Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inter action between the magnetic field generated by the neutron and the magnetic moment of atoms containing unpaired electrons was experimentally demonstrated for the first time about twenty years ago. The basic theory describing such an in teraction had already been developed and the first nuclear reactors with large available thermal neutron fluxes had recently been con structed. The power of the magnetic neutron interaction for in vestigating the structure of magnetic materials was immediately recognized and put to use where possible. Neutron diffraction, however, was practicable only in countries with nuclear reactors. The earliest neutron determinations of magnetic ordering were hence primarily carried out at Oak Ridge and Brookhaven in the US, at Chalk River in Canada and at Harwell in England. Diffraction patterns from polycrystalline ferromagnets and antiferromagnets are interpretable if produced by simple spin arrays. More complex magnetic scattering patterns could often be unravelled, in terms of a three-dimensional array of atomic moments, if the specimen studied is a single crystal. The devel opment of sophisticated cryogenic equipment, with independently alignable magnetic fields, opened the way to greater complexity in the magnetic structures that could be successfully determined, as did also the introduction of polarized neutron beams. By the end of the 'sixties, many countries were contributing significantly to neutron diffraction studies of a wide variety of magnetic materials.

By magnetic structures we refer to the mutual alignment of the magnetic moments of the atoms in a crystal and their overall alignment relative to the crystallographic axes. Some indirect, tentative data on the magnetic structure of magnetic materials can be obtained from research on their magnetic, mechanical, thermal, and other properties. But only neutron diffraction is a unique direct method of detennining the magnetic structure of a crystal. The magnetic structure of more than one thousand crystals with magnetic order has been studied during 30 years of neutron diffraction research made on reactors in a large number of laboratories in the world. The results of this research work are extensively described in the handbook Magnetic Structures Determined by Neutron Diffraction [176]; in the present book, we will often refer to this handbook. The first extensive theoretical generalization of the principles of magnetic neutron diffraction and the results of research on magnetic structures appeared in the book by Yu. A. Izyumov and R. P. Ozerov Magnetic Neutron Diffraction [24, 134].

Book excerpt: Now neutron diffraction is widely applied for the research of crystal, magnetic structure and internal stress of crystalline materials of various classes, including nanocrystalls. In the present book, we make practically short excursion to modern state of neutron diffraction researches of crystal materials of various classes. The book contains a helpful information on a modern state of neutron diffraction researches of crystals for the broad specialists interested in studying crystals and purposeful regulation of their service characteristics, since the crystal structure, basically, defines their physical and mechanical properties. Some chapters of the book have methodical character that can be useful to scientists, interested in possibilities of neutron diffraction. We hope, that results of last years presented in the book, can be a push to new ideas in studying of crystalline, magnetic structure and a macrostructure of usual crystal materials and nanocrystals. In turn, it can promote working out of new materials with new improved service characteristics and to origin of innovative ideas.

Book excerpt: This book describes the process of application of neutron diffraction, which involves determining the atomic/magnetic structure of a material using neutron scattering. The technique of neutron diffraction has found extensive applications in the study of crystals, magnetic composition and inner stress of crystalline materials of diverse categories, including nanocrystals. This book contains important data on the current status of neutron diffraction studies of crystals for experts keen on researching crystals and monitored control of their service traits, because their physical and mechanical properties are largely results of their crystal structure. Topics covered in this book have been dealt with meticulously and this book will be important to scientists keen on exploring the possibilities of this process. This text will further assist the studies of crystalline, magnetic & macrostructures of usual crystal materials and nanocrystals to achieve a new benchmark and propagate the creation of new resources with enhanced service traits and development of pioneering ideas.

At 77K it is found to have a face-centered cubic crystal structure and a non-collinear magnetic structure, with the Ho moments tilted at an angle of 33.4 to the Mn moments. The Ho atom carries a moment of 3.8 mu sub B, while the Mn moments at the b, d, f sub 1 and f sub 2 sites are 2.1, 2.0, 2.2 and 1.9 mu sub B respectively, comparable to those found in Y6Mn23. The very low moment on the Ho atom is rationalized as resulting from the fanning of the weakly coupled rare earth moments around the net Ho moment direction, giving a low spatially averaged value. Neutron diffraction studies of three Y6(Fe1-xAlx)23 compounds (x=0.05, 0.10, 0.15) at 523K and 77K reveal substantial preferential atomic ordering of Fe and Al atoms on the four transition crystallographic sites. The Fe atoms exhibit different magnetic moments on the four sites. The ternary alloys, Y6(FexMn1-x)23, exhibit interesting magnetic behavior over a range of solid solutions of iron and manganese. The effects of the substitution of Fe by Al in the R2 (Fe1-xAlx)14B compounds (R = Y, rare earths) on their magnetic properties have been investigated. The present experimental data indicate that intermetallic compounds based on Nd2(Fe1-x-yAlxCoy)14B have both high Curie temperatures and high coercive fields. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy of (Nd1-xSmx)2Fe14B and (Nd1-xPrx)2Fe14B has been studied by X-ray and magnetic measurements. Keywords: Rare earth-transition metal alloys and hydrides; Permanent magnets; Sublattices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book covering the theory, practicalities, and the extensive applications of neutron powder diffraction in materials science, physics, chemistry, mineralogy and engineering. Various highlight applications of neutron powder diffraction are outlined in the introduction, then the theory is developed and instrumentation described sufficient for a return to the applications. The book covers the use of neutron powder diffraction in the solution (hard) and refinement (more straightforward) of crystal and magnetic structures, applications of powder diffraction in quantitative phase analysis, extraction of microstructural information from powder diffraction patterns, and the applications of neutron diffraction in studies of elastic properties and for the measurement of residual stress. Additional theory to underpin these various applications is developed as required. Much of the material should be accessible to senior undergraduates in science and engineering, as well as to graduate students and more senior researchers with an interest in the technique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnetic properties of the layered compounds of the form RMn2X2 (R = Rare Earth, X = Si, Ge) have been thought to be sensitive to the intralayer Mn-Mn distance. Thus it has been reported that the Mn moments in CeMn2Si2 are aligned antiferromagnetically (AF) below T{sub N} = 380K, while the Mn moments in CeMn2Ge2 are ferromagnetic (FM) below T{sub C} = 316K. Recently, however, there has been some debate about the actual magnetic structures of this family of compounds, and for this reason the authors have performed high-resolution neutron powder diffraction measurements on these compounds for temperatures between 12K and 550K. The measurements indicate that at high temperatures both compounds are paramagnetic. Below T{sub N} = 380K CeMn2Si2 becomes a collinear AF, with a structure similar to that reported by Siek et al. in which the magnetic propagation vector is [tau] = (0 0 1). CeMn2Ge2 on the other hand, exhibits two different magnetic transitions. At T{sub N} ≈ 415K there is a transition to a collinear AF phase characterized by the commensurate propagation wavevector [tau] = (1 0 1). At T{sub C} = 318K there is a transition to a conical structure with a ferromagnetic component along the c-axis and a helical component in the ab plane. The helical component is characterized by the incommensurate propagation vector [tau] = (1 0 1-q{sub z}), where q{sub z} is temperature dependent. These findings are consistent with the recent results of Welter et al.
