations, soil-foundation-structurefluid interaction, liquefaction-induced settlement and uplift with SFSI. A fundamental knowledge gap is manifested by the isolated manner geotechnical and structural engineers work. A holistic consideration of soil-foundation-structures systems is only possible if civil engineers work collaboratively to the mutual benefit of all disciplines. Another gap occurs by the retarded application of up-to-date research findings in engineering design practices. Seismic Performance of Soil-Foundation-Structure Systems is the outcome from the recognized need to close this gap, since it has been observed that a considerable delay exists between published research findings and application of the principles revealed by the research. Seismic Performance of Soil-Foundation-Structure Systems will be helpful in developing more understanding of the complex nature of responses these systems present under strong earthquakes, and will assist engineers in closing the gaps identified above.

Book excerpt: From the preface: This volume is a collection of papers presented at the U.S. - Japan Joint Seminar on Stochastic Approaches in Earthquake Engineering held on May 6 and 7, 1987. The general theme of the two-day program was the application of probability and statistics to engineering problems related to strong ground motion. Within this general theme a great variety of subject matters were covered, including earthquake cataloging, ground motion modeling, system identification, failure mechanisms, response and reliability analyses, numerical techniques, and active control. The engineering systems considered included buildings, bridges and life-line networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic qualification of secondary systems such as piping is performed using the response spectrum method. Structural responses evaluated using response spectrum method are used for checking the design equations specified by the ASME Section III Boiler and Pressure Vessel (ASME BPV) Code. This dissertation addresses the topics of combining modal responses in response spectrum method and the reliability associated with the ASME design equations. In the method for combining modal responses, the validity of the existing expressions for rigid response coefficient is evaluated for the case of floor motions which represents earthquake input to the secondary systems. A closed-form formulation is proposed for the rigid response coefficient and is verified using time history analysis for both the cases of ground and floor motions. The closed-form expression is then extended to response spectrum method by developing a simplified procedure for evaluating relative Fourier amplitudes of few significant pulses from the floor response spectrum. In the reliability-based design of piping systems using ASME BPV code design equations, performance functions are formulated to characterize the different failure modes in a straight pipe segment. These performance functions are then used to determine the implicit reliability levels associated with the design equations in ASME-BPV code. This calibration of the existing design equations is intended to provide an input for future studies related to the development of Load and Resistance Factor (LRFD) design equations which require an estimate of implicit reliability levels in existing equations in order to establish the target reliabilities.

Book excerpt: The Jan. 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake was one of the worst disasters to hit Japan in almost half a century. It has been compared in its impact to the great Kanto (Tokyo) Earthquake of 1923. The Kobe-Osaka region held many similarities in its geologic and tectonic setting to many areas along the West Coast, and possibly, other areas of the U.S. A geotechnical reconnaissance to identify the relevant problems and issues was organized. This report provides a timely, first-hand overview of the type and extent of the geotechnical aspects of the damage.
