Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Elements of Operative Surgery, Vol. 3 of 3: Carefully Revised, Entirely Remodelled, and Augmented With a Treatise on Minor Surgery While touching on this matter, we may remark, that in a case of this kind, and as an auxiliary to the screw-lever of Dr. Mott, the right masseter muscle was totally divided, and the left partially so, as early as the year 1840, by James R. Wood, M. D. Of this city. Complete success, however, did not reward the bold expedient of this skilful young surgeon, which, however, might possibly have been obtained if it had occurred to him to have adopted the ingenious te source of his preceptor, Dr. Mott, by severing also the pterygoid muscles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Surgery, Vol. 1 of 3: General Surgery The object of this work is to give a succinct account of modern surgical pathology, diagnosis, and treatment, and it is intended as a manual for practitioners and students. Much of merely historical interest has been purposely omitted, partly on account of want of space, and partly because a repetition of what is already in print, but now out of date, is undesirable. In a work such as this it must necessarily happen that certain rare conditions can only be treated of briefly; but so far as possible, I have embodied the results of sixteen years' experience as a hospital surgeon and teacher. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Operative Surgery, Vol. 1 of 2 AT the request of Sir Frederick Treves, I undertook the responsibility Of a complete revision of this Manual, of which the Second Edition has for some time been out of print. For the delay in the appearance of the Third Edition I must ask indulgence, in view Of the great amount Of work involved, and the extensive changes and additions that have had to be made. The ever-growing importance of Abdominal Surgery rendered it advisable that the Operations on the abdomen should be grouped together in the first volume. Some sections have been curtailed or omitted, such as that relating to Lateral Lithotomy, but most of them have been added to, and several are wholly new. A considerable number of fresh illustrations have been inserted, and a series of coloured plates has been introduced to make clearer the anatomy of certain important Operations. These coloured plates have all been drawn Specially for this Edition from dissections in the Museums of the Royal College of Surgeons and the London Hospital Medical College. I beg to thank the Councils of those institutions for their kindness and courtesy in this matter. So far as present surgical experience goes I have selected for description the best methods of performing the various Operations, but I have endeavoured to avoid encumbering the work with foot-notes and details as to the exact forms of incision, etc., employed by many individual surgeons. Both surgery and medicine, I venture to think, have been greatly hampered in the past by the needless introduction of names. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Operative Surgery, Vol. 1 of 2 N o apology is needed for the endeavour to render more accessible to the profession in this country a work on operative surgery by so eminent an authority as Professor Kocher. The book is essentially a record of the author's personal experience and of his own methods of operation. To avoid an appearance of egotism he has written in the first person plural, and this plan has been followed in the translation. The first English edition, which appeared in 1895, was translated from the second German edition, while the second English edition, which was twice the size of its predecessor, was translated from the fourth German edition. The present volume is a translation of the fifth and latest German edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Operative Surgery, Vol. 1: Founded on the Basis of Anatomy In the study of anatomy and surgery, strong motives are required to investigation and experiment. Our enquiries must still be rendered interesting, and our industry excited, by ingenious theory and speculative views. Without these, our efforts will be languid, and our pursuit of science fu tile and without energy. But the author Of this work must disclaim all these more pleasing methods of investigating his subjects, and keep steadily in his mind the Object he has already professed. Having to deliver a simple and concise system of rules for the actual practice Of surgery, he must keep close to the text, and can never venture to indulge in disquisition but on points the most essential. His wish is, that he may be said to have taken a simple and correct, not an ingenious View Of the practice Of surgery. This work I profess to be original. In writing it, I have not collected my library around me, and consulted books chiefly. But though original in one sense, the student may discover in it no novelties, nor the intelligent surgeon, who holds communication with his fellows Of the profession, find any rules or Observations with which he is not familiar.
