Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In every discussion on the role that language plays in our lives, every orator – from prominent politicians and corporate figures to linguists, educational experts, and others – concedes that language is important in all spheres of life. Language is both personal and introspective, as well as public and communal. Without it, we would not be able to communicate and articulate our thoughts and feelings to ourselves, to those in our inner circles, and to those in the world at large. Without it, we would not be able to establish partnerships and collaborations, and to unite peoples of diverse backgrounds and intrinsic values. Without it, too, we would not be able to learn new discoveries and gain new knowledge. The nurturing of a language learning culture is of the utmost importance to ensure that language teaching and learning supports the development of individuals, societies, nations, and populations. Language researchers, educators, and practitioners need to ensure that their learners are empowered to remain relevant. They need to produce critical and analytical thinkers, and successful language users in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The collection of chapters in this volume addresses language teaching and learning dilemmas and draws attention to the challenges researchers have overcome and those they continue to face. The book chapters here reflect the transcendence by language teaching and learning of ordinary boundaries, especially with the advent of the digital revolution, and provide new perspectives, pedagogies, and approaches that help shape ethical, responsible, and sustainable policies. Readers of this volume, whether language practitioners, students, researchers, policy- and decision-makers, concerned educationists, or any interested individual, will gain new insights and experiences as they explore new identities, new instructional media for interactive teaching and learning and new modes of meaning in diverse local and global contexts.

Book excerpt: This volume gives language teachers, software designers, and researchers who wish to use technology in second or foreign language education the information they need to absorb what has been achieved so far and to make sense of it. It is designed to enable the kind of critical reading of a substantial literature that leads to a balanced and detailed knowledge of the field. Chapter by chapter, the book builds, through description, analysis, examples, and discussion, a detailed picture of modern CALL. In this book, the label “CALL” is interpreted broadly to include technology-enhanced language learning, Web-enhanced language learning, and information and communication technologies for language learning. The work is distinguished by its attention to a range of languages rather than just English. The authors first set the scene and introduce major areas of interest and growth in CALL, and then look in depth at seven important dimensions: design, evaluation, computer-mediated communication, theory, research, practice, and technology. Chapters on each of these topics include a description that reviews the recent literature, identifies themes, and presents representative projects that illustrate the dimension, followed by a discussion that provides in-depth analysis, and a conclusion offering suggestions for further work. Detailed references and links connect the description and discussion with original works and primary sources so the reader can follow up easily on areas of personal interest. Two concluding chapters discuss how the various dimensions might be brought together, the first from a practical point of view, the second with a view to the development of CALL as a whole.

It is fundamental for participation in democratic societies, and for social inclusion and cohesion. This handbook is a policy and working document which promotes convergence and coherence between the linguistic dimensions of various school subjects. It proposes measures to make explicit – in curricula, pedagogic material and teacher training – the specific linguistic norms and competences which learners must master in each school subject. It also presents the learning modalities that should allow all learners, and in particular the most vulnerable among them, to benefit from diversified language-learning situations in order to develop their cognitive and linguistic capacities.

Book excerpt: This popular text examines literacy from a multidimensional and interdisciplinary perspective. It "unpackages" the various dimensions of literacy--linguistic, cognitive, sociocultural, and developmental--and at the same time accounts for the interrelationships among them. The goal is to provide a conceptual foundation upon which literacy curriculum and instruction in school settings can be grounded.

Book excerpt: Abstract: In this study I propose a strong and innovative model of teaching that centers on the student, and I report on the efficacy of this model using quantitative research procedures. This model of teaching is systematized in the Marhaba! curriculum, a method of teaching first year high school Arabic that I designed, tested, and evaluated. The Marhaba! curriculum is founded on best practices and is a natural outgrowth of contemporary education theories, including non-linear curriculum design and multiple-modality teaching materials that take into consideration students' diverse learning styles. Analysis of data indicates that use of the Marhaba! curriculum positively influences student proficiency in Arabic. In particular, students become proficient regardless of a student's gender, grade, socioeconomic status, or parent educational background. Also, student proficiency is not dependent on a student's attitude to learning or engagement in class, or a student's attitude toward the curriculum.

Book excerpt: The Matter of Practice presents work by teacher-scholars from around the world who are rethinking the relationship between matter and meaning. By emphasizing spatial, bodily, and sensual dimensions of language and literacy practices, this volume offers a portrait of language pedagogy and research that challenges traditional barriers between subjects and objects, speech and noise, and languages and things. We envision the term ‘new materialisms’ as an invitation to locate theorizing, researching, and teaching practices within the rhythms and textures of our material, sensory, and perceptual lives. These chapters enact a hope that increased engagement with our physical surroundings and sensory experiences can extend the sphere of our social, creative, and intellectual labor and expand our understanding of what ‘counts’ as meaningful action.
