It was also stated, in order to prevent misunderstanding or delay, that the House should be apprised that, unless some other fully equivalent and sufficient security could be devised, it would be expected that the act should provide that the stipulated annual commutation should be payable out of the first receipts in each year, and that in case of any default in such payment, that the whole of the revenue surrendered should revert to the crown. A committee was appointed to prepare the bill on the subject of the surrender, by His Majesty, of his casual and territorial revenues of the Province. The House of Assembly had previously passed a resolution that the sum of required by His Majesty's government as a permanent grant for the surrender of the casual and territorial revenue of the Province, was greater than the charges contemplated to be placed thereon required, yet that the great desire of the House of Assembly to have this important subject finally settled, should induce them to accept the proposal contained in Mr. Stanley's despatch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Brunswick, as a Home for Emigrants New Brunswick and Nova Scotia formerly constituted one Pro vince. In 1784 a separation took place, since when New Brunswick has enjoyed a distinct Colonial existence. The Geographical limits of the Province are within the degrees of 46deg. 1' 37 north latitude, and between the parallels of 83de and 89deg. West longitude. Situated between Canada and Nova otia, and separated from Prince Edward Island by only a narrow strait, New Brunswick may be said to be the centre of the Colonial system of England on the Atlantic Coast of America. Canada lies to the north, the State of Maine to the west, and Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island to the east. The Province has a sea coast of considerably over 400 miles; her shores are washed by the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Bay of Fundy, and along this extensive coast line there are numerous nne harbours and have well adapted for the purposes of commerce. The area of New Brunswick is a uare miles - larger than Belgium and Holland united, nearly twice t 0 size of Switzerland, and larger than either Denmark or Greece. Her greatest length is 210 miles, her greatest breadth 180. The natural features of the Province are picturesque rather than bold and startling, in the sense that the tra veller who has visited the Alps or the Andes, understands these range of mountains, the highest of which is feet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the New Brunswick Historical Society The New Brunswick Historical Society has taken part in several events of historic interest since the publication of the last number. One of these was the unveiling, on the afternoon of October 19, 1916, of the handsome bronze tablet marking the site of the old Suspension Bridge at the western end. The ceremony was performed by His Honor Lt.-Gov. Josiah Wood, who spoke reminiscently. He was preceded by Mr. George A. Henderson, President, who made a brief address, referring to the prompt response of the provincial government when the matter of the tablet was suggested to them. He also mentioned the objects of the Society in preserving information in reference to the past in the Province and slated how the Society had marked in one way and another matters of special significance. Other speakers were Hon. Geo. J. Clarke, Premier, Hon. J. B. M. Baxter, K. C., Attorney General, Mr. H. R. McLellan, Warden of the County, and Mayor R. T. Hayes of St. John. On July 1, 1918, at Annapolis Royal, N. S., a sundial was unveiled by His Honor Lieut.-Gov. McCallum Grant, of Nova Scotia. Other speakers were Mayor Alice, Prof. Koopman, of Brown University, Providence, R. I., A. L. Davidson, M. P., Mr. J. Plimsoll Edwards, President of Nova Scotia Historical Society, Justice Longley, a former President, Mr. Timothy O'Brien, Librarian of New Brunswick Historical Society, and the venerable Judge Savary. The memorial was erected by Col. R. C. Shannon, of Brockport, N. Y., to the memory of his ancestor, George Vaughan, who took part in the capture of Port Royal in 1710. On the afternoon of September 24, 1918, the beautiful bronze tablet, erected to the memory of Elias Hardy, was unveiled in the Court House auditorium by His Honor Chief Justice McKeown, who delivered an appropriate address.
