Birds weave their nests, the lion finds a lair, Man builds his halls, - These are but coverts from earth's war and storm, Homes where our lesser lives take shape and breath; But, if no heavenly man has grown, what form Clothes thee at death? And when thy meed of penalty is o'er, And fire has burnt the dross, where gold is none, Shall separate life, but wasted heretofore, Still linger on? God fills all space; whatever doth offend From His unbounded Presence shall be spurned; Or deem'st thou He should garner tares, whose end Is to be burned? If thou wouldst see the Power that round thee sways, In whom all motion, thought, and life are cast, Know, that the pure, who travel heavenward ways, See God at last." Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ... EPILOGUE. MAN, A CONSCIOUS BEING. Man comes into the world as a conscious being, with an aptitude for acquiring knowledge. His consciousness is an attribute of life; its source as inscrutable as the cause of life; so that to demonstrate the origin of the one would be to unveil the beginning of the other. Hence the source of the consciousness of man is as great a mystery as is the source of his reason, if it be not identical therewith. This consciousness man shares with the animated kingdoms of nature; and, if there be any truth in the doctrine of selective evolution, derives it through these kingdoms. But, indeed, a rudimentary consciousness is found in the vegetable kingdom, in those sensitive plants which shrink from the touch. Hence consciousness would appear to spring from the primary germ of nascent being, whatever that may be, and to increase in intensity with advance in organization, until in man it gains its culmination. The awakening consciousness of man is a consciousness of self, of his own existence, of his own needs, of his dependent state. This consciousness, showing itself as instinct, causes him to search outside himself for that which will supply his needs. This conscious instinct makes the infant man aware of the presence and person of his mother, and causes him to seek from her all that he requires. Not always with her, he becomes conscious of the presence of other beings, of beings like unto and yet not his mother. The presence of these beings awakens and stimulates his perceptions, until, guided by these apart from his conscious instinct, he learns to distinguish his mother from them. Then he becomes conscious that some of the beings like unto and yet not his mother, take notice of himself; while others only slightly...

The word is derived from a Latin word which means to bind back. The primary and all important idea expressed in it is that of binding, of Obligation and accountability to a higher and anterior power. The truly religious man feels re sponsibilities of which others know nothing. He is conscious of having bound himself to a better life, and a nobler service, than any which the world can offer him. In a word, he has undertaken to act in all things not from himself, but from God, -to do, not his own selfish pleasure, but his Heavenly Father's will. He feels his own need of the Divine Presence. To him it is not enough to understand and believe. He must worship. He must bow down in prayer. He must establish and feel a personal relationship between himself and God. He must go to the Lord in a devout and humble Spirit, trying to come under the Divine influence, in order that his life may grow into accord with the Divine life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Life in Christ: A Study in Personal Religion This volume is a necessary sequel to an earlier one entitled Through Christ to God, in which I endeavored to set forth the historical basis of the Christian faith and hope. The present volume goes on to delineate the goodly structure of the Christian life which rests securely on that firm foundation. In the former volume, what may be called the theological element claimed almost exclusive attention. In the present one, inward spiritual experience and practical life occupy a large place. Each volume needs to be supplemented by the other. For theology is useless unless it bears fruit in righteousness and peace and beneficence; and inward experience is fitful and uncertain unless it rests on reliable external evidence. The New Life in Christ portrayed in this volume, I have endeavored to investigate according to the principles of scientific research. Iv. While appeals to carry out the duty of foreign missions are equally conspicuous by their absence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Highway of Life: And Other Sermons This text forms part of a great Hebrew symphony. It is a poet's description of an ideal life. The symbolism speaks of the poetry of the road. It is not of the battle of life that the poet sings, nor life builded upon a sure and firm foundation, but life as a journey, along which the wayfaring men of this life travel to the City of God. Life is a highway. There are many ways, and many paths that men travel, but there is only one highway. There is only one way to live the life and come at last to the goal. The right to the way - well, what is it? So far as we know life, the right to the road belongs to the rich in this worlds goods, to the influential, to the powerful, to the privileged. They come to their goal unhindered. The race is to the swift and the battle to the strong. The inspired poet who is looking out upon the highway of life does not so see things. He knows that the verdict of history is that the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of Christ: Studies of the Model Life It was in the soft atmosphere of the home of a scholar and teacher that I first saw the composite photographs, which, in that instance, combined and expressed the strongest facial traits of his family and of a class of students who had been under his instruction in a striking portrait of each group. It was the phenomenal and weird workmanship of light. Unique, condensed, unified, character was represented by the combined result. It were impossible to reduce into one personification the manifold Aspects of Christ. As even the world itself would not contain the books that should be written to fully set forth all the things that Jesus did, if they should be written every one, so the representation of Him would be imperfect however multiplied and varied might be the forms and statements which should be intended to characterize Him. Not only is Humanity fully indwelling in Him, but Divinity is expressed in Him as well. When we have said all, that which remains unsaid is greater than all that is spoken. May the perusal of these essays, a few out of many that might be written of the impressive Aspects of the Christ, quicken our appreciation of the Divine Redeemer and deepen our love for Him who first loved us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Wayfarer's Faith: Aspects of the Common Basis of Religious Life In the eighteenth century there swept over Europe a wave Of new thought, which liberated men's minds from Old superstitions and the narrow ness of former dogmatism, and produced a sort of freemasonry of new ideas between men whose national religious and political upbringing had been wholly different. But this wave of liberal thought failed to produce a permanent sense Of unity; in due time came a counter-movement when men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Theology This book has been undertaken at the request of number of my friends who feel that recent criticisms of what has come to be called New Theology ought to be dealt with in some comprehensive and systematic way. With this suggestion my own judgment concurs, but only so far as my own pulpit teaching is concerned. I cannot pretend to speak for anyone else, and therefore this monograph must not be understood as an authoritative exposition of the views held and expounded by other preachers who may be in sympathy with the New Theology. From its very nature, as I hope the following pages will show, the New Theology cannot be a creed, but its adherents have a common stand point. My only reason for calling this book by that title is that a considerable section of the public at present persists in regarding me as in a special way the exponent of it; indeed from the correspondence which has been proceeding in the press it is evident that many people credit me with having invented both the name and the thing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Aspects of Primitive Church Life For the purpose of these addresses it must suffice to look at certain aspects of primitive Church history In their general outline. The field is very wide, and we can only traverse parts of it: and even In regard to the subjects on which we can dwell, a full discussion of many details would be out of place, would more than fill up the time at our disposal. Our aim must be to form or to recover such Ideas of the Church life of those distant "first centuries" as may afterwards admit of further illustrations, and may not require to be cast aside as determined by an erroneous standpoint. Our first question may be stated thus: What was the primitive Church like as a community? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the New Age IT is no small prudence to keep silence in an evil time, says Thomas a Kempis; and though the dark night is past and the day of victory has come, silence still commends itself as a counsel of discretion. For this is a time of obscure and tangled issues, of the seething turmoil of new and dying tendencies and the blind struggle of unborn and half-born impulses. What we took to be an ordered map has re solved itself into a gchaos of crossing lines, and the only thing to be asserted With confidence about a complex of life and thought so full of intricacy and contradiction is its utter im predicability. Perhaps that time ought never to pass, but if, in any measure, the criticism of the church has of late been suspended, it is certainly reopened now, in good earnest. Nor is this criticism confined to outsiders; the church is forced to listen in these days to caustic censures from those who speak from within the fold.
