This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of language attitudes is important not only because attitudes can affect language maintenance and language change but also because such reflections and discussions can bring light to social, cultural, political and educational matters that require an interdisciplinary approach. This volume fills a crucial void in the field of Hispanic and Lusophone linguistics by introducing the latest production in the discipline of attitudes toward Spanish, Spanish sign language, Portuguese, Guarani and Papiamentu around the world, from South America and the Caribbean to the United States, Spain and Japan. The studies presented in this collection – a variety of sociolinguistic scenarios and methodological approaches – will make an important contribution to theoretical discussions on linguistic attitudes, specifically in the domains of language integration through education, language policy, and language maintenance. This book is intended for sociolinguists, social scientists and scholars in the humanities as well as graduate students enrolled in sociolinguistics courses.

This book was released on 2023-04-11 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades, the field of language and literature teaching has experienced considerable growth as a result of the wide array of new methodological avenues that have arisen from different angles. This paradigm shift has paved the way for the integration of newly conceived didactic resources such as the mediation of social networks for learning language or the interdisciplinarity of culturally mediated language education. It is crucial to understand this shift in order to ensure students receive the best education possible. New Approaches to the Investigation of Language Teaching and Literature presents an overview of the ongoing methodological tools, practices, research designs, and strategies used in language and literature teaching and provides education researchers and practitioners with empirically sustained evidence of teaching strategies that may be implemented in language education. Covering key topics such as language skills, adult learners, digital literacy, and learning aids, this reference work is ideal for researchers, scholars, academicians, practitioners, educators, and students.

Book Synopsis Rewriting the African Diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean by : Robert L. Adams Jr.
Download or read book Rewriting the African Diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Robert L. Adams Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers the African Diaspora through the underexplored Afro-Latino experience in the Caribbean and South America. Utilizing both established and emerging approaches such as feminism and Atlantic studies, the authors explore the production of historical and contemporary identities and cultural practices within and beyond the boundaries of the nation-state. Rewriting the African Diaspora in the Caribbean and Latin America illustrates how far the fields of Afro-Latino and African Diaspora studies have advanced beyond the Herskovits and Frazier debates of the 1940s. The book’s arguments complicate Herskovits’ insistence on Black culture being an exclusive reflection of African survivals, as well as Frazier’s counter-claim of African American culture being a result of slavery and colonialism. This collection of thought-provoking essays extends the concepts of diaspora and transnationalism, forcing the reader to reassess their present limitations as interpretive tools. In the process, Afro-Latinos are rendered visible as national actors and transnational citizens. This book was originally published as a special issue of African and Black Diaspora.
Book Synopsis Urban Planning in Lusophone African Countries by : Carlos Nunes Silva
Download or read book Urban Planning in Lusophone African Countries written by Carlos Nunes Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban planning on the five Lusophone African countries - Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and Sao Tome and Príncipe - has so far been relatively overlooked in planning literature. Bringing together a team of leading scholars, this book fills the gap by providing an in-depth analysis of key issues in the history of urban planning and discussing the key challenges confronting contemporary urban planning in these countries. The book argues that urban planning is a non-neutral and non-value free kind of public action and, therefore, ideology, planning theories, urban models and the ideological role urban planning has played are some of the key issues addressed. For that reason, the practice of Urban Planning is also seen as the outcome of a complex interrelationship between structure and agency, with the role of key planers being examined in some of the chapters. The findings and insights presented by the contributing authors confirm previous research on urban planning in the colonial and postcolonial periods in Lusophone African countries and at the same time break fresh ground and offer additional insights as new evidence has been collected from archives and in fieldwork carried out by a new generation of researchers. In addition, it outlines possible directions for future research.
Book Synopsis Screening songs in Hispanic and Lusophone cinema by : Lisa Shaw
Download or read book Screening songs in Hispanic and Lusophone cinema written by Lisa Shaw and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, eighteen experts from a variety of academic backgrounds explore the use of songs in films from the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds. This volume illustrates how – rather than simply helping to tell the story of – songs in Hispanic and Lusophone cinema commonly upset the hierarchy of the visual over the aural, thereby rendering their hearing a complex and rich subject for analysis. Screening songs... constitutes a ground-breaking, interdisciplinary collection. Of particular interest to scholars and academics in the areas of Film Studies, Hispanic Studies, Lusophone Studies and Musicology, this volume opens up the study of Hispanic and Lusophone cinema to vital, new, critical approaches. The soundtracks of films as varied as City of God, All About My Mother, Bad Education and Buena Vista Social Club are analysed alongside those of lesser-known works that range from the melodramas of Mexican cinema’s golden age to Brazilian and Portuguese musical comedies from the 1940s and 1950s. Fiction films are studied alongside documentaries, the work of established directors like Pedro Almodóvar, Carlos Saura and Nelson Pereira dos Santos alongside that of emerging filmmakers, and performances by iconic stars like Caetano Veloso and Chavela Vargas alongside the songs of Spanish Gypsy groups, Mexican folk songs and contemporary Brazilian rap.
Book Synopsis Cultural Organizations, Networks and Mediators in Contemporary Ibero-America by : Diana Roig-Sanz
Download or read book Cultural Organizations, Networks and Mediators in Contemporary Ibero-America written by Diana Roig-Sanz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes an innovative conceptual framework to explore cultural organizations at a multilateral level and cultural mediators as key figures in cultural and institutionalization processes. Specifically, it analyzes the role of Ibero-American mediators in the institutionalization of Hispanic and Lusophone cultures in the first half of the 20th century by means of two institutional networks: PEN (the non-governmental writer’s association) and the International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation (predecessor to UNESCO). Attempting to combine cultural and global history, sociology, and literary studies, the book uses an analytical focus on intercultural networks and cultural transfer to investigate the multiple activities and roles that these mediators and cultural organizations set in motion. Literature has traditionally studied major figures and important centers of cultural production, but other regions and localities also played a crucial role in the development of intellectual cooperation. This book reappraises the place of Ibero-America in international cultural relations and retrieves the lost history of key secondary actors. The book will appeal to scholars from international relations, global and cultural history, sociology, postcolonial Studies, world and comparative literature, and New Hispanisms.
