Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The daughter of a D-Day paratrooper and her husband, a PTSD therapist, discover a family legacy of love, trauma, and resilience when they set out to explore a vast trove of WWII correspondence, official military documents, personal effects, and unique militaria found in closets and basements after her father’s death. Young Sue Gurwell had always known that her father had been a paratrooper. An old camo parachute from Holland served as her backyard tent, and high on a shelf she mustn’t touch, eight red devils in parachutes grinned from the front of mysterious drinking glasses Dad had sent Mom during the war. And then there was the special poem in his roll-top desk she sometimes snuck a peek at, written by a member of Dad’s regiment. This poem was a premonition of the sergeant’s death. “Yes,” her dad told her, “He was right—he died on D-Day.” But it’s not until 2016, after her parents had both passed away, that Susan Gurwell Talley and her husband Jack L. Talley begin to understand the true extent and significance of the wartime artifacts that had been staples of Sue’s childhood. The Talley’s discovered that Sue’s father, Lt. George L. Gurwell, Executive Officer, HqHq, 508th PIR, had silently squirreled away thousands of wartime documents in the family home. Like most combat veterans, George was never one to talk about the war; but the historic collection of official records, correspondence, photographs, maps, memorabilia, cultural artifacts, and unique ephemera constitute quite possibly the most extensive, various, and complete documentation of the 508th held privately today. This precious resource could not have passed into better hands than those of Jack and Sue Talley. Jack, a PhD psychologist specializing in PTSD, was the first to understand that George had PTSD symptoms that still lingered from the war years when he and George were introduced on June 6, 2001. That evening, the 57th anniversary of D-Day, George first opened up about the war, and preceded to talk late into the night. In that conversation lies the genesis of this book.

At the age of two, Carly Fleischmann was diagnosed with severe autism and an oral motor condition that prevented her from speaking. Doctors predicted that she would never intellectually develop beyond the abilities of a small child. Carly remained largely unreachable through the years. Then, at the age of ten, she had a breakthrough. While working with her devoted therapists, Carly reached over to their laptop and typed “HELP TEETH HURT,” much to everyone’s astonishment. Although Carly still struggles with all the symptoms of autism, she now has regular, witty, and profound conversations on the computer with her family and her many thousands of supporters online. One of the first books to explore firsthand the challenges of living with autism, Carly’s Voice brings readers inside a once-secret world in the company of an inspiring young woman who has found her voice and her mission

Book excerpt: Never Give Up is the inspiring memoir of Jenny Maher and her fierce determination to make her own way in life."e;As a quadriplegic, with no family support or place to live, I had to live in the hospital/nursing home. My goal no matter what therapists told me was to get around in a manual chair and to live independently."e;My treatment got so bad that all alone I took a plane from Colorado to Tennessee with only two backpacks to reach the spinal cord center. There they continued my therapy, took care of my wounds, and even taught me to drive."e;I wrote this book not to just tell people my story, but to show people who have given up, lost hope, or don't think they can make it another day to not give up, life is full of obstacles. That's what makes it interesting. Though I've learned as long as I kept moving forward, even if it was baby steps, I was doing well. Even when sometimes I took a few steps back or fell down, I learned with God's help to get back up and keep moving. I hope the people who read this will find the determination in themselves and not give up."e;Jenny Maher now lives in Richmond, Virginia, where she has bought a house and has two cats Pouncy and Sly to love and keep her entertained. She plans to continue writing and the next book she is working on is a murder mystery.Publisher's website: http://sbpra.com/JennyMaher

Book excerpt: Vic: Never Give Up, is the 3rd book in the series The Incredible Adventures of Vic Challenger Vic and her friend Lin Li plan a two or three-night camp out at the Grand Canyon before they head for Britain. They didn’t plan on the Dine’ who want to hang them, the madman, the mysterious cavern, and the slavers (now more commonly called ‘human traffickers’). 48 hours before their ship is to leave New York, they find themselves in San Francisco. Historical note: They could not hop a passenger plane and zip over. It was “impossible” for them to make it. However, never underestimate the ingenuity of a farm girl with 2 degrees and an indwelling cave girl persona. En-route they meet a survivor of the Titanic and eventually make it to the Scottish highlands where they expect a more restful trip than what they experienced in Arizona. They do learn to play peever and shinty and to love Squash. However, they didn’t plan on the descendants of Christie Cleek or and the herd of beasts which the Picts were petroglyping about .a millennia ago. And Vic realizes even a heroess can have tragedy in her personal life. One lesson learned: don’t wait until it is too late. Fast-paced and unpredictable, action adventure in the tradition of the adventure pulps of the early 20th Century. If you like Doc Savage, The Avenger (Dick Benson), Nancy Drew, or Tarzan or any other novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs you will love Vic Challenger. What reviewers think of the series: Vic Challenger personifies every sword or ax-wielding heroine ever drawn by any heroic fantasy artist. the female answer to Indiana Jones Great Campy Multi-Genre Book I have recommended the Vic Challenger books to my wife and to all of my children Any of these novels would make a really good movie. if you like Clive Cussler or James Rollins, these are definitely the books for you. ___ “The Incredible Adventures of Vic Challenger” series is inspired by writers like Edgar Rice Burroughs, H. Rider Haggard, Jules Verne, Arthur Conan Doyle and H. G. Wells; and by characters like Nancy Drew, Lara Croft, Alan Quatermain, Doc Savage and his cousin Patricia Savage, and Dick Benson and his assistant Nellie Gray. The writing style has been compared to Burroughs and is also reminiscent of early action driven horror novels by Graham Masterton. The series is set in the 1920’s and considerable research adds to the “realism” You will find yourself effortlessly learning bits of history, some of which may amaze you. Vic’s travels are woven into the history of the time, so you may be asking yourself “Is this real?”

Book excerpt: Never Give Up is an amazing true story. It is a case study of an experienced elementary school teacher who was motivated to change her teaching practices from teacher-centered, transmission approaches to student-centered, transformational approaches in the context of a Professional Development School. You would think she would have accomplished her goal with support from the PDS participants in a year or two. Instead, she spent seven years encountering struggles, set-backs, and occasionally small triumphs until she achieved bone deep change in her teaching practices. What was she aiming for and why did it take so long? How did she finally achieve her goals? This book is about her journey of change. On one level, this is a story of a teacher as she struggles to change her teaching practice in ways that center on children’s learning rather than on teacher centered rote learning. On a deeper level, it is a look at how innovative reform movements and wellmeaning professional development efforts fall short of bringing about deep seated change in teaching methods. It raises weighty questions such as how teacher preparation programs should begin the process of instilling habits of exploration, experimentation, research and learning in their pre-service teachers so that they continuously work at updating and upgrading their teaching practices. It is a message to curriculum developers, policy makers and the public at large that lasting teacher professional development takes more time and support than the more immediate workshop approaches. It raises many questions about how teachers learn and how they can keep their practices fresh and innovative throughout their careers. A study guide designed to elicit deep thought and discussion of the many issues raised by this story accompanies the book. The book and study guide are a valuable supplemental text for courses addressing teacher learning, professional development, workplace learning, teacher change, constructivist teaching practices, mentoring, educational administration and educational policy. The study guide is also a tool to stimulate discussion among groups of readers such as pre-service and practicing teachers, school and district administrators, educational policy makers and the public at large who are interested in educational reform.

Book excerpt: What if the answers to our modern crises are found in ancient truths? This book will give you the hope and courage you need to stay firm in your faith despite the circumstances going on around you. You will keep your devotion to God and boldly share your faith. The truth of the gospel is in great danger. Biblical beliefs are being attacked. Biblical morality is being assaulted. Christians are being insulted for holding to the ancient truths found in the Scriptures. We are in a fight to be heard and not canceled—to share our faith amidst the cancel culture. What is God’s message to us this day? What does He want from us in these troubled times? Resilience. Courage. Faithfulness. His call to us is to never give up. Never give up…on the infallible Word of God. Never give up…on the faith once delivered. In his last letter, the aged and imprisoned apostle Paul realized that his final days were approaching. So, he wrote his last legacy message for his beloved Timothy and for future generations of disciples—namely you and me. In Never Give Up, Dr. Michael Youssef echoes the words of the apostle Paul so that we may experience encouragement—and know triumph in the midst of defeat. With a sense of urgency, we are called to the steadfast service of a certain conviction. Despite hardship and suffering, we can learn to be unwavering in our devotion. As followers of Jesus, too often we are tempted to throw in the towel, give up the fight, and give in to fear. But we must not let that be our reality. We have not been abandoned. God is here. Yet conviction is needed and service is required. No matter what comes our way, we must never give up.

Whether we're winning or losing, he holds his head high, and he knows himself and handles himself so well, others can't help but follow him. The way he practices and plays forces you to become a better teammate; the way he demands hustle and toughness forces you to become a better leader; and the way he carries himself inspires you to become a better person. This made his return to playing on October 30 against Buffalo all the more electrifying. The stadium was louder that night than the nights we had raised our Super Bowl banners. Our captain, our leader, our inspiration was back on the field doing what he loved to do. Tedy had spent months rehabbing, had countless doctor visits, and had undergone hundreds of tests trying to play again. Just eight months after our victory in Super Bowl XXXIX, here we were celebrating a much bigger victory on our home field. Sure it was great to win the game, but that night we were celebrating Tedy's return as he showed us teammates, fans, family, and friends what it takes to become victorious in life. "You might be coming to this book as a fan of Tedy's football skills and, don't get me wrong, gaining the insights of one of the best defenders in Patriots history is worth the price of admission, but that's just part of the story. There are a lot of reasons to look up to him, and I promise you will finish this book with an admiration for him on a much deeper level." --Tom Brady (from the Foreword)

Book excerpt: Never Stop Pushing is a motivational autobiography by Olympic Greco-Roman champion wrestler Rulon Gardner (Gold Medal, 2000; Bronze Medal, 2004). This inspiring memoir comes from one of the world's most remarkable athletes who achieved arguably the greatest upset in individual sports history when he defeated the Russian Alexander Karelin -- three-time Olympic champ, undefeated and unscored upon for a decade before his match with Gardner -- in the 2000 Gold Medal match. Rulon Gardner tells the story of his impoverished upbringing as one of nine children in a close-knit Mormon family on a farm in Wyoming, where in performing unceasing chores he developed tremendous strength at an early age. Gardner writes about his struggles in school made arduous by learning disabilities that have challenged him his whole life. Also, after winning his Gold Medal, we read how this champion survived a snowmobile accident that marooned him outdoors for eighteen hours in high country. Rulon Gardner recovered from this and went on to defend his Gold Medal at Athens in 2004 -- yet another comeback from this athlete who was supposed to simply fade away.

Book excerpt: For Teachers and Administrators. Follow Emilio "Dee" DaBramo's forty-five year career as a teacher and administrator that began in 1948. During his tenure at the Mamaroneck, N.Y. Union Free School District (1960 to 1978), he solved the high school drop-out problem that was endemic in the socially, culturally and economically-deprived neighborhoods. His alternative school APPLE Program (A Place where People Learn Excellence) and his Summer Co-Op Program designed for the targeted neighborhoods, were a huge success. The APPLE Program garnered a ninety percent graduation rate and a resulting college graduation rate of better than seventy percent. His philosophy of Never Give Up on a Kid, and the organizational structure of these programs are well-documented and translatable to almost any school system. For WWII Historians. Drafted into the Army Air Corps at age nineteen, Emilio DaBramo served as a Radio Operator on a B-24 bomber during WWII. Fly along with the crew on their 31 missions over German occupied Europe. The exploits of the crew are well documented, including the disastrous carpet bombing raid at St. Lo, France and the heretofore untold story of the air delivery of 700,000 gallons of fuel to General Patton's Third Army tanks in France during Operation Cobra. Re-live their crash landing in France after being shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire over Cologne, Germany. For WWII G.I. Bill Historians. In 1945 Emilio DaBramo enrolled at Cortland State Teachers College under the WWII G.I. Bill. Read about the social and educational challenges that faced the veterans, the college administrators and professors after the WWII veterans arrived on campus. For Special Olympic Historians. Emilio DaBramo's early work with the mentally and physically challenged individuals, in the late 1940's through the 1960's, caught the attention of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Impressed with his work, she appointed him as a volunteer member of the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation's Advisory Committee and as a clinician for the Special Olympics. Read the heretofore untold story of his twelve year tenure (1968-1980) with the foundation during which time he conducted clinics in every state and in several European countries related to organizing and operating Special Olympic Games. He was the Games Director for the State of New York for the first twelve years of the program (1968 through 1980). In tribute to Emilio "Dee" DaBramo, royalties from this book will be distributed as scholarships through the SUNY Cortland Foundation.
