Book excerpt: We present new evidence for events with a rapidity gap between jets in {bar p}-p collisions at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV based on data collected by triggering the Collider Detector at Fermilab on two high transverse momentum forward jets and results of a search for diffractive W" and dijet production where diffraction is tagged by the rapidity gap technique. We also present the results of a search for diffractive dijets using data collected by triggering on a very forward particle in the recently installed roman-pot detectors. The dijet events exhibit additional diffractive characteristics such as rapidity gaps and boosted center of mass system, however the recoil antiproton measured in the roman-pots is in a regime in which the non- pomeron contribution is significant.

Book excerpt: We present the[eta] and E[sub T] dependence of dijet events produced by color-singlet exchange in[anti p]p collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV using data collected by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron. In a sample of events with two forward jets, where the jets are on opposite sides in rapidity with[vert-bar][eta][vert-bar]> 1. 8 and E[sub T]> 20 GeV, we find 1.13[+-] 0.12(stat)[+-] 0. 11(syst)% have a rapidity gap between the jets consistent with color- singlet exchange. This signal has no significant dependence on the jet E[sub T] or the rapidity interval between the jets.

Book excerpt: We have studied events with a high-x{sub F} antiproton and two central jets in CDF, with p{anti p} collisions at √s = 630 and 1800 GeV. These events are expected to be dominated by diffraction (pomeron exchange). The jet E{sub T} spectra are very similar to those of non-diffractively produced jets but slightly steeper; their azimuthal difference [Delta][phi] is more peaked at 180°.

Book excerpt: Preliminary results from the D0 experiment on jet production with rapidity gaps in p{bar p} collisions are presented. A class of dijet events with a forward rapidity gap is observed at center-of-mass energies (square root)s = 1800 GeV and 630 GeV. The number of events with rapidity gaps at both center-of-mass energies is significantly greater than the expectation from multiplicity fluctuations and is consistent with a hard single diffractive process. A class of events with two forward gaps and central dijets is also observed at 1800 GeV. This topology is consistent with hard double pomeron exchange. We also present results on the observation of a class of events with low particle multiplicity between jets, attributable to the exchange of a strongly-interacting color-singlet.

Book excerpt: Preliminary results on jet production with rapidity gaps in p{anti p} collisions are presented for both D0 and CDF. An excess of events with a forward rapidity gap is observed at both (square root)s=1800 GeV and 630 GeV, consistent with a hard single diffractive process. The first evidence for diffractive W production is presented. A class of events with two forward gaps and central dijets is observed at (square root)s=1800 GeV, a topology that is consistent with hard double pomeron exchange. Kinematic properties of events containing rapidity gaps are measured.

Book excerpt: Recently there has been much interest in studying events with tagged forward protons at the existing and forthcoming hadronic colliders, the Tevatron and the LHC. These studies not only allow one to monitor the luminosity of the colliding protons with high accuracy but also provide new ways of investigating the subtle issues of QCD dynamics and searches for the manifestations of new physics. This book reviews the state of the art of forward physics measurements and the theoretical development. It will catalyze many new approaches within the framework of the extensive physics programme of the LHC. This in turn will stimulate closer contact between the LHC experiments as well as between the experimentalists and the theorists to maximize the potenntial of LHC physics.

Book excerpt: Using the CDF detector, dijet and W production with rapidity gaps has been searched for as evidence for hard-pomeron induced diffraction. Diffractive W's are sensitive to a pomeron with a hard-quark structure, while diffractive dijets are sensitive to both hard-gluon and hard-quark structure. No evidence of diffractive W's has been found down to the few percent level and the fraction of diffractive dijets is measured to be ( -0.03 " 0.37)%, or consistent with zero. The existence of colorless exchange between jets has been confirmed. Both the DO and CDF detectors show a statistically significant excess of dijet events with rapidity gaps between the jets at the level of 1-2% of all dijets.

Book excerpt: A 6.8 nb-1 sample of pp collision data collected under low-luminosity conditions at √s = 7 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to study diffractive dijet production. Events containing at least two jets with pT > 20 GeV are selected and analysed in terms of variables which discriminate between diffractive and non-diffractive processes. Cross sections are measured differentially in ??F, the size of the observable forward region of pseudorapidity which is devoid of hadronic activity, and in an estimator, ????????, of the fractional momentum loss of the proton assuming single diffractive dissociation (pp → pX). Model comparisons indicate a dominant non-diffractive contribution up to moderately large ??F and small ????????, with a diffractive contribution which is significant at the highest ??F and the lowest ????????. As a result, the rapidity-gap survival probability is estimated from comparisons of the data in this latter region with predictions based on diffractive parton distribution functions.
