Book excerpt: After caring for a crotchety countess, Patience Ramsey wants a more purposeful position. So, when Miss Thorn of the Fortune Employment Agency offers her the post of assistant to amateur apothecary Augusta Orwell, Patience jumps at the chance. Then her new employer introduces her at an Easter house party as the bride-to-be of her nephew Sir Harold Orwell. Miss Thorn's cat Fortune may approve of Sir Harry, but Patience has no interest in borrowing the handsome baronet. She's had her heart trampled on by false promises before. Sir Harry has enough on his hands trying to restore the family name while spying for the English against the French. But the pretty Patience could cover for him when he must ply his trade during the house party, so he convinces her to agree to the charade. As Harry's work brings danger closer, he begins to realize Patience embodies everything he could want in a wife. Can he convince her to overlook the scandals surrounding him and exchange their false engagement for a true love? This sweet, clean Regency romance is the sequel to Never Doubt a Duke. Fortune's Brides: Only a matchmaking cat can hunt true love. Here's a taste: "What happened?" Patience asked, plucking the fabric away from the cut on Harry's arm. "Caught myself on a briar on the way home," he said, watching her. "I would commend you on your ability to lie," Patience said, "but it's not a convincing lie. No briar, sir, cuts through a sturdy wool coat and muslin shirt. I cannot tend to the wound unless I can see all of it. Remove your shirt, please." It was likely the urgency that made her speak so boldly. It was likely his injury that made him obey. She went to fetch the washbasin and cloth that had been left for her. Turning toward him, she tried not to stare at the bands of muscle, the sprinkling of dark hair. Clearly, he did something other than gamble and drink the days away. "If you must know," he said, "I was shot at. One of the pitfalls of chasing a married lady." Oh, but he was wicked. "You are fortunate the husband was such a poor shot." She wet the washcloth with the rosewater and dabbed at the wound. The blood was congealing now, oozing slowly from the gash. "I only wish I'd run faster," he replied. "Ouch!" Patience glanced up with her sweetest smile. "Forgive me. It will be tender for some time. Unlike your feelings for the lady, I suspect." She busied herself opening the jar and dipping up a fingerful of the ointment. He flinched back. "You're certain it's safe?" Patience raised her brow. "I'm hardly going to poison you, Sir Harold." "Why not? Gussie tries on a regular basis." "And why would your own aunt want to poison a gentleman of your standing?" That grin popped into view, bringing out the dimple again. "As you can see, she has countless reasons. Very well, do your worst. I'll endeavor to bear it like a man." Patience bit back a response but spread the ointment over the wound. "And when I'm finished, you must retire to another room." He inspected her handiwork, then refolded the cravat to tie it over the wound. "But you've made me so comfortable here." Patience handed him his shirt. "I've done all I can. If you refuse to leave, I'll simply have to ask your aunt for other accommodations. Even if Miss Thorn, Miss Villers, and her brother are in residence, there must be somewhere I can sleep undisturbed." In the act of pulling on the shirt, he stiffened. "You can't ask Gussie. Not in front of the Villers." Why did he look even paler than a moment ago? Well, she was about to make it worse yet again. He could not rise in the morning innocent to his aunt's...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon is determined to conquer the world with his steam-powered weapons. Nothing in England can stop him … except two young lady inventors. In 1819, France is surrounded by armies. With Russia in the north, the Karlsruhe Confederacy in the east, and a pirate kingdom in the south, Napoleon cannot break out, nor can the English Navy seem to break in. Europe teeters on the edge of a sword. Whichever side rules the air will win. Celeste Blanchard, daughter of the Emperor’s disgraced Air Minister, is running out of time to develop an air ship that can carry his armies to England and restore her mother to glory. But on a daring and desperate test flight, she is blown off course … and washes up, half drowned, on the shores of Cornwall, in the heart of enemy territory. Loveday Penhale, cosseted daughter of gentry, has her own inventions to build, even as pressure mounts to behave like a proper young lady and seek a husband instead of a design for a high-pressure steam engine. But when Arthur Trevelyan, heir to the neighboring estate, Gwynn Place, asks for her help in rescuing an unconscious young woman on the beach, Loveday discovers an aeronaut and an inventor as skilled as she is. Between them, a friendship blossoms, and Loveday wonders if they might even pull off the impossible and invent an air ship that will catch the eye of the Tinkering Prince Regent, who has offered a prize to anyone who can help England break the impasse. Celeste’s loyalties are torn in two. If she is caught working secretly for France, she will lose her friend, the love of an honorable man—and her life. But if Napoleon learns she has betrayed him, she will be executed on sight. Can friendship prevail in the face of war? Or is there a third solution—one where everything hinges on the bravery and daring of a Cornish debutante and the Emperor’s aeronaut? The Emperor’s Aeronaut is the first novel in the Regent’s Devices trilogy set in the Magnificent Devices steampunk world. It promises no strong language, the possibility of a very proper kiss, and a guaranteed happy ending of the trilogy. If you like books by Regina Scott, Gail Carriger, or Emma Jane Holloway, you’re in the right place. Enjoy! "Adina and Scott launch their Regent’s Devices series with a witty and whimsical flight of fancy in a subgenre they call Prinnypunk (Regency-era steampunk); it plays out as a delightfully fun mash-up of Jane Austen and Jules Verne, right down to the hint of sweet romance and the array of ingenious inventions.” —Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saucy Yvette de Maupassant is used to danger. She's spent the last 10 years spying for England in Napoleon's court. Now that her work has been discovered, she must hide, and what better place than the remote wooded estate of the Earl of Carrolton? Her friend Miss Thorn and that delightful cat Fortune place her in a position where she can pretend to be companion to the earl's sickly mother. Yet one look at the earl has Yvette rethinking why she wants to stay. Gregory, Earl of Carrolton, is used to power. So why does one moment in the company of his mother and spinster sister leave him feeling powerless? And why does the look in a certain Frenchwoman's eyes leave him weak at the knees? As danger draws closer, Gregory and Yvette must work together to protect her, his family, and the future of England, as they discover the greatest danger and delight is falling in love. This sweet, clean Regency romance is the sequel to Never Borrow a Baronet. Fortune's Brides: Only a matchmaking cat can hunt true love. Here's a taste: Men. They must have been discussing what to do about her situation, yet they all stared at her as if she'd floated down from the ceiling dressed in chicken feathers. Mr. Villers's mouth even hung open. "Vite, vite," Yvette said, coming to join them. "You must be quick. Meredith is with her ladyship, but I will be wanted shortly." Mr. Mayes brightened. She'd met the solicitor last month at Foulness Manor, the home of her friend Harry. Of course he would want news of Meredith-unless Yvette missed her guess, he intended to court the lady. "Miss Thorn is still here?" he asked. "For the time being," the earl told him. Then he stepped forward to take Yvette's hand in his. Such a large hand. Hers disappeared inside it, yet she felt perfectly comfortable. "Miss de Maupassant," he said, "Mr. Mayes and Mr. Villers came to let us know they have identified the man pursuing you. You must be brave. It is your cousin." The room dimmed. She must have swayed on her feet, for his hand slipped around her waist as if to hold her upright. She clung to his hand, to his warmth. She could not let her fear rule her. "I should have known Claude would be involved," she made herself say. "I am only surprised he crossed the Channel himself. Where is he now?" "We're not sure," Mr. Mayes admitted. "One of our best men, Lord Trevithan, nearly caught him in London, but he managed to escape." He would, even from the dashing Lord Trevithan, who'd recruited her for a spy. Her cousin was a survivor. So many wrongs could be laid at his door, yet he always escaped capture, like a cockroach scuttling away from the light. "You're safe here," the earl said in his deep voice, hand still holding hers. "He has no idea where you are." Yvette shook her head. "He had no idea where I was. Why do you think he allowed you to see him in London? He wanted you to know he was in England. You hurried to tell me, and he will hurry to follow you." Mr. Villers straightened, and Mr. Mayes' handsome face tightened. "You're right," the solicitor said. "We were fools. Carrolton, there's nothing for it now. We'll have to find another place for Miss de Maupassant." The earl stiffened, but once more the room seemed to darken. Leave Carrolton Park? She had only been here a few days, but she felt as if ribbons bound her to the place. Why? She owed them only her thanks. But who would answer Lady Carrolton's bell? Who would depress Lady Lilith's notions? Who would smile encouragement to a beleaguered earl over dinner, share secrets and plans in the corridors? He still had not released her hand, was gazing down at her, face troubled. Did he fear the danger she had brought to his beautiful home? Or was he also troubled that she might leave?

He wrote on philosophy, ontology, poetry, plays, journalism, public lectures and debates, literary and art criticism, biography, Christian apologetics, and fiction, including fantasy and detective fiction. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox". Whenever possible, Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, and allegories—first carefully turning them inside out. Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both progressivism and conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify such a position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius". Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sir Gibbie"- The novel follows Sir Gibbie on his adventures through the moors of Scotland's Highlands. Having no mother and an alcoholic father, Gibbie must survive on the streets as a child unable to read or speak. It is notable for its Doric dialogue, but has been criticized, especially by members of the Scottish Renaissance, for being part of the kailyard movement. Despite this, there are far more who claim the book paints a fair view of urban as well as rural life. The book doesn't seem to dwell as long on physical geography as it does on the spiritual geography of the soul. "Donal Grant" is the sequel to Sir Gibbie and it follows the steps of Gibbie's friend Donald as he tries to find a place for himself in the world. He manages to become a tutor to the son of an Earl. During his service he solves the mystery of the castle's lost room and, in the meanwhile, gets the interest of the earl's niece, who finds himself a special kind of person. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle. G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence". MacDonald has been credited with founding the "kailyard school" of Scottish writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his life, Gilbert Chesterton always had a propensity for throwing his genius around. As a result of this tendency, Chesterton penned articles, essays, stories, and poems for so many periodicals that it was almost impossible to keep track of them. In this volume, Dr. Denis J. Conlon, Professor of English Literature at the University of Antwerp, has compiled Chesterton's short stories--some of which have never appeared in print. Many stories will be new to Chesterton fans because they were originally published in England and never appeared in U.S. editions, and others published in the U.S. remain unknown on the other side of the Atlantic. Dr. Conlon also includes the lost Father Brown stories, "Fr. Brown and the Donnington Affair" and "The Mask of Midas". There are 43 short stories here, along with a selection of 25 complete and incomplete tales from Chesterton's notebooks, and numerous drawings and illustrations. Some of the stories in this wonderful volume are: "The Coloured Lands," "The Sword of Wood," "The Trees of Pride," "How I Found the Superman," "The Five of Swords," "Homesick at Home," and "The End of Wisdom." With illustrations.

Book excerpt: George MacDonald's 'Sir Gibbie & Donal Grant: The Baronet's Song and The Shepherd's Castle' is a captivating adventure classic that follows the intertwined tales of Sir Gibbie, a kind-hearted and heroic young man, and Donal Grant, a reformed criminal seeking redemption. MacDonald's literary style is characterized by vivid descriptions, moral allegory, and elements of fantasy, making this book a compelling and thought-provoking read. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century Scotland, the story explores themes of courage, sacrifice, and the transformative power of compassion.
