Book Synopsis Neutron Diffraction Studies of Some Rare Earth-Transition Metal Deuterides by : William J. James

This book was released on 1986 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron diffraction experiments were performed on Ho6Mn23. At 77K it is found to have a face-centered cubic crystal structure and a non-collinear magnetic structure, with the Ho moments tilted at an angle of 33.4 to the Mn moments. The Ho atom carries a moment of 3.8 mu sub B, while the Mn moments at the b, d, f sub 1 and f sub 2 sites are 2.1, 2.0, 2.2 and 1.9 mu sub B respectively, comparable to those found in Y6Mn23. The very low moment on the Ho atom is rationalized as resulting from the fanning of the weakly coupled rare earth moments around the net Ho moment direction, giving a low spatially averaged value. Neutron diffraction studies of three Y6(Fe1-xAlx)23 compounds (x=0.05, 0.10, 0.15) at 523K and 77K reveal substantial preferential atomic ordering of Fe and Al atoms on the four transition crystallographic sites. The Fe atoms exhibit different magnetic moments on the four sites. The ternary alloys, Y6(FexMn1-x)23, exhibit interesting magnetic behavior over a range of solid solutions of iron and manganese. The effects of the substitution of Fe by Al in the R2 (Fe1-xAlx)14B compounds (R = Y, rare earths) on their magnetic properties have been investigated. The present experimental data indicate that intermetallic compounds based on Nd2(Fe1-x-yAlxCoy)14B have both high Curie temperatures and high coercive fields. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy of (Nd1-xSmx)2Fe14B and (Nd1-xPrx)2Fe14B has been studied by X-ray and magnetic measurements. Keywords: Rare earth-transition metal alloys and hydrides; Permanent magnets; Sublattices.

This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations of H3Ta(C5H5)2 (III), HW2(CO)9(NO) (IV), and HW2(CO)(NO) (P(OCH3)3) (V) have been completed. Preliminary results are available for HFeCo3(CO)9(P(OCH3)3)3 (VII). This work, together with studies of HMo2(C5H5)2(CO)4(P(CH3)2) (VI) and ((C2H5)4N) (HCr2(CO)10)− carried out at Argonne has led to some general observations on the geometry and the nature of bonding in these compounds. For example, in the structures of IV and V, both of which have bent W--H--W linkages (less than W--H--W in the range 125-130°), there is conclusive evidence for the existence of a closed three-center W--H--W bond with significant metal-metal interaction. Such is the case, because extensions of the axial W--C and W--N bonds trans to the hydride intersect at a point near the center of the W--H--W triangle. The geometry of VI, which also contains a bent M--H--M bond, is consistent with that of IV and V. Bridging M--H bonds in these second- and third-row hydrides range in length from 1.85 to 1.89 A, compared to 1.75 A in the first-row polynuclear complex VII. For metals of corresponding rows, bridging M--H bonds are about 0.1 A longer than terminal bonds, which are classified as single covalent bonds.
Book Synopsis Neutron Diffraction Studies of Tetrahedral Cluster Transition Metal Hydride Complexes by :
Download or read book Neutron Diffraction Studies of Tetrahedral Cluster Transition Metal Hydride Complexes written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structures of the tetrahedral cluster transition metal hydride complexes HFeCo/sub 3/(CO)/sub 9/(P(OCH/sub 3/)/sub 3/)/sub 3/ and H/sub 3/Ni/sub 4/(C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)/sub 4/ have been investigated by low-temperature neutron diffraction techniques. Both complexes have approximate C/sub 3//sub v/ symmetry. In HFeCo/sub 3/(CO)/sub 9/(P(OMe)/sub 3/)/sub 3/ the hydride ligand is found outside the FeCo/sub 3/ cluster, 0.978(3) A from the Co/sub 3/ face, and essentially on the molecular three-fold axis, triply bridging the cobalt atoms. Mean distances in the cluster are Co-Co 2.489(7), Co-Fe 2.559(2), Co-H 1.734(4) A. In H/sub 3/Ni/sub 4/(Cp)/sub 4/ the three hydride ligands are face-bridging, and their mean displacement from the faces of the cluster is 0.90(3) A. The H/sub 3/Ni/sub 4/ core may be envisaged as a distorted cube, with one vertex unoccupied. Mean distances are Ni-Ni 2.469(6), Ni-H 1.691(8), H ... H 2.316(6) A. The observed geometries of the two clusters considered here suggest a plausible model for chemisorption of hydrogen on (111) faces of cubic and (001) faces of hexagonal close-packed metals, in which hydrogen atoms are located approximately 1 A above the centers of triangles of metal atoms.

Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.
