Book excerpt: The threshold neutron-foil spectrometry method, utilizing the SAND II spectrum unfolding code, was evaluated by carrying out a measurement in the standard fission source facility, simultaneous with six (6) in-phantom measurements of neutron spectra. The foil spectrometry was done with the full set of threshold foils, mid-thorax in ER1, where a 2 in. lead wall separated reactor and phantom. A five-foil set was utilized for the phantom mid-head and phantom hip measurements in ER1, as well as for mid-thorax, mid-head and hip in ER2, free field. Calculations of the mid-thorax and mid-head spectra in ER1 and ER2 were carried out, with the source term normalized to nickel foil activations at the reactor entrance window. A simple 5-foil perturbation method for neutron dosimetry, utilizing hand calculations, was developed and evaluated for the ER1 and ER2 spectra. It appears to be the order of 6 percent accurate versus 3-4 percent for SAND II, which utilizes the best (calculated) a prior data available for spectral shape information. Book excerpt: The qualitative aspects of the activation technique of neutron flux spectral determination are well known. The quantitative aspects are not so well known. In part, the failure of correlation and subsequent understanding of neutron radiation effect studies is attributed to a lack of adequate knowledge about the form of neutron environments. An Advanced Activation Method of Neutron Flux Spectral Determination based on the use of updated and more accurate cross section data and activation measurements is presented. This method will permit the definition of neutron flux spectral forms with increased accuracy for radiation effect studies. The results of error analysis studies on methods of foil activity data reduction and requirements on the accuracy of activation detector cross section data and activity measurements are presented and discussed. The appendixes of this volume contain tabulated data that are necessary for the performance of Step I of the advanced method of foil activation data reduction. Volume II of this report presents and discusses the updated evaluated cross section data. Volume III discusses the computer code required for the performance of Step II of the advanced method. Volume IV presents the results of Tory II-C flux spectral measurements using the advanced method of data reduction. (Author).

Book excerpt: Since Locher first suggested Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) in 1936, this theoretically ideal system has intrigued investigators. Unfortunately, the first clinical trials between 1951-1961 were not successful. However, they served to implant firmly the seed of BNCT, the growth of which has been carefully nurtured at a number of locations world-wide. This fact is attested to by the ongoing clinical trials in Japan as well as by the presence of researchers from active groups in the ten countries represented at this Workshop. In 1983 and 1985, the first and second international biannual symposia on BNCT were held, in response to a resurgence of interest in this field. In 1986, the DOE sponsored a workshop on NCT, in large part directed toward evaluating the national effort and the various neutron sources available within the United States. It now seems likely, because of various factors including improved neutron beams and boron delivery systems which have made the modality more attractive, that clinical trials will be initiated in the United States within the next few years. This 1988 special workshop, interspersed between the biannual international symposia, represents an effort to seek ideas and advice on the clinical a~pects of BNCT, from all those diverse groups with a national commitment to this project. Our purpose is to facilitate our endeavor to incorporate the best procedures and techniques in the upcoming clinical trials.
