Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argues that understanding Huston’s film adaptations of literary works is essential to understanding his oeuvre as a filmmaker. John Huston as Adaptor makes the case that adaptation is the salient element in Huston’s identity as a filmmaker and that his early and deep attraction to the experience of reading informed his approach to film adaptation. Thirty-four of Huston’s thirty-seven films were adaptations of literary texts, and they stand as serious interpretations of literary works that could only be made by an astute reader of literature. Indeed, Huston asserted that a film director should be above all else a reader and that reading itself should be the intellectual and emotional basis for filmmaking. The seventeen essays in this volume not only address Huston as an adaptor, but also offer an approach to adaptation studies that has been largely overlooked. How an adaptor reads, the works to which he is drawn, and how his literary interpretations can be brought to the screen without relegating film to a subservient role are some of the issues addressed by the contributors. An introductory chapter identifies Huston as the quintessential Hollywood adaptor and argues that his skill at adaptation is the mark of his authorial signature. The chapters that follow focus on fifteen of Huston’s most important films, including The Maltese Falcon (1941), The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), The African Queen (1951), The Night of the Iguana (1964), Under the Volcano (1984), and The Dead (1987), and are divided into three areas: aesthetics and textuality; history and social context; and theory and psychoanalysis. By offering a more comprehensive account of the centrality of adaptation to Huston’s films, John Huston as Adaptor offers a greater understanding of Huston as a filmmaker.

Book excerpt: Gospel singer George David Priest and his wife, Bonnie, were married just seven weeks when George was diagnosed with terminal malignant melanoma. In this remarkably poignant and heartfelt narrative, you will discover how their faith in God brings the light of hope while in the depths of despair. Personal conversations between George and Bonnie shed light on the differences between religion and a relationship with God. Their tale provides important information on prevention and treatment of malignant melanoma and palliative care options. "What an astounding book! I thoroughly enjoyed the references to Dr. K bler-Ross which added to the discussion. Thank you for this intimate account of your life together with George, and the large part that God played in your lives. "Physicians must minister to the patient's mind, body and spirit." - Dr. John Seely, renowned Palliative Care Physician, and former Dean of Medicine. "I loved the book. Besides being an educational tool, it weaves a beautiful story of love, strength and spirituality. This book gave me a renewed sense of faith and its meaning." - Kathy Kustra, MSW, RSW, Oncology Social Worker - Ottawa General Hospital. "The couple's riveting experience is captured so intensely that it brings the reader into a transfixed, totally captivating state of involvement. With the day by day detail and the valuable medical explanations to support the process of a diagnosis of terminal malignant melanoma, the reader becomes a partner in their journey - an amazing journey of love, devotion, commitment and determination." - Joan Hodder, Retired Teacher

Book excerpt: Place-based Curriculum Design provides pre-service and practicing teachers both the rationale and tools to create and integrate meaningful, place-based learning experiences for students. Practical, classroom-based curricular examples illustrate how teachers can engage the local and still be accountable to the existing demands of federal, state, and district mandates. Coverage includes connecting the curriculum to students’ outside-of-school lives; using local phenomena or issues to enhance students’ understanding of discipline-based questions; engaging in in-depth explorations of local issues and events to create cross-disciplinary learning experiences, and creating units or sustained learning experiences aimed at engendering social and environmental renewal. An on-line resource (www.routledge.com/9781138013469) provides supplementary materials, including curricular templates, tools for reflective practice, and additional materials for instructors and students.
