Book excerpt: The Water Quality Branch was relocated to the Environmental Protection Program (EPP) of the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks in January 1994. To integrate the branch within the EPP efficiently, it was directed to prepare a strategic plan for its business activities that would complement and support the visions and goals of both the EPP five-year action plan and the ministry strategic plan. This document summarizes the priorities and outlines some initial steps the program will take to address them. It includes a vision statement and a mission statement, guiding principles, core strategies, strategic action items, key success factors, and a first year operational plan for 1994/95.

Book Synopsis New Directions in Water Resources Planning for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by : National Research Council
Download or read book New Directions in Water Resources Planning for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has long been one of the federal government's key agencies in planning the uses of the nation's waterways and water resources. Though responsible for a range of water-related programs, the Corps's two traditional programs have been flood damage reduction and navigation enhancement. The water resource needs of the nation, however, have for decades been shifting away from engineered control of watersheds toward restoration of ecosystem services and natural hydrologic variability. In response to these shifting needs, legislation was enacted in 1990 which initiated the Corps's involvement in ecological restoration, which is now on par with the Corps's traditional flood damage reduction and navigation roles. This book provides an analysis of the Corps's efforts in ecological restoration, and provides broader recommendations on how the corps might streamline their planning process. It also assesses the impacts of federal legislation on the Corps planning and projects, and provides recommendations on how relevant federal policies might be altered in order to improve Corps planning. Another important shift affecting the Corps has been federal cost-sharing arrangements (enacted in 1986), mandating greater financial participation in Corps water projects by local co-sponsors. The book describes how this has affected the Corps-sponsor relationship, and comments upon how each group must adjust to new planning and political realities.

Download or read book Water Quality Management written by Peter Krenkel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Quality Management covers the fundamentals of water quality; water quality modeling and systems analysis of streams, reservoirs, and estuaries; and practical water quality topics and problems. The book presents topics on the legal aspects; the physical, chemical, and biological dimensions of water quality; and water quality requirements. The text also describes the pollution inputs from both point and nonpoint sources; eutrophication; thermal pollution; and groundwater quality. Detailed discussions on water quality parameters and characteristics; hydrologic and hydraulic aspects of water quality; mixing; and simple and complex water quality models are also included. The book further tackles topics on waste assimilative capacity determination, as well as effluent outfall design. Practicing environmental engineers and professionals involved in pollution abatement programs, environmental students undertaking studies in water quality management, and professionals involved in water quality management or water resources problems will find the text quite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During 1978-1982 the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) was responsible for a research project on Environmental Quality Control and Management. The project was begun under the direction of Professor O. F. Vasiliev (from the Institute of Hydrodynamics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences) and was subsequently led by myself. This review is very much a re'fiection of that IIASA project. The major themes of the IIASA project were: (i) research into the methodological aspects of modeling river and lake sys tems [some of the principal results of this research appear in M. B. Beck and G. van Straten (eds. ) (1983), Uncertainty and Forecasting of Water Quality (Springer, Berlin (West)), and in K. Fedra (1983), Environmental Modeling Under Uncertainty: Monte Carlo Simulation (IIASA Research Report RR-83-28)]; (ii) case studies in the application of mathematical models to lake eutrophi cation control [results of which are summarized in L. Somlyody, S. Hero dek, and J. Fischer (eds. ) (1983), Eutrophication of Shallow Lakes: Model ing and Management (The Lake Balaton Case Study) (IIASA Collaborative Proceedings CP-83-S3), and in K. Fedra (1983), A Modular Approach to Comprehensive System Simulation: A Case Study of Lakes and Watersheds (in W. K. Lauenroth, G. V. Skogerboe, and M. Flug (eds. ), Analysis of Ecological Systems: State-of-the-Art in Ecological Modelling, pp. 195-204. Elsevier, Amsterdam)]; iv (iii) a policy study of operational water qua, lity management [M. B. Beck (1981), Operational Water Quality Management: Beyond Planning and Design (IIASA Executive Report ER-7)].
Download or read book Water Quality written by Jim Perry and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-06-24 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a purely technical sub-discipline of hydrology, water quality management is now a social and political discipline, with concerns ranging from ensuring adequate health standards to preserving biological diversity and ecosystem integrity. This book goes beyond the technical manuals and specialty publications to provide support and guidance for the everyday decisions made by water-quality managers. Water Quality: Management of a Natural Resource addresses the rarely touched upon social, biophysical, land-use and policy considerations, which reflect the issues that confront managers and decision-makers. In a series of incisive reviews, experts address key topics in modern water resource management and case studies illustrate the successes and failures of past management efforts. Water Quality: Management of a Natural Resource develops and presents a management view requiring an awareness of: the social context of management, new ecological theories, and how policy is implemented in different situations and countries.
