Book Synopsis Modern Aspects of Colloidal Dispersions by : Ronald H. Ottewill
Download or read book Modern Aspects of Colloidal Dispersions written by Ronald H. Ottewill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the papers presented at a meeting sponsored by the Colloid and Interface Science Group of the Faraday Division, Royal Society of Chemistry, which was held at Wills Hall, University of Bristol from the 14th - 16th April 1997. The pur pose of the meeting, which was entitled Colloidal Dispersions, was to discuss the subject of concentrated colloidal systems including, dispersions, emulsions and powders, in order to emphasize recent advances in experimental and theoretical understanding of these systems and how these advances could be applied to practical utitisation in the wide range of industries which are involved with colloidal systems. The papers presented at the meeting were given by the principal participants in a 5 year project on Colloid Technology, which started on the 1st August 1992, and was funded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) of the U.K. and a consortium of industries which was composed of ICI, Schlumberger, Unilever and Zeneca. The academic centres involved were, the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Imperial College, London. Each of the papers published in this volume formed the focus for a discussion on that topic so that each subject was discussed in so me depth by the participants. J ean Proctor and Meg Staff have been tremendously helpful as secretaries at Bristol and Cambridge respectively throughout the project. Also, their help with the various meetings and with the production of this volume was invaluable. We thank them most warmly for their very able assistance.

Book excerpt: This volume details the thermodynamics and kinetics of the adsorption of surfactants and polymers on solids, as well as coagulation and flocculation mechanisms - demonstrating the applicability of the newest theoretical approaches on practical systems.;Written by over 15 international experts in the field, Coagulation and Flocculation: treats the Gouy-Chapman theory of an isolated planar charged surface and the DLVO theory describing the interaction between two identical charged surfaces; shows which energies are responsible for structure formation, what types of structure can be built in diluted and concentrated systems and how such structures can be studied and characterized; describes the interplay between interface and hydrodynamic forces and derives equations for calculating their individual probabilities; examines the use of microscopy, photography, individual particle sensors, sedimentation and light scattering to measure aggregate size distributions; and discusses methods for forming ceramics and the effects of improvements in powder packing and the stabilization of powder suspensions on processing steps.
Book Synopsis Structures and Dynamics of Asphaltenes by : Oliver C. Mullins
Download or read book Structures and Dynamics of Asphaltenes written by Oliver C. Mullins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigative assault upon the enigmatic asphaltenes has recently resulted in sig nificant advances in many varied disciplines. Taken individually, each discipline exposes certain facets of asphaltenes, but each, alone, can never reveal asphaltenes from all van tages. Even seemingly narrowly focused issues such as the molecular structures of asphal tenes, or the colloidal structures of asphaltenes require a confluence of many lines of investigation to yield an understanding which differs from truth by diminishing uncer tainty. An holistic treatment of the asphaltenes is a powerful approach to evolve further their understanding. For example, examination of asphaltenes at the highest resolution yields molecular structure. A slight increase in scale probes asphaltene colloidal structure. Weaving together asphaltene studies performed at different length scales results in a fabric which envelops an encompassing vision of asphaltenes. At the same time, the interfaces of these hierarchical studies provide additional constraints on imagination, more than investi gations at individual length scales alone. These considerations shaped the timing, format, and the content of our book. The editors are very appreciative of the diligence and hard work manifest in each of the contributed chapters herein. We thank the contributing authors for making this project a success. Oliver C. Mullins Eric Y. Sheu vii CONTENTS I. Asphaltenes: Types and Sources ...................................... .

This book was released on 2021-08-29 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents high-quality research in the field of 3D imaging technology. The second edition of International Conference on 3D Imaging Technology (3DDIT-MSP&DL) continues the good traditions already established by the first 3DIT conference (IC3DIT2019) to provide a wide scientific forum for researchers, academia and practitioners to exchange newest ideas and recent achievements in all aspects of image processing and analysis, together with their contemporary applications. The conference proceedings are published in 2 volumes. The main topics of the papers comprise famous trends as: 3D image representation, 3D image technology, 3D images and graphics, and computing and 3D information technology. In these proceedings, special attention is paid at the 3D tensor image representation, the 3D content generation technologies, big data analysis, and also deep learning, artificial intelligence, the 3D image analysis and video understanding, the 3D virtual and augmented reality, and many related areas. The first volume contains papers in 3D image processing, transforms and technologies. The second volume is about computing and information technologies, computer images and graphics and related applications. The two volumes of the book cover a wide area of the aspects of the contemporary multidimensional imaging and the related future trends from data acquisition to real-world applications based on various techniques and theoretical approaches.
Book Synopsis Surface and Colloid Science by : Egon Matijevic
Download or read book Surface and Colloid Science written by Egon Matijevic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the first volume appeared in 1969, this series has received good reviews in a variety of periodicals published in different corners of the world. It would seem that the work has fulfilled its purpose as outlined in the Preface to Volume 1. The rapidly increasing interest in surface and colloid science by people engaged in industrial research and development, and in environmental, ecological, medical, pharmaceutical, and other areas, justifies the continuation of such an effort. The Surface and Colloid Science series originated with John Wiley and Sons and has been continued with Plenum Press. This volume is the third with the present publisher, and is the best assurance of our mutual interest to proceed with this work. Some books in the series, as was the case with Volume 11, may appear under the editorship of other workers in the field. For reasons of continuity, a sequential numbering system will be maintained. This editor hopes to provide the scientific and technical community with high-quality contributions in surface and colloid science in the future. He invites specialists to submit definitive chapters on any topic within the broad area of our discipline for inclusion in this series.

Book excerpt: With joy and pride parents observe the coming of age of their children, confer. , ence conveners the acceptance of their programmes, and editors the demand for their volumes. The scientific advisory board of the Gothenburg . . Symposia, the Springer publishing house of the proceedings and the editors are more than pleased with the fact that the demand for these books far exceeds the supply. The themes vocalized by the Gothenburg Symposia reHect research and development needs for the environment more than envisioned at the concep tion of the conferences. An environment-oriented analysis of the situation, not confined to the European community, furnishes the following results: (1) Due to the very high population density in many areas environmental quality is endangered; this has become apparent at the very moment in particular in the aqueous habitat and is corroborated by corresponding regulation proposals from the European Council. (2) Pollution control concepts and measures are developed to a varying degree in many countries of the world, reHecting in most instances the need for environmental protection and the closely related devel opment of (judicial and technical) measures. In most instances these controlling and protective measures need to be intensified. (3) Thus, nearly all countries face the problem of developing and/or improving pollution control strategies, i. e. building new treatment plants, upgrading overloaded or outdated instal lations and designing new operating and controlling strategies for improved plant performance.
