Book excerpt: This paper investigates whether the type of technological regime moderates the effects of entry timing, entry size (i.e., initial resources), and active (post-entry) learning on firm survival. By analyzing a unique dataset of newly founded Korean manufacturing firms, we find that the effects of the factors influencing firm survival differ substantially across technological regimes. Specifically, entry size has the greatest positive effect on firm survival under the regime characterized by low technological opportunity and high R&D appropriability, under which opportunities for disruptive innovation are stagnant and the advantages of initial resources are more likely to persist. Post-entry active leaning through R&D, on the contrary, has the greatest effect on firm survival under the regime of high technological opportunity and low R&D appropriability, under which active learning through contemporaneous R&D effort is more crucial for firm survival than initial resource advantages mostly due to the possibility of creative destruction.

We model firm survival and examine the relative influence of firm, industry and macroeconomic factors on survival for new vis-à-vis incumbent firms. In particular, we focus on how the intensity of innovation in each industry affects firm survival. Our results imply that while new firms, compared with incumbent firms, thrive in risky and innovative industries, they are also more susceptible to business cycle effects such as changes in the rate of growth of aggregate demand, interest rates and the availability of equity finance.

However, many existing studies consistently find a negative association between innovative activity and firm death. We argue that this may occur because authors fail to distinguish between innovation investments and innovation capital. Using an unbalanced panel of over 290,000 Australian companies, we estimate a piecewise-constant exponential hazard rate model to examine the relationship between innovation and survival and find that current innovation investments increase the probability of death while innovation capital lowers it.

Book excerpt: This paper garners information crucial to understanding business growth for new entrants and small businesses who contract with the federal government by utilizing publicly available contracting data from the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS) to track new entrants from 2001-2016. This information is then used to evaluate entrances, exits, and status changes among federal vendors with the purpose of comparing challenges faced by small businesses with those of larger ones. Measuring market trends over time and in multiple sectors shows how the challenges facing small businesses, such as market barriers to entry and imperfect competition, keep them from growing. The final results compare the survival rates between small and non-small new entrants contracting with the federal government and analyze the graduation rates for those small new entrants who grew in size during the observation period and survived after ten years. The study finds that around 40 percent of new entrants exit the market for federal contracts after three years, around 50-60 percent after five years, and only about one-fifth of new entrants remain in the federal contracting arena in the final year of observation. Across the six samples studied, thegraduation rates of small businesses consistently decrease.
